Carnival Of The Newbies

I have quite a number of new blogs to introduce – and for this Newbie Carnival, advice on how to build readership for your blog, courtesy of three established Canadian bloggers.
I’m Not Paranoid is a sacred cow free zone.
Shaken, Occasionally Stirred is gaining a reputation for doing first-rate digging into stories that don’t get a lot of attention elsewhere.
Either Orr has been posting up a storm from Pennsylvania.
Right Ho! is “a conservative journalist by trade (for real, no fooling), but I have decided to remain anonymous for now”.
The Firebrand – “resurrects the ghost” of WL Mackenzie in his approach to political debate.
More To The Story is keeping an “eye on politics”, including this morning’s story that Pat O’Brien may walk away from the LIberals over SSM.
Craig Cantin was inspired to blog by both Warren Kinsella and me? This could get interesting.
David MacLean’s new blog has been mentioned here before – it’s promising to be a good resource for the rest of us: Taxpayers Federation
A conservative from Mississauga, Reasonable Right joins the growing list of blogging accountants – as does Canada’s John Galt a CPA who writes on politics, taxation, economics, and culture…
Lunchpale was recommended by a friend who suggests “he’s probably too dumb to put himself on your newbie express.” (He isn’t)
We need more voices from the Maritimes – welcome Jean Leblanc from New Brunswick.
China E-Lobby“An organization dedicated to exposing the abuses of human rights, threats to American security, and attacks on general decency committed by Communist China, and to influencing American policy to ensure these egregious acts do not go unopposed.”
Though US based, this is a blog to watch, in light of Chinese government/military investments in Canadian resources.
Saskatchewan is becoming a hotbed for bloggers – introducing Black Sheep Press, a self-described ” libertarian with Western Separatist leanings”.
John Murney is a former broadcast journalist, strong libertarian and currently a full-time time student at the U of R. (Well, they’ll cure that soon enough!)
The Liberty Letter – another Saskabusher!
Exposed Agenda hails from Calgary, Alberta.
Invisible Hand has been “fighting statism since late last night”.
I Hate Hippies and Communists. This rather says it all – “We need to get back to a time where we openly hate these two groups.”
“In the spirit of Cyrano de Bergerac, I try to take the road less trodden – replacing vulgar, low-brow name-calling with classy, high-brow name-calling.” (What the hell is “Vogon poetry”?)
Like SDA, habamus rodentum doesn’t seem to have much to do with rodents.
Late additions:
Sham The Toryman
The story behind Gomery Inquiry
And now for the advice
Darcey at the popular Dust My Broom offers helpful hints for newbies, including this – “I began to understand that in the blogosphere, links are like money and you may have noticed that I link a lot and have staged many big link fests. I didn’t initially mean them to drive traffic or raise standings or anything like that. Basically they are bookmarks of interest to me that I wish to keep and refer to in the future. They do however have an effect.” Good observations about “crumbtrails”, too.
Poltiical Staples was one of my first favourite reads when I started blogging – ” … don’t worry about traffic too much in the beginning, focus on finding your voice. But once you are confident that you’ve found your groove join blog groups. This is the single best way of getting your blog noticed. Commenting on other peoples blogs helps as well but follow etiquette. Make your comment applicable to the post – don’t comment just to get noticed.”
Andrew at Bound By Gravity writes;

  • Don’t be discouraged if your traffic takes time to build up; there are very few instant superstars in the blogosphere.
  • Post at regular intervals that you are comfortable with. I usually do this by setting goals. I started off targetting 3 posts per week, then 1 post per day, and now I’m comfortable with 2-3 posts per day.
  • Don’t link to every Andrew Coyne/Mark Steyn/Colby Cosh article on the planet. Far too many bloggers do that already. You want to fill a unique niche.
There you go! I’ll do another in a couple of months, so if you were missed, just watch for the notice and join the next one.
The first two Newbie Carnivals are here and here. Go check them out, and see how they’re coming along.

  • Upcoming Carnival Of The Newbies

I’ll probably pull a Newbie Carnival together by next weekend. If you’ve started a blog in the past month or two, and haven’t already been part of one of the previous two, send me your URL and a brief description, and start writing. Suggestion: if you’ve only just begun, maybe wait a little longer and build some content before asking to join in. My email address is on the sidebar.
    (Past carnivals here and here.)
Also – to round things out I’m asking established bloggers to share their helpful hints on getting your blog off the ground and building traffic. Just shoot your comments to me by email, or if you prefer to compose a post on the topic, send me the URL.

    Comments Policy Notice

Notice: While most of the regulars here keep the profanity and personal insults in the comments section to a minimum, it’s starting to get carried away. I’m not expecting perfection, but I’d like it kept in check. There are readers using work computers, for one thing, and I don’t want them tuning out the site because of you. I don’t have time to monitor all comments here, but I will be inclined to ban offenders if it gets carried away, and you may not get a first warning.
    OK?

    The Power Of Blogs

For a time last night, my post on Paul Martin’s “Rogue Government” at Outside The Beltway was the number one Google News hit for “Paul Martin”. This morning, it’s still holding at #3, right behind stories at CTV and the Washington Post.
Remember those days of writing a letter to the editor, in hopes your (edited) views might see publication?
    They’re over, baby.

    Going Mainstream

A NY Sun article on Pajamas Media. A heads up to readers – I’m looking seriously at signing up with Roger’s group and taking some ads. With the increase of traffic, the hosting fees are starting to creep up. I’ve never had a tip jar, because until now the monthly fees cost me less than a case of beer.
    Thoughts? Which would you prefer?

  • Tip Jar (not particularly effective)
  • Advertising (and somewhat slower loading)
  • Pledge drives (ugh)
  • More Newbies!

Only a week after the inaugural Carnival of the Newbies I have a several others to introduce. I may make this a semi-regular exercise, if the rate of blog propogation in Canada continues at this pace. However, some advice – be sure you actually have some meat on your blog bone before tossing it to the hordes. Work at things a week or two before sending me any mail about what you have to offer.

    The Black Kettle
    Reject The Cookie
    More To The Story
    Cream of the Crock
    The Maple Lounge
    Rogue Political Mind
Random Notes – Check out the song “Poor Paul”
This one isn’t new. Just “born again”… Paul Martin’s Blog
    Happy surfing!

    Oops

I had a draft post sitting open in my browser with a handful of new blogs that wanted a little publicity… and accidentally nuked it. Please drop them in the comments today, and I’ll promise to get it up tomorrow. (Besides, a couple of you were on your first day, and it’s better to wait until you have.. eh.. something to read, before I send traffic your way.)

Spring. The grass is sprouting, the birds are singing and and after a winter spent …. well, let’s just say we have a few new pups venturing into the blogosphere.
Let’s begin with Vidanges du diable a new blog in French! Stphane tells me that “petits animaux morts” inspired him to start. Babelfish didn’t pull up any “stupid bitch from Saskatchewan” translations, so I guess that’s a compliment. 😉
From Ottawa, Gold Blogger is the funniest site you’ll ever read on gold markets.

I don’t even need a computer or a trading account. Just pull out wads of money from my pockets and set fire to it in the pail.

The Blue Maple Leaf from Winnipeg is out of the chute quickly, with a couple of mentions in the mainstream press. Another Manitoban to keep an eye on – the Black Rod is heavily into investigative work. Over at Kyid we have recipes too!
Right Thinking People is already one of my favourites. “News and views, for (and by) those with intellectual – but lacking utterly in bureaucratic – ambition.” Another right thinking person, Citizen Command, Citizen Journalist!
Max Taffey at Million Blogs goes down the pop culture road.
Brendan and Paul write The-Comment from deep behind enemy lines. Warwick covers university, politics, media from Ontario, as does another right-of-center blogger, Jason Hickman’s V for Victory. Also blogging from the “dead zone” of Canadian conservativsim, Dissonance and Disrespect. Hoping for a better Canada, Canadianna.
Maybe there’s hope yet for that province.
From the left, Impolitical is so new it’s not yet dry. From Toronto. See? At SDA, it’s all about “fair and balanced”.
Back to regular right programming with Crittermusings.
Down the heavily travelled Liberal scandal trail …. regular commentor Rob hosts Liberal Scandal Record. Alberta based Tribil doesn’t look like a blog, but they host pages in which Liberal scandals are chronicled, so count on daily updates. In a similar vein, I mentioned Anticorruptiona few days ago.
late additions Eliza’s Corner from Alberta, a grandmother of 12 who’s just getting started. Raging Ranter and Keaimato get in just under the wire….
Featuring running poll aggregates – Potent Pew, a group blog on “law, information technology, city of god and man, canadian newspapers, global politics, the direction of western civilization” Well, that’s narrowing it down.
Also Canadian asks “You did say carnival of boobies, right?”
Crocodile Morsels is getting a second wind, no doubt inspired by recent political events.
Moldy Peaches. Not about fruit at all, but good enough for a segue to a blog from the Okanagan Valley – Is This all.
A little further to the west, “Are you ashamed yet?” is based in the lower mainland. He’ll be watching local politics unfold and blogging the nomination in Abbotsford.
“Malfeus Bachelor Tips” at Mind Vomit. O. K.
Vectorsphere doesn’t seem that new, but he passed his site along and it’s worth a visit.
Cannuckistan Chronicles is hosting a Moonbat Outreach at the moment. Once he has them, he closes his hands slowly around their throats and squeeezes….
Circling back around towards home, Ryan from Regina invites you to When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”.
You know the blogosphere is getting crowded when you get a link from someone who lives a couple of houses down the street. From Delisle, Catprint in the Mash is about “Sask and Cdn politics, Beer Brewing, and Linux Systems administration”. Oh, man – does it get any better than that?
Like I said, some of us really did spend the winter “making puppies” – a couple of the small live animals who arrived last week are ready to make their appearance.

    Anticorruption.ca

Lots of chatter about this new site, starring the Libranos; www.anticorruption.ca.
Now, can someone suggest to their web designers to get rid of the fancy toys? I can’t even access the site on this computer, because of the flash graphics. That’s a problem I see repeated all over the internet – a reliance on gizmos that add nothing to the content, but that render their sites unreadable on some computers.
Tip: If you have to tell people to download “an updated version” of a browser, your web design sucks. Aint gonna happen, so you better hope you didn’t care if they read it or not.
