The apparent anti-Muslim assault on a New York city cabbie by a man shouting “Assalamu Alaikum. Consider this a checkpoint” produced an immediate round of recriminations over its connection to opposition to a New York Islamic Center and an apparent rising tide of Islamophobia.
But as often at the intersection of politics and violent crime, the story doesn’t appear to fit any easy stereotype: The alleged assailant, Michael Enright, is — according to his Facebook profile and the website of the left-leaning media organization Intersections International — a student at the School of Visual Arts and a volunteer for Intersections, which recently produced a statement of support for the Park51 project and is funded by the mainstream, liberal Collegiate Church of New York.

Didn’t the Islamists declare that all their attacks against the West were ‘because of the way the West has attacked them’? So, they justified their actions by blaming the West as causal [ignoring the textual exhortation in their Qur’an that all infidels must be killed.]
Well, when the West attacks them – isn’t this justified because THEY have attacked the West? After all, it’s exactly the same logic, the same causality. You did violence to us; we do violence to you….and which came first, as the chicken said to the egg.
Back to the Obamamosque. If its builders really wanted to show that Islam is tolerant of others, then, it would acknowledge that 70% of Americans don’t want it built there, and would both build it further away AND open it to non-Muslims for debates and discussion. Since they refuse to do this and instead attack those who do not want it there as ‘bigots, phobics’..then, they are not tolerant of any and have an Islamist militant agenda.

As for Knight 99’s poignant question about why the Left isn’t concerned about what Islam will do to them if/when Islam gains power in North America, I think the explanation is two-fold:
1. The Leftist mind constant exhibits what Thomas Sowell calls “First Stage Thinking”. They just react immediately & emotionally to the immediate data at hand but never think through what further consequences their immediate “solution” will cause. A prime example is giving money to a drug addict who is begging on the street. The Leftist is convinced this is the correct and righteous thing to do. Yet they never stop for a moment to think that giving this person money will almost certainly enable their addiction into the future, causing them further harm.
2. “My enemy’s enemy is my friend.” – This is an ancient proverb that is still true today. Make no mistake, Leftists believe that conservatives are MUCH more their enemy than Radical Islamists are. I realize that’s a difficult thing to wrap your mind around but we have countless proof of it every month.

Cole has a serious point. So far the Islam-watchers have included very few working politicians with real responsibility. The Americans have shown remarkable restraint and remarkable tolerance towards their fellow American Muslims since 9/11, evidence of the great nation the U.S. is. American fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq has had some tragic collateral damage, but the people blowing up bombs to purposely kill innocent civilians in those two countries have been Muslim (Taliban and AlQaida).

Apparently this film student had been over in Afghanistan with U.S. forces, filming some of the action in Helmand province for about a month — I suppose it’s fair to say from the context that he arrived there a leftie, but perhaps he saw things that changed his belief structure or just blew it away entirely. Not that there’s any excuse for pulling a knife on a cabbie, but some people are just mentally unbalanced whatever their politics.
The kid is from Brewster? I used to live near there, went to the Brewster Theater quite often. The cinema, you know.
Brewster is a fairly depressed town, or was when I left there in the late 90’s. About the only thing of note in the whole town other than the movies is the Metro-North railroad station. Jump on the train and go right to Manhattan. Eventually. Its a long ride.
