Y2Kyoto: Spontaneous Baby Combustion

Across Australia, the "wet nappy cooling effect" is no longer effective in protecting babies from dangerous overheating;

The two-year study at a major children's hospital showed that for every five-degree rise in temperature two more children under six years old were admitted with fever to that hospital.

The University of Sydney research is the first to make a solid link between climate changes and childhood illness.

"And now global warming is becoming more apparent, it is highly likely an increasing number of young children will be turning up at hospital departments with these kinds of common illnesses," said researcher Lawrence Lam, a paediatrics specialist.

"It really demonstrates the urgent need for a more thorough investigation into how exactly climate change will affect health in childhood."

Dr Lam said the results, collated from The Children's Hospital at Westmead admissions, back up beliefs that children are less able to regulate their bodies against climate change than adults.

The brain's thermal regulation mechanism is not as well developed in children, making them more susceptible to "overheating" and at risk of developing illness, he said.

"They're particularly at risk of extreme changes, much more than other people."

This of course, is why mothers in Canada careless enough to expose children under 4 to sub-zero winter air always warm them slowly in the refrigerator or a cool basement before exposing them to the artificially high temperatures of homes with central heating - to keep them from bursting into goddamn flame.

Another drop kick for science through the goal posts of crazy.

let me get this calculation right for every 5 degrees we get 2 more children. so with a half degree per century we will get .005 degrees per year or 0.01 extra kid per night/per year,

as an old rig hand used to tell me, I think that would be within the "margarine of error".

would be worth a gubmint grant or two.

When your 'issue' is warming, you just got to go 'global' Kate?

Watch out for those nappy fires! Keep your extinguisher handy.

Of course if you want to accelerate 'global warming' a few nukes will get you there quicker.

Rational 'madness' coming to your home soon.

so as the world continues to cool, which is what is actually happening right now and fewer children will be admitted to hospitals, we can save megatonnes of money by shutting down unnecessary wards and needing excess nurses & doctors.

Cool !! Maybe my taxes wil go down enough so I can afford a new Hummer

I think alot more kids are going to be suffering here is why

When the really hot summer days come, you know like the ones we get all the time, normal temperatures? Remember those? Plus 30 celcius, well we are all gonna let little Johnny and Susie bake(as well as ol grandma) becouse we are all going "green"

So here I am, sweating with no AC, with no more right guard because the scent might offend someone, sitting in the dark not spending any money on gas, to go somewhere like a movie or eating out. Or in any way else contributing to the entertainment economy.

Nor am I watching TV creating any sort of advertising revenue for sponsers.

Cannot read the newspaper or a magazine That cost energy so I will not contribut to that.(well it was dark remember)

Can't go online anymore because my monitor uses power and I need to use, what was that 75% less than in 1990?

I can't go to the local park anymore, what with the dandylions and the skeeters(as well as the punks but that is a topic for another day)

Cannot drink beer anymore because well, the carbon cost of growing, brewing, transporting and keeping it cold is just too much to justify(but ya know...I see lots of bottled water...who do you think drinks that stuff?)

I sold-no wait I still have it, the govt just made it illigal-my boat, but can't use it either. Too much wasted carbon.

My point is, follow what Kyoto is supposed to be and we will all be in the dark and you can't do ANYTHING anymore! It will send a kid in Australia to the hospital!

Posted by: jeff at February 23, 2007 4:53 PM

So when we went to the Carribean to work and the year round temperature changed from the variable temps of Canada to, like 83 almost every day, our daughter should have had more fevers? Funny how we didn't notice that.

"Cannot drink beer anymore because well, the carbon cost of growing, brewing, transporting and keeping it cold is just too much to justify(but ya know...I see lots of bottled water...who do you think drinks that stuff?)"

OMFG!!!! CO2 is used to carbonate beer! What the hell are we going to replace our beer with when it goes the way of the Dodo because of the Kyoto carbon tax that's going to be applied to it!!!!

New conspiracy theory: Wine snobs are behind the implementation of Kyoto to rid the world of our lovely beer. Bastards!

Warning to Australian Liberals who fear for their children over-heating due to global warming.

If you note that in Equatorial Africa where they have had ultra warm weather dating back to prehistoric times ... their children all appear to be burnt completely black.

Is that crazy enough for ya?

Ask Al Gore about this phenomenon ... he knows everything for sure.

fond childhood memories:

coming home after a saturday all day on the toboggan slope, thumbs so cold they had no feeling or movement.

I learned after about 4 or 5 times to NOT put my hands on the full blast of hot air from the huge air duct right over the converted gas furnace in order to prevent what ma told me was chill blanes (sp), an itchy uncomfortable sensation from the sudden temp change.

the next time it happened was when I was in to scuba diving and would come up out of 50 degree water into the hot beach sand and sun and get red splotches all over my legs.

so it would seem in the area of climate change Im all set !!!

This is guaranteed to lower the global temperature.

First, blame everything on global warming. It's far easier than having to think about stuff.

Then make a lot of noise to try to make someone else change their evil ways, whether or not you have evidence that they were a problem in the first place or that changing will make any difference.

Problem solved.

CO2 is used to carbonate beer!

Actually, the end results of yeast beasties eating sugar are C02 and alcohol.

A well-made beer is therefore naturally carbonated with C02.

A Molson or Labatt "product," on the other hand, has to be artificially pumped full of C02 because they spend far more on advertising than on their widget.

Who would believe there is so many people in the scientific field that have very little or no reason.(brains). I guess a degree means you passed the test, it doen't mean you are smart. Most of these studies start with the answer they want. Sad but it must be true.

Posted by: Ken E. at February 23, 2007 7:39 PM

Note to Reid on beer and wine. CO2 is a natural product of fermentation for beer and wine. Wineries vent to the atmosphere as it is fermenting. Breweries capture the CO2 and reinject into the beer before it is bottled. The CO2 is released when you belch. (Or beer farts too).

Posted by: Greg at February 23, 2007 7:43 PM

No Reid, wine is made by fermentation too. The natural results of fermentation is roughly equal amounts of alcohols and CO2.

All alcohols are made in this fashion be they beers, wines, or spirits.

Sorry but it's obviously the non-drinker crowd who are pushing Kyoto.

Later,he furiously lashed out at Albertans, calling rapid development of the oilsands "insanity",and a "disaster"
Suzuki, who was invited to speak at Altadore school, and accept $835.collected by students for his foundation asked THE KIDS,what Harper's main priority was after being elected last year.
"The only thing he cares about is getting re-elected with a majority government" he said, adding any of the PM's pledges to preserve the environment are cynical ploys to that end.
"I don't believe there is a green bone in Harper's body-he has never, ever indicated he cares about the environment"
He then told the room, some of his message was directed at the adults, because"kids don't vote",and Harper and other politicians DON'T CARE ABOUT THEM !!!!!!!!!"

The story says the temp is rising and children are dying. So the inbred knuckle-walking cons come out to cheer each other on over their denial of the environmental facts, and exchange a self-congratulatory pat on the ass for excessive ignorance and stupidity. They remain clueless to the mechanisms of global warming and find comfort in groups that belittle the scientists that bring news that they find disagreeable to their uninformed biases.
Let’s face it, dead children are ok for cons as long as the oil continues to flow. How odd that American cons hold the same ideology in Iraq; so long as the oil flows, what are a few dead foreign children.
The fumes from the tar sands must be getting to what’s left of their con brains.

I thus have had an excuse to research global warming so that I can be informed for my future students' sake. I will spare the details, but have come to this conclusion. Anyone that beleives that the science of APW has been settled is either misinformed or is deliberately lying in order to advance a political agenda.

btw - Something I never thought of before: Why are the ice caps on Mars shrinking? (It turns out that they are mostly water ice not dry ice.) Are humans on Mars burning fossil fuels? No. This is more evidence that it is the solar radiation that drives global (Earth and Mars) temps, not so much CO2. http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2003/07aug_southpole.htm

albatros sounds like a poster boy for the public school system: the mushier brained the children become, the more the establishment blathers on about teaching "critical thinking skills".

And what good are such skills in this closed system, when the only ideas allowed are decreed by our politically correct overlords and enforced by their jackboots? albatros fits right in with these delusional hypocrites: he actually believes that his minuscule, biased opinions are valid. What a dupe! And thank goodness, there are places like sda, where critical thinkers may actually engage in critical thinking!

albatros39a,

Taylor wasn't refering to *annual* changes in the polar caps, but a trend of *cumulative* changes in the polar caps, and what that might suggest. Never short stop your research, just because you think you have found the support for your position and thusly need look no further.

From NASA:

http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/mgs/newsroom/20050920a.html

"And for three Mars summers in a row, deposits of frozen carbon dioxide near Mars' south pole have shrunk from the previous year's size, suggesting a climate change in progress."

If the pedigrees of benefactors are to be questioned, such as you have done in the case of The Heartland Institute, I would guess the pedigrees of the benefactors supporting the various pro-AGW groups should also be examined. Want to guess where some of the pro-AGW scientists (and in this case I use the descriptive scientist with reluctance) are getting their funding.

BTW, I simply must ask: What IS that thing hanging around your neck?

Posted by: Yoop at February 25, 2007 10:26 AM

An open question to albatros39a:

Since you should be up to a direct scientific question, by your own claim ("because I’m a fourth year undergrad in; can you guess? It’s in environmental science") I have a question you might attempt to address.

I have asked this question of a number of scientists, and pseudo-scientists, who are unequivocally in support of the theory of AGW, or ACC. I always get an abrupt change of subject, or an all-of-a-sudden need for them to see someone they just spotted on the other side of the room.

So, what do YOU think. Approximately 10,000 years ago the northern part of the North American continent was covered by an ice sheet that, in places, was over two miles thick, and which had a southern edge that extended south of the Great Lakes region. It was so thick, massive and extensive that it caused the crust to *sink* in that area. The crust in the Great Lakes region is still, to this date, rebounding from that massive weight.

At that time (approx. 10,000 ya) there was very little population by man, very little burning of fossil fuels, no industrialization, and no evidence of any massive disruptions of a geological nature (i.e. Deccan or Columbia sized plateau basalt eruptions, or massive bolide collisions).

So, what changed at that time (circa 10,000 +/- years ago) that would have warmed the climate and caused the melting of such a large ice mass, and it's retreat back to the polar region? A retreat, btw, that continues today.

You know... just askin'.

Bob, Suzuki was invited in to give a talk, not a debate, and the parents came to listen to him talk. He gave them what they came for.
Debate is one thing, but purposely feeding children false information is completely different animal.

Yoop, the answer to that question was posted here. http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/005638.html

Any climatologist or environmental scientist would have been able to answer that before you could have finished the question. I'd say that you asked the wrong "scientist".
