Joke’s On Us

@FoodProfessor

It’s April 1.

The industrial carbon tax is rising to $110 per tonne today—120% higher than when we last faced a major geopolitical energy shock during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Also today, regular MPs in Ottawa get an ‘automatic’ $8,800 raise. Cabinet ministers get a $13,300 raise and Carney gets a $17,500 raise.

In related developments…

  1. Alberta separation referendum folks are saying they have the signatures required to force the vote. I don’t know how they know that as final word will be from Elections Alberta officials 21 days after the end of the signing period.

However, every day the #Libranos federal gov’t continues to ruin our lives is semi-welcome, I’ve met so many people in these past few months just wanting to get on with this process and everyday I’m more optimistic for our future.
The next few months will be a challenge for people who like to eat or buy gasoline/diesel fuel and go places, do things, keep the water and gas connected in their houses …

Not all of us will be taking a $8800 raise this month, but not all of us are fluently French speakers…
Need a new water heater? call me! etc…

    1. I don’t share your optimism, but I do hope it comes to pass and ASAP.
A new path and freedom for the intrepid.

And Alberta’s adventure may inspire K-bec to actually do the same, equalization payments notwithstanding.
Then I can say Bon Voyage, tabernac!

    2. May I provide a “glass half full” point of view?

The subject of a referendum nor the results are as important as the fact that there is one.
Just having one will cause great anxiety to all the people that hate flyover country.
As if to say, “how dare those heathens have the temerity to think they have a choice”.

        1. We cannot forget, that’s why this website exists, with millions of comments;
the mere fact that some Canadians finally have the self-awareness to say ‘no’ is contagious, liberating,
and indicates the Lefts’ long march is not sufficient to achieved their goals.

Desperate is the Liberal Party of Canada doubling down,
          looking to beige-ing for direction,
          increasing taxes on the poor.

… “for it is a characteristic of wisdom, not to do desperate things”
          Thoreau

          1. Yep
And then they had a protest on Parliament Hill.
The authorities at that time also said “how dare they”.
When the smoke cleared, the court said that, yes indeed the government had violated the rights of the citizens.
They are not taking it well, even now attempting to petition the same court to overturn their decision. My gut tells me the appeal will fail, not on a legal argument, but because one bunch of elites have the temerity to question the judgement of another group of elites that think they are above them.
            But i digress.
The only tool the federal government has in its tool box is the one they use to contest Quebec separatists.
And that doesn’t do well when the argument is where did Ottawa get the money from.

          2. As for the tools the Federal government may use ,I believe the present challenge before the Supreme Court may be pivotal. As not only the Provinces but also the Federal government can use the “not withstanding” clause , I fully expect the Feds will use it. The question will be ,can it be used preemptively as the Quebec government has attempted ,or will it be after a positive succession vote. Of course the negative misinformation will be relentless and given the present pending legislation , severe legal repercussions for criticism can be expected.

    3. I saw this article yesterday. It is significant that 177k signatures have been verified on the referendum petitions. Also, article claimed additional petitions are coming in with as yet unverified signatures. Leftists challenge the signatures on political referendum petitions in the US, always allege fraud. It’s part of the lawfare playbook
      …threshold of 177,000 verified signatures…”

    4. While I am happy that the lower bar has been achieved I view anything less than 500,000 to be a hollow victory. I was hoping that we could surpass Fabio’s petition by a significant margin. Our moral and intellectual betters will be given more fodder to dismiss a genuine effort for freedom, equality and opportunity as a flash in the pan by a small, disgruntled rabble

On the other hand. We know that there are those that fear signing the petition for fear of reprisal (Oh Nathan Hale, where art thou now?) There have also been people that have been turned away because they have a box number. How many that is I don’t know. Those people may then come out to vote in October in sufficient numbers.

Every day brings a fresh reminder that Soviet Canuckistan is finished. Every day must bring new efforts to convince our fellow Albertans they will be better off in the life boat than on the sinking garbage scow.

      1. “While I am happy that the lower bar has been achieved I view anything less than 500,000 to be a hollow victory. I was hoping that we could surpass Fabio’s petition by a significant margin.”

There is a huge difference between signing a petition and casting an anonymous vote in a referendum.
The Federal government will have a list of names when this is all over.

“We hang together or we hang separately” ~Benjamin Franklin

A number of Federalists have already publicly accused those who want a referendum as treasonous.

    5. So far as I understand it, they have built in a buffer that a certain amount will be rejected to to improperly filled out forms – say 20% (my guess). So that would assume they then have at least 221,000 signatures.

This does not seem outlandish based on response by public and the number of pop up signing locations around the province. Goal will be to beat Tommy the commies fake petition results

      1. Ward, Very little chance of improperly filled out forms. The canvassers fill out the one page form with your proof of residence(911 address, legal land description) in AB right on the table in front of them. You are then asked to verify/check the info.
You are advised that the forms are then checked again by other canvassers in another location. You will be contacted by phone if any discrepancies or errors are found. A friend who is a canvasser said addresses and names are checked against those already in the system(signed up), to prevent duplicate signees.

  2. Also, the escalator tax on beer and wine goes up today – but its been ‘capped’ so it only rises by 2%.

If you’re a Liberal voter, today’s the day you should hang yourself, jump off a building, step in front of a bus or train or go for a one-way swim.
    Yeah, sure, I’m just joking…

  3. Bahhhh! The PM’s office will simply blame Trump for your high energy costs. Elbows UP, comrades! … and hands in your wallets.

  4. I saw diesel for $2.39/L yesterday. Can’t imagine what it’s going to be today.

You think butter is expensive in the store now? Wait a couple weeks.

Vive le Alberta libre! Because that is probably the -only- thing that will force these elbows-up imbeciles to pull their heads out and look around at the smoking wreckage of a formerly great country.

  5. So are they imputing carbon tax on imports or are they just taxing Canadians to encourage imports to benefit foreigners?

    1. You’ll still pay for some of it, if you don’t live in the port, but yes, they complain about “Carbon tax leakage” where products being exported are subjected to it, but products being imported aren’t subject to it.

And then you’ll see them bleating about “competitiveness” without understanding that all the hidden taxes are a boot on the neck of exporters.

  6. I wonder when the Elbozos will wake up to the realization that their new emperor has no clothes.

    1. Someone that chants and does the chicken dance thingy waking up? Your first clue it will never happen? They’re chanting and doing the dance.

      1. Well, there is a distinction to be made between those that have realized the emperor has no clothes and those that will admit to it because they don’t want to admit they were suckered.

    2. The Children’s PM
I’m sure he has a pinto vest and a cowboy hat all picked out for Stampede, just like Woody from Toy Story.

  7. As much as I wish I were wrong on this, I sense that the dominant Marxist culture of Alberta’s cities will keep the referendum (independence) vote below 50% and likely below 40%. Watch for fed-funded “NGOs” popping up to scare the Eloi with hysteria within days of an announcement by Smith that the referendum is a go. They’ll claim that Trump is behind it, scare the boomers that they will lose their pensions, the climate will burn up, cats will mate with dogs, you name it. Indigenous nobility will deploy more lawfare with new cash from the feds. Muslims will toe the line, as will the NDP and their public sector and green loons.

    1. Something to consider
The current model of the Canadian government is based on the one the US rejected in 1776.
Comparing the two countries, which one has the advantage economically, militarily and socially?
Better question, which country uses comparisons to the other when gauging how well they are (or are not) doing?

      For example
When have you ever heard anyone refer to a US city as say Toronto South?

Oh and I believe it’s not cats mating with dogs, it’s sewer rats mating with alley cats

      1. “Comparing the two countries…”

You can’t compare the two countries. The geography is utterly different. Compare Canada to Alaska, that’s more like it.

  8. FILTHY LIBERALS
Buddy, that’s too much work for FILTHY LIBERALS. THEY INVENTED MAIM- Medical Assistance in MURDER.

  9. regarding the carbum (get it lol!) tax, er, make that TAXTAXTAXTAX and the AB connexion, one of 2 things coming out of this process, either
-continuing the pickpocket bankfraud stickup approach TROC engages in AB * allows * it, or
-it gets to the ‘nothing to lose’ point and AB hives off finally.

just how bad, that remains to see. maybe TROC holds off that last farthing and AB continually allows the theft
if THAT is the case here it is AB: you DESERVE IT FULL WELL STAY IMPOVERISHED AND BULLIED

  10. Perhaps I am well out of my depth here, but as I see it.. well, unfortunately, I fear that the average Albertan citizen doesn’t appreciate the.. ‘gravity’ of the situation they are now in. Whether Alberta chooses to remain steadfastly independent, or applies to join the U.S. is a question they likely, sadly, will get to answer never get to answer, because I fear that they will avoid the *actual* question at their own peril, perhaps out of some misguided sense of patriotism, for lack of a more.. apt. .word, or a rational fear of the unknown. The problem, which I believe the average Albertan has here is, they aren’t going to answer the real question, at all. Being far removed from expert on Alberta, I can only posit on what I have observed.. The actual question for Albertans is rather straight forward. Do you vote for what will likely be a difficult transition to an ‘independent’ nation, and accept the pain that it will most certainly involve, for the prospect of either a brighter future, or possibly a disastrous fall? Or, do you remain, as an ‘unreliable asset’ to Ottawa, to eventually be ‘dealt with’.. decisively..? This.. is the actual question.. the actual choice. Everything else is a distraction.. Understand that, in all likelihood, Alberta will be.. ‘punished’.. if they chooses to remain.. they have now taken a shot at the king, so they had better not miss.. It will be only a matter of time before Ottawa brings out the knives they sharpened on the Vancouver whetstone, with the blessing of your federal judges, to carve up a humbled and humiliated Alberta. They will slice away at their mining territories, their oilfields, public lands, and locations that include strategic minerals, or border national defense sites, then the ranches and suburban developments, and the lands that pipelines cross will follow, Ottawa and the liberals in Alberta will have the unmitigated gall to label it ‘stolen land’ as they gleefully transfer Albertan land (their children’s birthright) to the the shadowy ‘first nation’ extortion cabal (a wholly owned subsidiary of C.H.ina Co. LTD), at the behest of their Chinese paymasters. The Chinese will lease and fleece their newly acquired land, thanks to their ‘first nations’ proxies, bypassing Albertans entirely, with the blessings of Ottawa, and their black-robed legal shills, leaving Alberta depleted, impoverished and broken, while the smug and condescending Laurentian syndicate sip brandy and smile, their pockets swollen with Chinese stipends and kick-backs, with their thirst for crushing the unwashed western upstarts who dared rise above their station, momentarily sated. Ottawa won’t hesitate to hand over Alberta’s land to their Chinese masters, all while gaslighting and fearmongering Alberta about how Trump will ‘take it from them’ if they dare choose independence.. peak hypocrisy.. the real question is, will they allow that? Please, answer the real question, Alberta.. you’ll only get one chance at it..

    1. big . . . . . . . fat . . . . . . . . BINGO.
you have more than adequately and convincingly so expanded on my post tq.
you have outdone yourself. this gets post of the week award considering the subject matter.

      to consider possibility of success?
look at kaybeck, in many ways ALREADY acting like an independent nation.
      except for the transfer payments.
but, AHAH. *where are the transfer payments coming from?
      AB.
which post separation KEEPS ALL OF IT.
ergo, a financial ‘buffer’ to gret over the transition period.
and, MAJOR ppoint scrub the idea of ‘joining’ the USA, that notion will just be used AGAINST change

    2. Well BC is in a much different legal quagmire given there are no treaties. Resources belong to the province and it would be an act of war to take them. It would be the end of Canada.
