The Carbon Racket

A real conservative would have pointed out the absurdity of essentially having to pay protection money to get a pipeline built. It’s a dead loss for every Canadian, not a victory.

At least, that’s how much Alberta taxpayers could be asked to pay in order to prop up Smith’s new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Ottawa that, among other things, promises to ratchet up carbon taxes to $130 per tonne by 2040. Under Friday’s agreement, Alberta and the feds promised to spend up to $1.2 billion toward that end, splitting the cost equally between both parties.

  1. It’s nothing but theater. They all know their roles and lines.

And thinking people who are honest with themselves already know the outcome.

  2. I oppose everything about this deal, and think separation from tier 2 Canada is the best way forward for the west, for AB and Sask.
It’s protection money, for the #Libranos, and exactly as “Libranos” implies as a take from The Sopranos.
I realize that Premier Smith in AB is in a difficult position, it’s either not be permitted to expand oil exports from AB, pay the protection money to the #Libranos, or make a solid move on separation from Canada, there doesn’t appear to be a way between those 3.
Someone should point out to the provincial gov’t the cost of paying protection money to scoundrels.

  3. Premier Smith has said that there will be a referendum question dealing with Alberta becoming separate from Canada.
Maybe enough vote for separation, maybe not.
If yes to separation, then questions of carbon taxes or any other taxes sent to Ottawa become moot.

If I were the Premier, every penny that may be spent on carbon taxes would instead be diverted to publicly advertising the truth about CO2 and exposing it for the scam that it is.

    1. maybe smith is taking a chance at ‘distracting’ or diverting att’n to the referendum. ‘defusing’ the situation and them punch ottawa right in the face with a successful referendum.
dont give up AB, TAKE THE MOMENTUM DO IT, DONT LET UP. DO SCENARIO ANALYSES UP THE WAZOO

  4. She flew to Arizona to get a covid vaccine. One of the adverse effects of covid vaccination is that the recipient makes illogical or lunatic decisions.

  5. Alberta and the Feds splitting the money (payments) equally. NO they are not splitting it equally, The Alberta taxpayer is paying the entire amount. Each Alberta taxpayer contributes way more than the average “Canadian”. You know the difference in what Alberta Taxpayers send to Ottawa and what Alberta gets back? Most Albertans call this equalization payments.

    1. “Alberta and the Feds splitting the money (payments) equally.”

Good point. Federal money is Alberta money.
Maybe Alberta should print it’s own money like autonomous states do.

  6. Lets play with numbers. A pipeline would deliver to dockside say a million barrels a day for sale at world prices. Say $75-$80 a barrel but you guess prices in 5-10 years. Lets assume taxes are 25%. Over a year that pipeline delivers about $7B to the treasuries. $1.2B is about 2 months of taxes. This ignores payrolls and spinoff business.
Just get the pipeline built and pay the Liberal kickbacks until this government is thrown out and this blackmail goes into the garbage.
Build (privately) the pipelines now and the revenues will outlast the Liberals.
I would welcome any corrections to my assumptions.

  7. Here’s my take on this: Smith knows that the new conventional wisdom says carbon taxes are a fools errand. She gave Carney an opening to repudiate them. He chose not to. Ergo, Albertans can make up their minds from that.
Just a WAG, for sure. But it’s a semi-educated WAG nonetheless.

  8. If I were Trump I would say I don’t want Canada anymore, America already has a great ice hockey team but I do want Alberta as the 51st State. Trump could offer every Alberta resident of 3 years or more (arbitrary timeline) $50,000 in US Dollar cash (arbitary dollar amount) and a percent of the oil royalties in perpetuity should they choose to become a US state. Projected royalties would be roughly $3,000 per capita. Alaska has a royalty program like this already.

Be fun to see Carney’s counter proposal.

    1. l think it would turn Carnage into a stuttering slobbering zombie in the face of some real authority and
‘no nonsense’ approach. he better have some adult diapers on could be embarrassing.
or maybe like biden he would be the only one to not notice.
hey liberals, see what its like to get your guy bad mouthed and insulted?
sry SDA l just spent some time on the National Post web site. jeezuz there are some seriously
      ingrained liberals there.

  9. The tax is real, the pipeline is not.

Laugheed never recovered from having his picture taken with Trudeau, smith may not either unless her next actions demonstrate that she knows carney is lying.

  10. Do I understand this correctly. Our Premier agreed to a scheme that has Alberta and Ottawa paying half the pipeline cost $1.2B

    So Ottawa’s share is $.6B
    Alberta share is also $.6B
Except Ottawa’s share also has contributions by Alberta’s 1M+ employed workers paying Federal Tax. Not easy to find the $dollar amount for citizens only. However it is published that Alberta already contributes billions more to Ottawa than it received in return.

Only good thing I see in this MOU is – a pipeline – hopefully.
And the increase in carbon tax is so far out a future government may be convinced to change the amount.

Has anyone noticed where carbon producing industries – vehicles, airplanes, snowmobiles etc, in Eastern Canada have a carbon tax applied to their products, which also produce carbon?

  11. AB needs to ‘get the ball rolling’ like cleaving off its own seniors pension plan like ye olde kaybeck has.
*whatever they did* to arrange that just COPY the process. that wd be a great benchmark. get LOTS
of stuff ‘at the gate’ or ‘fait accompli’ status. keep at it ya numbFks ottawa is NOT going to make it easy or quick but IF AB hives off what a delightful wake up call for the zombie liberal voters eh?
uhuh uhuh uhuh eeeeewwwww mumsy wumsy why dey do dat mumsy wumsy
