Let’s say that somehow, the eruption we’ve all agreed to call Idle No More results in a historic breakthrough between Ottawa and Canada’s diverse and deeply troubled First Nations.
Let’s say the covenant recognizes and affirms aboriginal and treaty rights and contains a specific, collaborative action plan to deal with the urgent challenges of aboriginal childhood education, economic development, First Nations governance and accountability. Plus it comes with a startup $275 million just to be sure the rubber hits the road. And it’s announced at a historic gathering in Ottawa with the senior First Nations chiefs, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and even Governor-General David Johnston.
Now let’s say along comes an obstructionist “movement” that masquerades as militant but is really a minority faction of eccentric and reactionary Indian band chiefs who are hopelessly devoted to the status quo. They set out to methodically undermine the agreement. They hijack the work plan. Within a year they’ve pretty well sabotaged the whole thing.
A terrific column by Terry Glavin.

This is going to get confusing, someone down here is copycatting the First Nation guys’ name:
Wisconsin Occupier invites himself for cocktails with Gov. Scott Walker
Looks to me as if there are grounds for a straightforward copyright infringement action.
Quite a few years ago when I was in the Air Force, I was waiting to see an eye doctor and next to me was a native female, who was also military. We talked about our jobs and she remarked that she was getting out and was going to work for Fontaine, who was national chief at the time.
I asked her what was the biggest challenge facing native people she replied, “Our own.”
Pretty well sums it up.
It’s a shakedown headed by opportunists, pure and simple. There will be another and another despite who is against it and why. God forbid the Indian Act should ever be dismantled. Whatever would the aboriginal industry do?
Shame on all of Them…….

This is what many of us have been saying for years, the Indians biggest problem is their own politicians, who desperately want to maintain the status quo.
With extremist lunatics like Nepinak and Palmater in charge, the AFN will take ten steps backward, but the government will be forced to hand over more money.
For the Indian chiefs/dictators,that’s all it’s ever been about.
Just read Glavin’s article in full. Layer after layer of detailed information, most of which I wasn’t aware, and I’m positive 99% of Canadians knew nothing of.
Shame on all of the obstructionists for deliberately going out of their way to prevent the poorest Aboriginal people in Canada from having a decent state of life. And what a shame that all of these obstructionists will sleep well tonight, in warm beds, without event the tiniest tinge of conscience troubling them. If that’s not some shade of evil, it’s at the very least sociopathic.
I’m still trying to work out why I owe them a nickel of my taxes more than the basic original treaty settlements.
After “mismanaging” billions of my Nations additional charity to them, they are holding my nation hostage under the threat of violence and economic terrorism if we don’t give them more money to “mismanage”.
Our Costs verses Rewards suggest we take up their threats and go back to a “hot war” to settle it once and for all.
Do a forensic audit on those bands.. See what hangs over the chiefs heads, then drop it!
If our police chiefs and politicians weren’t such politically correct cowards this nonsense would have been nipped in the bud years ago. It should have been stopped at Oka.
As soon as I heard of “Idle No More” I thought “Idle Ever More.” So it appears I was right, there is such a movement, i.e. the latter.
Glavin’s article confirms what I have suspected
I think the indian industry has been hijacked by hard core leftists (who are not indians) who are using it as a politically correct foil to foment revolution. If white leftists did what they are doing the riot police would shut them down. If they can hide behind the furs and feathers of the indians they can get away with blocking highways and bridges.
Do not trust leftist and do not give an inch. Their goal is the destruction of western civilization.
And, just how has Phil Fontaine helped the situation?
He jets all over the world with Kathleen Mahoney, a feminist lawyer and professor in Alberta, and disses the residential schools which gave him his educational start in life. How would Phil Fontaine ever have become a lawyer — a member of the Canadian establishment and a recipient of the Order of Canada — from the poverty on his Manitoba reserve if it hadn’t been for residential schools and the majority of teachers who lived sacrificial lives to teach Natives and are now being tarred and feathered for the sins of a few?
Double standards abound.

And, Robert, might I add, shame on the Toronto-based insurgency, er, sorry, “national” media, for failing to report any of this for what it actually is and for propagandizing on behalf of the minority view among the FN leadership.
Quite apart from the disgust and contempt that the majority population holds toward the media Axis of Evil’s general insurrection against the duly-elected Conservative government (and its use of any and all “controversies” to further its object), the majority FN population ought to be pretty upset as well with how they are being used in this farce.
Despite the focus on Ms. Spence (the media’s desperation is clearly effecting its judgement: could it have picked a sorrier and more unsympathetic character as the face of its narrative?), it’s been becoming increasingly clear for some time (say since just before Christmas) that the AFN has been fighting a rear-guard action against some of its own — which divisions spilled into plain view last week over the on-again/off-again meeting fiasco. If I were a member of the FN, I think I’d be pretty upset with the media attempting to foment, for no purpose of any value to my people, a rebellion within our ranks.
Sort of reminds me of Al Qeada in Iraq — even the Sunnis came in time to understand that this outfit was not their friend.
Historically the various Indian tribes fought each other and in some cases wiped out entire tribes. At this point they’re really fighting amongst themselves between power struggles and making demands on the governments for money, money, money and more of it from the tax paying Canadians to which they contribute nothing.
Wonder if they ever consider the possibility they would not have survived at all had it not been for the white man’s interventions?
Terry Glavin (http://transmontanus.blogspot.ca/) is going in my blogroll RIGHT NOW.
The question I’ve always had is this.
Let’s just say, for argument, that these native “activists” get everything they ask for. They get all their “rights”, all their land claims, all their respect, all their payments, everything — the whole shooting match.
Now it’s six thirty in the morning the following day and the alarm clock goes off (assuming these dead beats even have an alarm clock). What are these natives going to do? Are they going to go to work? Are they going to start studying financial management? Are they going to get an MBA? If they’re going to take a vacation, what will they do when they get back from vacation? Are they going to send their kids to trade school to learn welding? What exactly? Or are they going to sit on their collective @rs# moaning and groaning, complaining of being unfulfilled in their lives? If they are going to do anything useful with themselves, leading to self-respect and a sense of accomplishment, what prevents them from doing it right now?
Never had a satisfactory answer.
minuteman, you nail it. This is exactly what is going and this insurrection in AFN had been in the works for over a year. Palmater and Mulcair’s more radical leftist friends are up to their eyeballs in this civil war against the AFN and making use of useful idiots to do their dirty work.
The ultimate aim of these people is the collapse of the government in Canada.
And as David Southam suggests, the MSM is complicit in this.
It is amazing to see just how strong the various leftist/enviro groups with the aid of US foundations feel to the extent that they are actively trying to overthrow Canada’s government.
“I’m still trying to work out why I owe them a nickel of my taxes more than the basic original treaty settlements.”
It’s 2013. I want to know why we should be giving them ANYTHING.
“If our police chiefs and politicians weren’t such politically correct cowards this nonsense would have been nipped in the bud years ago. It should have been stopped at Oka.”
Right to a point, peterj. The politicians (police chiefs are the same thing) are just a symptom of the real problem.
The real problem is the 90 percent of the public that sits on its arse and thinks that the politicians will take care of things without any direction or input.
Most of them are not even aware that there have been blockades – and the rest have only a vague idea that somthing is going on – but have no idea about the issues and certainly have no opinion about the matters.
These same people are playing the slots in the Indian Casinos, filling up with Indian gasoline, and buying Indian smokes.
If Canadians had any guts, they’d have decided on their own to boycott all this stuff. Checkmate, Porkahantas.
DRD,i couldn’t have said it better myself.!!!! There are alot of good hardworking natives out there too but these lazy, useless pieces of crap are making them all look bad.The government and police better grow some balls and put and end to this B.S before it gets out of hand.People are getting fed up and it’s going to get ugly.!!!
The Papaschase band was out protesting on the highway into Edmonton yesterday. The band was screaming about treaty rights. They gave up their treaty rights at their own request. Unfortunately, about 130 years ago, the band, who were largely Metis like Papaschase himself, decided they liked cash better than land and sold their reserve. Those that chose to live on a reserve had their money paid to other reserves, mainly the Enoch band to be settled. I am sure that the protesters were mainly Enoch band members, masquerading as Papaschase members. They were handed their asses by the Supreme Court many years ago for living up to the term “Indian Givers”. The majority of the former band would have melted into white society while the members at Enoch would have maintained their Chev/Ford/Labatts/Molsons pseudo-culture.
This whole bloody mess has me plenty angry. On one hand you have what..lets be nice and say 50% of the reserves cannot account for 1/2 of the money annually sent to them (5Billion). I want to see where that went. Don’t you.?? All the while those that said money is for are in dire need.
Secondly. We have hundreds of agitators (useful idiots IMO), blockading roads and railings – the so called Idle No More group engaged in economic terrorism IMO.
I think what we are seeing here is a concerted effort to dissolve/destroy the AFN, keep the Indian Act with all its appendages INTACT so that the money continues to flow and accountability continues to be non existent.
I also think that Palmater, Nepinak and their buddies are 100% behind this funded by a who’s who of dissafected (Including the NDP), in Canada as well as some shit disturbing foundations in the US.
“Toronto based Insurgency” – I love it! That’s even one better than “The Media Party”, David!
As long as the money keeps flowing into the bands, the NDP and especially the Librano$, who desperately need grassroots funding because they hardly have any, keep getting generous donations from the likes of Teepee Teri. If the new Act is passed, what few donations they do get, especially the Librano$, will be dramatically fewer.
No wonder the Left-of-centre parties in Canada, aided and abetted by their cheerleaders and lapdogs in the MSM, don’t want to see this change in the status quo. They have no regard for the Natives who live in squalor on the reservations. They’re interested only in courting the top 1% who live high off the hog and control the purse strings of billion$ every year.
It’s outrageous that Canada’s media is in cahoots with this cabal. They’re lower than a snake’s belly and have no credibility because they’re not doing their jobs; they’re in the bag for the Left. ‘No better than Pravda.
Just as it is long past time to stop wasting money and energy on the native scams …. it is time to stop wasting oxygen and energy talking about it.
Spare the electrons …. it all comes around in a circle no matter what.
Great piece from Glavin that needs much much more exposure. Maybe you could repost it with a series of excerpts? Whatever the maximum legal amount of excerpting will allow :^)
Looked at that Ishkonigan link from batb and whaddaya know — one of the “people of Ishkonigan” listed after Fontaine and his son is Michael freaking Bryant, the same guy who eliminated the problem of a drunk Metis bicyclist clinging to his car door by sideswiping some parking meters! Now that ended his elected political career which is absolutely providential, but an unemployed hypocrite pol has to work somewhere and Michael’s now in the Indian Industry.Great piece from Glavin that needs much much more exposure.
