In the Inland Empire, an economically depressed region in Southern California, President Obama’s health care law is expected to extend insurance coverage to more than 300,000 people by 2014. But coverage will not necessarily translate into care: Local health experts doubt there will be enough doctors to meet the area’s needs. There are not enough now.
“Nissan and GE have completed their investigation into the instances of Nissan LEAFs experiencing on-board charging (OBC) issues when using certain EV chargers. Nissan has traced the root cause of the issue to the LEAFs OBC software that can allow damage to occur to its OBC components while using certain chargers and in certain instances, such as when a brief under voltage or blackout condition occurs. Nissan is working to address this issue as quickly as possible, and in the meantime is advising customers to avoid charging during times when brownouts or momentary power dips may be likely, such as during electrical storms or high power usage on the grid.”

Whenever a problem arises in Canada, an age-old trick to avoid doing anything is to just mouth the words “We don’t need American style solutions” to any & all proposed solutions. All discussion then comes to a screeching halt.
This technique has most frequently been used whenever the topic of Improving Canada’s Healthcare arises but now it’s being used to keep the Guardian Angels out of Toronto. Curtis Sliwa discusses the issue with Roy Green (@ 30:30 in the podcast).
Standard & Poor’s has cut its outlook to “negative” from “stable” on seven major Canadian financial institutions including Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank and Bank of Nova Scotia, attributing the change to soaring consumer debt levels and the increasingly fragile global economy.

For those who don’t know, PNAS stands for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and it has gained the unfortunate reputation for publishing scientific research articles that regularly get knocked out of the park within hours of their release. The lack of rigor stems from its rather unique “peer-review” process in which National Academy members can submit articles for publication that the authors themselves have had “peer-reviewed”—that is, they passed the article by a couple of friends of theirs for comments. It’s more like “pal review.”
