    1. Personally, I think Ezra is barking up the wrong tree here. In Canada, under the Constitution Act, 1867 (Section 92), provinces have exclusive jurisdiction over local government. A county only possesses the powers explicitly granted to it by provincial legislation.

And, just like every single other objection levied by those against a secession, it would be tied up in the courts for decades. In this particular scenario, the Constitution Act would guarantee a loss for those championing a secession.

The ONLY way Alberta secedes in any way is if you remove the current Premier and replace her with someone that has the “see yah, wouldn’t want to be yah” attitude, because Alberta will lose every court case at the Supreme Court level, and the Clarity Act is written purposely to be vague and trigger just such a situation.

      1. I think it’s worth asking what sort of majority is required of Edmonton in order to separate from AB, though it is moot, will it be a clear majority, a slim majority, an overwhelming majority, or simply 50% +1, which the current PM of Brookfield says isn’t sufficient?

and the campaign against AB from the Laurentians hasn’t even warmed up yet.

    2. I would say, if we can entirely seal off the area with barbed wire so that we can watch you starve, then of course you can declare the area seceded! Canada can organize a federated Gulagia and keep them all supplied by drone. Or not, not my lookout.

  1. While true that municipalities in the province are constructs and domain of the province, a guy can dream, right? BTW, almost the entirety of Edmonton’s major industries are in Leduc, Strathcona, Sturgeon, and Parkland counties. Edmonton can keep all the BS and stay part of Canada. They could be like the reservations, failing societies surrounded by success.

  2. given that Liberals are communists, and given that west berlin was an enclave within communist east germany, clearly communists and Liberals will accept such an arrangement, especially if it works in their benefit and kept the FORMER provincial capital of the FORMER province within the ‘fold’.
there ya go AB, you just knocked one more excuse flat on its ass.
