Previous interglacials follow the same basic structure – a huge spike at the start, followed by a slow bouncing up and down of temperature that lasts about ten thousand years before the temperature plunges and the wall of ice returns. The Minoan and Roman warmings were widely thought to be 2-5 degrees warmer than the average temperature today. Our interglacial has been longer than most. The ice will return, but we don’t know when.
The spike at the start of our interglacial caused the global sea levels to change approximately 140 meters in height as all of the land-based ice covering Canada, some of the US, Europe, Russian, and other parts of Asia all melted.
The natural variation in temperature over a thousand years can be as high as 10 degrees Celsius. The natural rate of sea level rise can also be as high as 150 meters over 1000 years. The catastrophic worst-case scenarios of the rabid warmists have all come true… around 16,000 years ago. They are also entirely within the natural range or fluctuations. We don’t know why there’s an interglacial about every 100 – 120 thousand years. That’s the real question in climate, but it’s so long ranged that very few want to look at it, and it’s not an immediate, tangible threat so it doesn’t receive the big research dollars dollars that “we’re all gonna die!” can bring in.
CO2 solubility in water decreases as temperature increases – as the temperature goes up, more of the CO2 previously dissolved in the oceans will be freed to the atmosphere from surface waters. This is one of the reasons that CO2 lags temperature: we don’t know how long a full cycle from the abysmals to the surface and back down takes, but there’s more CO2 dissolved in the oceans than in the atmosphere right now.
Any short-term uptick in CO2 caused by us should be short-lived. Plants spend most of their time starved for CO2. That’s one of the three tricks used in commercial greenhouses – the first trick is to close the doors so that heat can’t rise and escape (CO2 can’t do that), the second is to use wall and roof materials that are near invisible to incoming light, but block some outgoing lightwaves (CO2 does that a bit, but that spectrum is pretty much saturated at current levels) and finally, greenhouses use higher CO2 levels to spur plant growth with less water and fertilizer required (using two to three times the normal atmospheric level of CO2).
I could continue, but it’s time to go to work. Those fossil fuels that keep Canada livable don’t always find their own way out of the ground, you know.
