“You can tell from the general run of incidents that the proprietors feel they need to take some actions to ensure the long-term credibility of the papers…”
The “actions” include reinstating Jamie Irving as vice-president a mere six weeks after using the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal to launch a fabricated political hit piece.

If you were to think that the most embarrassing passage in this inartful attempt at defamation occurs with the revelation that a “professor of journalism” doesn’t know the difference between a “blogger” and a “commentor”, you’d be wrong.
And if you were to conclude that the primary embarrassment is that a one time professional fact-checker failed to notice a prominent feature on the main page of SDA titled “About Kate”, you’d also be wrong.
No, the most embarrassing part is that John Gordon Miller’s wee tantrum was published for nearly two weeks before someone managed to stumble upon it and pass the link along to me.
I guess that’s why Professor Miller calls himself a “journalism doctor”, and not a “circulation doctor”.

In short a New York Times article, an article from The Newspaper of Record, is based entirely on a reporter talking to her chums.
What Happens In Vegas … Hits The Drudge Report
I think I’m going to sign up for the Las Vegas Review-Journal;
This newspaper traces its roots to before Las Vegas was Las Vegas.
We’ve seen cattle ranches give way to railroads. We chronicled the construction of Hoover Dam. We reported on the first day of legalized gambling. The first hospital. The first school. The first church. We survived the mob, Howard Hughes, the Great Depression, several recessions, two world wars, dozens of news competitors and any number of two-bit politicians who couldn’t stand scrutiny, much less criticism.
We’re still here doing what we do for the people of Las Vegas and Nevada. So, let me assure you, if we weathered all of that, we can damn sure outlast the bully threats of Sen. Harry Reid.

No End In Sight To Worldwide Glut Of Journalists
A 5-year-old Van Buren kindergarten student who disappeared on the first day of classes was found safe in a first-grade classroom.
Oh, Those Moral And Intellectual Superiors!
Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
Toronto Star – So, long live the best blogs in their evolution into appendages of the mainstream media.
TechDirt – it appears that CNN didn’t avoid Balko’s research and reporting either, in its own reporting on Hayne, as a part of Anderson Cooper 360. Much of what was done by CNN appears to have come straight from Balko’s research — and sources quoted by CNN told Balko that CNN claims it found them via his articles. But, does CNN credit Balko for any of it? Nope. Not at all.

The Montreal Gazette headline screams!* – Tim Hortons In Damage Control Mode
Canada’s coffee giant has served up some controversy south of the border after a regional Tim Hortons office in Rhode Island agreed to sponsor a rally hosted by an anti-gay-marriage organization.
I’m too busy at the moment to drive to town to witness the corporate destruction for myself, . but I figure lots of you out there have camera phones. Let the damage reports roll in….

Not Waiting For The Asteroid

Earlier this month, [Associated Press] announced it would distribute “watchdog and investigative journalism” penned not by its own staff or that of member papers, but by four outside groups: the Center for Investigative Reporting in Barkeley, Calif.; New York-based ProPublica; and two D.C. outfits, the Center for Public Integrity (CPI) and the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University.
AP, itself a not-for-profit enterprise, identified the four organizations as “civic-minded” nonprofits. They also all have decidedly liberal sponsors. A cursory glance at the “independent” news shops reveals their reliance on left-tilting patrons such as the Knight Foundation and leftist donors such as financier Herbert Sandler and currency speculator George Soros.
