Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

“Redux, how do you account for the fact that it was conservative Alberta which legislated and practiced eugenics, not Sask???”
Sask and Man both have arbitrary institutionalization and wardship of estates…so they got a real dose od wheatfield communism.
Eugenics was very popular in the 20s-50s …it was thought to be advanced social planning and ALL political philosophies which proposed the purpose of government was to “engineer” society bought into it ( which is socialism and Fascism) …these are primarily utopian statist idealisms.
My question back to you is what made you think Aberhart or Social Credit was “conservative” or right wing?? He was into a theocractic form of social credit…an economic off shoot of Fabian socialism.
Remember Alberta was also into the UFA which was an agrarian socialist/collectivist government…this eastern lib-left myth about Alberta being a long term right wing province is about as accurate as anything else in their myopic dogma.
Alberta is POPULIST and largely culturally conservative but libertarian civilly…and they had their fling with prairie socialism or “progressivism” as it was called then…many local historians attribute the success of UFA and Soc cred socialism as meeting Alberta’s need for populist regimes…. but when the voter realized these socialist systems came with civil control systems, they dumped them….SC was on the skids had not Ernie Manning reinvented it as fiscal conservatism and laissez faire economics….when Lougheed offered populism tied to conservative economics and libertarian civil and economic policy, they found the voter’s sweet spot.
What the Greek said.
And try this on for size…
“Well given the time in which these comments were made, the governmen’ts approach to placing Indian children in residential schools was much more enlightened than many….”
“Well given the time in which these comments were made, the government’s approach to placing Japanese in internment camps was much more enlightened than many….”
Hey – they were men of their times. But pay pay pay we do.
As always, however, some men of those times were more equal than others. Or more protected from modern scrutiny.
The NDP openly promotes Tommy Douglas on their campaign buttons. Fair game. As is my exposure of him via Youtube.
Watch for more.
To be fair, however, we can’t relate our moral views of today to those of 30, 40, 50 years ago.
Yeah, progresive morals seem to change with whichever way the wind blows.
Matthew 11:7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
Why are some pathetic theories about human nature, or science in general, deemed excusable because of the prevailing thought at the time?
Wrong is wrong. McClung’s eugenics, Kiefer’s ancestor, Chairman Mao, Nazi camp doctors.
The greatest sickness of all is the mental disease of relativism. The greatest obstruction to human achievement is socialism.
It would be nice to see Saskatchewan join the rest of us in the 21st century.
“Ted:
Do you believe in the sanctity of human life?”
LOL 😀
Yeah a pro abotrion Liberal offering moral judgements on eugenics LMAO.
Modern Liberalism and domestic socialism has adopted quite a lot of old socialist statism’s dogma, and with it, the idealism which holds government’s purpose to control society through social engineering…front and center in their dogma is the tools of the old styled eugenics freak…abortion, population control, euthenasia.
Go crap up a rope, your hypocracy has you so constipated you’re about to explope. LOL
The world’s worst Ideas ALL propose social control and engineered societies:
Theocracy
Statist socialism
Corporate Feudalism (Fascism)
Keynesian economics
The only regimes I’m interested in offer more persoanl freedom and less government control (regardless as to how they label themselves…and brand name political labels are meaningless in post WW2 federal/global politics)”
ethical anarchy
Libertarian democracy
Libertarian conservatism
Laissez faire free market capitalism
Dodos @2.09pm said “Douglas’ approach was much more enlightened than many. As he says, during his time, homosexuality was seen as criminal behaviour with individuals going to jail for engaging in consensual (sic) sexual acts. Better they be treated as sick then as criminals.”
I’m beginning to understand why you picked your alias…
First, homosexuality was a crime at the time, hence those who were convicted of such were, by legal definition, criminals.
Second, TD was NOT “more enlightened”. He was exhibiting the characteristic behaviour of all weak-brained and morally-vapid people in refusing to attribute to any person the responsibility for their actions.
And that, ladies and gentlemen on the sinister side, is why we mock St. Tommy…and all similar folk that shy away from the notion of personal responsibility.
Politics in a nutshell (idealized):
Liberals: It’s everybody’s fault, therefore it’s nobody’s fault, and nothing has to be done.
NPD: It’s someone else’s fault, so make the rich pay.
Conservative: It’s my fault, so I’ll fix it.
Bravo, Tenebris!
I wonder what the Conservative leaders of th day thought of homosexuality….
“SC was on the skids had not Ernie Manning reinvented it as fiscal conservatism and laissez faire economics….” Exactly, under the 25 year tenure of this social, fiscal conservative, eugenics was the law of the land.
“No, manny. His thinking on the subject 30 years ago is light years ahead of your stereotype of the typical right-wing conservative today”
Louise, ever take a look at World Nut Daily?
Or check out http://www.conservapedia.com/Homosexuality
Or if you got an honest answer from the Reform wing of the Conservative Party, you’d find it ain’t no stereotype.
The NDP openly promotes Tommy Douglas on their campaign buttons.” Yes, but the right-wing alternative SP has no one from their sorry past that they can point to with any pride whatsoever.
Yes, but the right-wing alternative SP has no one from their sorry past that they can point to with any pride whatsoever.
Real men and women stand on their own two feet, not needing to be propped up by figures from the past.
Is that what you call your entitled to your (cradle to grave farm subsidies) entitlements mentality, hoss, standing on your own two feet???
Our Crown corp should be off limits. What choices do you get in Alberta? Telus and who??
Does anyone know the date of TC’s comments? I’m thinking late 1960s, but did we have colour TV then?
Tommy said during the 1968 election, which took place on June 25 1968. Exactly 25 years later, to the day, Kim Campbell became PM. Was that a sorry day.
One can tell how frightened of NDP victory Saskatchewan right wingers are when they resort to mocking a dead guy for his opinions from 40 plus years ago.
…opinions which were more enlightened then what the average person thought at that particular time. It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that back in those days in lovely right wing Alberta, homosexuals were being sent to mental institutions and getting sterilized.
Iberia,
Homosexuals were being sent to the mental institution in Weyburn here in Saskatchewan at the time.
And I do believe it is the left wingers who are in a panic.
As far as Tommy’s enlighten views, have you read his thesis lately?
Just illustrates how for most of society has been lead down the garden path.
As Tenebris points out it shows the trend near the beginning
Andy: “…late 1960s … did we have colour TV then?”
Yes. But there was no internet, xbox, ipod, dvd, VHS, mp3, cell phones, etc etc.
“Our Crown corp should be off limits. What choices do you get in Alberta? Telus and who??”
1.)”Ma Bell” from the East (primarily cell phones)
2.)Land-Based High-Speed Internet
a.)Vonage.ca
b.)Shaw “Home Phone”
3.)Fibre-Optic “Alberta Super-Net”
Next? 😉

manny: Does the phrase “What have you done for me lately?” ring a bell?
Trent:
It’s time you and the other retarded right wingers realize that you sound like a broken record. “Tommy Douglas supported eugenics, blah, blah, blah.” So did WInston Churchill. When are you going to start critisizing him?
Iberia said: ‘One can tell how frightened of NDP victory Saskatchewan right wingers are when they resort to mocking a dead guy for his opinions from 40 plus years ago.’
Same could be said: One can tell how frightened of Sask Party victory left wingers are when they resort to attacking former politicians and parties for their opinions, policies and practices from two years ago to 1905.
this is history. set you free, peace, order and good gov. is pierre elliot twadles motto.
Iberia,
The thesis is just the beginning of Tommy’s many failures. The CCF had 19 failed Crown Corps that left the province $400 million in debt! Tommy and his cronies did so many shady deals, like a mink ranch outside of Regina owned by then Premier Douglas which received huge SEDCO loans, which went mainly to Tommy’s salary for being the President, and the loans were then forgiven by C.M. Fines when the ranch went broke. Read your history.
As far as why we are bring this all up, it is only right that it is remembered and taught. Every historical person has their faults paraded out as well as their strengths after their death. ie We all know Conservative Prime Minister Sir John A. McDonald was a drunk and a womanizer.
It’s interesting to note that the eugenics movements world wide morphed into Planned Parenthood groups of today, now counselling for and abetting abortions.
Tommy’s eugenics notion didn’t die with him, but continues to thrive and we get to fund the abortions with our taxes in our ‘Canadian Values’ single tiered “Universal Health Care.”
The health care, that kills fetuses!

“…in the first year of widespread Medicare the average annual income for doctors increased by an average of $3,000.”
I thought medicare was cheaper. Elimination of profits, and all that…
Joe:
Funny, then, how it was the evangelical social conservatives like Bible Bill Aberhart and Ernest Manning who actually enacted eugenics legislation that lasted until the 1970s, unlike TD who publicly abandoned such notions when he became an adult.
I am actually no fan of TD. But this constant harping back to his “eugenics thesis” which he wrote when he was a kid and rejected in 1938 is silly and petty and outright wrong. And the silliness and pettiness and wrongness of others in reverse doesn’t excuse it.
I think you have your facts wrong. The “Common Sense” leaders of the Tory party left us broke. Why? Because they had no common sense.

………………
TOMMY DOUGLAS WAS BORN IN 1904
……………….
Making him 29 years old when he submitted his thesis.
Not exactly a kid.
After having read the first twelve pages of his thesis my feeling is the thesis was more than the idle cogitation of a mere youngster.
This was the belief system of a mature adult, willing to put in practice his vision of a better society.
And I reiterate the Planned Parenthood Organizations that flourish today are eerie vestiges of that Tommy Douglas thesis.
Let’s do it for Mulroney and Devine.2 true Canadians. The purveyers of common sense. They were so smart!!
Don’t forget Dick Culver,Colon Thatcher and the disgraced Tory MLA who got caught with the 14 year old hooker. Be pround.I’m a loud and I’m proud.
Again, Joe, unlike a heck of a lot of social conservatives who were out there actually doing something to promote eugenics – like passing LAWS in favour – Douglas rejected eugenics fully and completely. Interesting irony, perhaps, to follow your logic that the population control eugenicism of the Aberharts and Mannings of Canada resulted in Planned Parenthood?
Calling Douglas a eugenicist is as idiotic as calling Stephen Harper a Liberal just because he used to be a member of the Liberal Party.
You guys are ones Morgantaler missed.
We have the highest growth in GNP per capita in Canada and the news media still makes fun of Lorne Calvert. If you Tories lose the election dn’t blame the media. They’re on your side. Whoever controls the media controls the election. And don’t you forget it.
