Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Should have been a full pardon.
Hey Dubya! What about Conrad?
Good deal!! Glad that those guys are out. It was only a matter of time until somebody offed them in prison.
“Hey Dubya! What about Conrad?”
If Clinton pardoned the crook Rich, surely Black should be pardoned as well.
A decent President does the right thing.
Remember it.
Rush was talking about this and mentioned that Bill Ayers was just refused entry to Canada.
I’m happy that Conrad will stay in prison.
Thank you Dubya!!! That was one of the worst cases of injustice that I have ever seen.
As for Conrad, could you extend his sentence another 10 years please!!
Good on our government for not allowing that snot rag Ayerst into our country. I can just see Jack Layton wanting to give this guy the keys to the city if he was still on TO council.
Two nice stories in a row – R&C and Ayers, the trifecta would be Conrad Black being pardoned as well. It is an injustice that he is incarcerated
Will they get back pay, and be reinstated into their jobs.
Unfortunately this was done far too late for the word “decent” to have any possible meaning.
Mary T. Says: ” Will they get back pay, and be reinstated into their jobs.”
Unfortunately Mary, the answer is no. They had their sentences commuted, not pardoned and commutation only affects the sentence handed out.
They are therefore still convicted felons and since they were both fired from their jobs upon conviction and the loss of their appeal, it is unlikely that they will get their jobs back.
The good news is. Why would they want to go back to work for an outfit that hung them out to dry for doing their jobs and shooting a dirtbag?
I hate to say it because I am a big fan of Dubya’s but the prosecutor on this case is a very good friend of his and I really don’t think he wanted to embarrass his old friend by granting a pardon.
IMHO anyway.
Cheers
Tom
Remarkable that Black is going to be shunned in this.
Bush knows from experience that Patrick Fitzgerald is an attack dog looking for scalps who abuses the authority of his office to do so (see Scooter Libby).
That Black was convicted was a travesty of justice. It is an equal travesty that Mr. Bush is going to allow it to stand.
“Hey Dubya! What about Conrad?” I am asking that too, Joe and Ward.
Well done GWB
Too little…too late.
Although it can rightly be argued at least they got something…nothing but a full pardon was deserved.
To hell with Conrad , what about scooter?
Bush commutes the wrongly convicted but they still remain categorized as felons, will have a hard time finding work.
Obama will be giving full pardon the gitmo boys and they are still categorized terrorists with wide open options for their line of work.
Yep, that’s change alright…
And I hope fired the prosecutor and judge in this matter. Oh wait. All I have to do is try to sneak across the border with a joint, and get punched out.Think of the lawsuit!!!
Thank you President Bush. This was not just a victory for Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.
Its long overdue Justice. This was a political conviction engineered by democrats to de-normalize border patrols. Nothing like putting two of your own in Jail to chill anyone from doing there job.
It is a good thing indeed.
They never should have seen any prison time AT ALL. They should never have been charged, for that matter.
For all those thinking these guys got screwed over, a couple of points:
– they didn’t know the dude was a drug dealer when they shot him in the back
– they tried to cover up the shooting
Ramos and Compean are VERY lucky to have their sentence commuted.
Libby and Black, two guys who actually deserve to be pardoned, got nada.
Bush has already commuted Libbys sentence, which means Mr. Libby did not see any jail time, but was required to pay the 250,000 fine, and will have a record.
While I know Mr. Black would like to have his name completely exhonorated, I would think he would have been accepting of a commutation, rather than a full pardon.
With 5000 applications for pardons submitted to Bush, all likely vetted down to a few by staff before Bush sees them, I wonder if he even knows Conrad Blacks name?
Well done Mr. President
That was mighty white of Bush!
i fully agree with President Bush’s decision not to pardon Conrad Black. the crook did the crime and now he has to do the time. karma be praised.
damn right it should have been a full pardon. the prosecutor should be in jail.
Revnant Dream, sorry, but the whole democrat tinfoil hat theory does not wash with this one. The prosecutor was a Bush appointment.
That they were charged in the first place was a disgrace, that they were actually convicted was a travesty and that the sentences were only commuted instead of full pardons should make GWB hang his head in shame.
All I can say is, Thank God, for Presidential Term Limits, we need to extend that to all Political Positions.
