Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Hey, I get kidney stones and I’m only 25. That MUST be PROOF of global warming!!!!!!!1!1!1!11one
😮
While kidney stones are no laughing matter when you’re passing one (ooouch!), this really is hilarious.
If there’s even a slim chance I’ll get another kidney stone, I’m jumping on the AGW wagon. The pain of passing a stone is frightening. It’s very close to a broken bone or even a dislocated shoulder. If you really want to scare people, this is the ticket.
On the other hand, if it gets warmer I’ll drink more water. It’s a fairly simple solution.
Dat’s nuthin!
I had a heart attack in Jan that I am sure I can lay at the feet of AGW somehow. After all, it happened coming out of the gym, where I expelled much more CO2 than is the norm for me.
What do ya think? MSM worthy? I am sure the Sun family of papers would print it as a letter to the editor. Hey, it’s a start!
Kate…here we were defending you and now you get all silly on us!
Now QE is going to ask you for da proof!!
You are on your own kiddo!!
QE;no,climate change denyers are NOT like the other side.Thats like saying that you are going to HELL because some preacher says that you are!You dont believe in Jesus so you are doomed to HELL for eternity! Jews are doomed because some flake says they are.Make no mistake about it,the climate change believers are FLAKES! If they really meant what they say they mean,China,India and most of the third world would be shut down TOMORROW!The polution in those countries is unbelievable.Talk to someone whose been there.
My very own SDA dedication. I’m honored!
A proposition for SDA readers:
Let us assume, as many here do, that the AGW thesis is utterly fallacious, and that human influences on climate change are insignificant at best. Let us assume further, as many here also do, that global average temperatures are indeed rising, but that the cause of this is driven entirely by natural (i.e., non-man-made) phenomena.
Are the kidney stone research findings incompatible with these assumptions? I would venture, no. Rising average temperatures—whatever their cause(s)—can indeed lead to higher risk of dehydration, particularly in parts of the world already prone to drought. I see nowhere in the linked press releases that claims that these rising temps are human-induced, only that such increases may result in harms to human populations.
What, then, might Kate’s intention be in (falsely) characterizing this research as yet more ‘Y2Kyoto’ hysteria? My hypothesis is that, lacking the ability to access, understand, and critique the scientific literature on its own merits, she is resorting to setting up and tearing down strawmen to keep her less critical readers happy.
But don’t take my word for it. By all means, read the Science Daily article, consider the smug sarcasm dripping from Kate’s post, and judge for yourselves.
Again, QE, you don’t quite get the point. One of the criticisms of AGW on this blog is that it’s become faintly ludicrous in its presumptions.
I did read that story and it claims that the cost of treating kidney stones IF the globe warms and IF people don’t hydrate themselves may rise 10-20% to $1 billion by the year 2050.
What do you think $1 billion will be worth 42 years from now? Do you think hydration will be a problem after 42 more years of technological advances?
It’s a ridiculous story but wrap it up in global warming and people wring their hands in worry and treat it like another sign of the Apocalypse.
Are the kidney stone research findings incompatible with these assumptions?
I would venture NO! Increased temperature may increase drought or it may increase rainfall. After all warm air holds more water than cold air. Speculation as to which one will be the result is just that speculation. Unfortunately it shall remain speculation so long as global temperatures continue to fall.
You stole my idea Joe. QE and almost every alarmist(I’m not sure of QE’s true position) seem to be making a huge assumption that rising temperatures will lead to widesread drought. It’s almost impossible to predict that sort of connection.
The regions that are already experiencing drought probably have a stable number of kidney stone cases. If every corner of the earth has water shortages, we’ve got bigger problems than kidney stones.
Stop the presses!
Fat People and Polar Bears
I had kidney stones a couple of years ago. This episode was worse than most, and when I continued to bleed several days after passing the last stone I went to the hospital. The following conversation went like this:
“How do you know you passed a kidney stone?”
“Because when I went to pee I fired a live round. Hurt like freakin’ hell.”
“By ‘live round’ you mean a kidney stone, yes?”
“Yeah. Little piece of broken glass covered in blood.”
“Did you collect it? Do you have it with you?”
“Gee, doc, I don’t know what you do for fun on your planet, but on this one we don’t go fishing for souvenirs in the toilet boil. Cripes, man, that’s disgusting.”
Phooey.
“…But don’t take my word for it. By all means, read the Science Daily article, consider the smug sarcasm dripping from Kate’s post, and judge for yourselves.”
We don’t, we have, we enjoy, and we are…and all prior to getting your instructions and permission,QE.
QE;
Does it not bother you that AGW proponents have been proven wrong so far? Not so much by scientific arguments, but by simple temperature measurement that show a decline from ’98 to ’08 despite rising CO2 levels. Add to that a new peer reviewed study predicting more of the same for the next decade or so.
Do you question your faith in the predictions of people with respect to what is going to happen to temperatures over the next 100 years when they’re proven demonstrably wrong for the first 20 or so?
How much faith do you have in the level of human knowledge and understanding necessary to make such long range predictions, when our combined efforts can’t provide reliable next day or 5 day weather forecasts.
I realize that climate and weather are seperate things, but if we really do understand how the system works, figuring out local weather a few days in advance should be child’s play compared to long range predictions about the larger system.
What has been exposed for all but those who choose not to see is that our knowledge and understanding of how the earth’s climate operates is so woefully inadequate as to call into question virtually any public policy created to address it.
Not a comforting thought to be sure, but nonetheless true.

QE,
When you make a ridiculous statement like AGW causes kidney stones or that Jesus was the son of God, the onus is on you to prove it.
You must remember Occam’s Razor; the simplest explanation is often the correct one. Although people watch TV with a certain churchlike reverence you can’t just believe what the man at the front is saying.
Good luck,
Jon
Damn Proofreading,
In this instance Lisa would have accepted money for the rock. Sorry for the confusion.
QE,
Just google 32,000 scientists. Sorry ol* chap.
Brain size enlarges as one goes north?
That*s an error too. Those who go *way north do feel a swelling of the head, but it*s ego not brains.
Example: As one who has spent months on the north end of Elsmere Island, there was a swelled head feeling. So few humans set foot that far north, one tends to feel self – important. Ergo, ego, not *brains*.
I try not to mention it every chance I get out of humility. = TG
Once again the discussion has missed the fact that global warming doesn’t exist. There are now 32000 scholars who have signed their names to a petition saying so. This would seem to be a broader concensus than the 5 or 6 hundred that are following the dream. They go on to reiterate the fact that AGW is founded on junk science and good public relations.
“I would venture NO! Increased temperature may increase drought or it may increase rainfall. After all warm air holds more water than cold air. Speculation as to which one will be the result is just that speculation. Unfortunately it shall remain speculation so long as global temperatures continue to fall.”
Last year in BC it was warmer and drier than previous which, of course, was blamed on “climate change”
This year it was colder and wetter and it was blamed on -you guessed it- climate change.
And here, all along, I thought it was all George Bush’s fault. I wish they would make up thier minds.

UK News via Email . . .
Here in the UK, we are currently experiencing an upsurge in green consciouness amongst the big energy companies, and it can’t be long before the US follows suit. Many companies are beginning to offer schemes and incentives to encourage households to recieve their power 100% from renewable sources i.e. scottish hyrdo electric’s ‘better plan’……..
hydro.co.uk/ForYourHome/EnergyProducts/betterplan.aspx
However, we are still miles behind most of our European counterparts, particularly Scandanavia. The statistics speak for themselves :
tinyurl.com/62baud
In 2006, the UK generated 4.6% of its electricity from renewables as opposed to Sweden (48.2%) and Norway (108.4%!)
Hopefully as more people become ‘green counscious’, we will see many households switching to these schemes and the momentum for renewable energy sources will build quicker than expected, both here and in the US-this bill would help this process along IMO.

Like I said earlier, Norway sells oil and prefers NOT to burn it. = TG
What Norway (or any other country) does with their oil (or need for it)is their buisness.
Norway is hobbled by its interdependence on EU polices, (EU’s “green” agenda)and ME oil dependence.
Not so with Canada. A comparison might be usefull.
“Canada, occupying about 10 million km2 and having a population of over 30 million (Table 1),
is one of the least densely populated countries in the world.
Canada has strong seasonal changes and large regional variations in temperature.
The rigorous climate, the energy intensive nature of the country’s industries,
and the large distances between population centres produce a high per capita energy use.

I, as a Canadian, am getting tired of some people trying to import a “european soloution” for a problem we don’t have.(energy available)
A lot of people invested big time into “alternative” energy schemes, just as they invested in Bre-X.
They were sold on making a buck while getting in on something new and hot.
“Snake-oil” sells cheap once everyone knows they’ve been conned.
The “green” agenda is nothing but noise distracting Canadians from a coherent energy policy of using what we have,(oil and nuclear) in a manner that enriches Canada as a nation.
Norway can sell chickens and prefer not to eat them. So what?
G
Correction:
That should read
Norway is hobbled by its interdependence on EU polices. (EU’s “green” agenda and ME oil dependence)
I’m sorry
G
Still waiting for qe to explain how CO2 levels were ten times higher during the last Ice Age, than they are now, yet it was colder.
Or, for that matter, how it is that CO2 levels were lower than they are now about a million years ago, yet it was warmer.
TG “As one who has spent months on the north end of Elsmere Island, there was a swelled head feeling.”
And all the time I thought it was due to fuel oil fumes and cabin fever;-) The Chosen Frozen still needed the Box Top crew to deliver pizza.
Can anyone tell me why we have not used the gathered geniuses living in the various Innuit tribes. I am sure they would like to comment on this article.
When you make a ridiculous statement like AGW causes kidney stones or that Jesus was the son of God, the onus is on you to prove it.
The first statement is different than the second statement. The first is a prediction that can’t be proven, the second is a fact proven by scripture. The onus is not on me to prove scripture. I refer you to a higher authority. The fact you don’t know Him is not a failing on my part.
A quick glance at the referenced items unequivocally proves one thing. The regurgitation is perpetrated by the same small nucleus repeatedly.
From G;
“Norway is hobbled by its interdependence on EU polices, (EU’s “green” agenda)and ME oil dependence.
Not so with Canada. A comparison might be usefull.”
Norway has investments similar to Alberta’s heritage fund of approx. 350 billion. Alberta has approx. 35 billion. How does that make Norway hobbled?
Hugger
QE,
“Rising average temperatures—whatever their cause(s)—can indeed lead to higher risk of dehydration, particularly in parts of the world already prone to drought.”
Heat doesn’t cause dehydration. Not drinking enough water to replace fluid loss causes dehydration. You can keep hydrated in the mid-summer sun in Saudi Arabia or the Sahara if you bring lots of water with you. Heat stroke is another matter…
One of the places on earth you are most prone to dehydrate is in alpine areas where it is below zero. Climbers must be very attuned to their water intake because the air is very dry and you lose fluids quickly (combined with physical work required to climb.)
This sort of un-scientific crap (designed for the sole purpose of generating headlines in an attempt to increase government funded research money) is the same thing that led the Goracle and other lying propagandists of the leftard set to claim that the ice on Kilimanjaro was “melting” due to warming temps.
The ice is not melting. There are no rivers full of glacial runoff streaming down Kilimanjaro. The ice is evaporating – it doesn’t go from ice to water, it goes from ice to vapour. This is enirely natural.
There is an unnatural aspect to the fact that ice is receding: It isn’t being replaced because of deforestation. The forests store moisture which is released by trees in the form of vapour which forms clouds which causes precipitation – which on top of mountains usually falls as snow which is then compressed over time to form glaciers.
Cutting down the forests eliminates the forests ability to trap water and release it as vapour to form clouds.
Lack of precipitation is more of a problem in receding glaciers than heat.
It’s cold at near-20,000 feet up.
