A funny thing happened when the subsidies dried up.

Data from S&P Global Mobility shared by Auto News show that 59,802 new EVs were registered in January, a massive 41 percent drop from a year earlier. Out of nearly 1.2 million vehicles registered that month, that leaves fully electric models with just a 5.1 percent share of the market, down from 8.3 percent a year earlier.

  1. Good news. Now when do we taxpayers get our money back for the hundreds of billions used to subsidize all these purchases, the battery plants, the charging stations, the damage to roads from their weight, etc etc etc. Should I not hold my breath?

    I have to say, a lot of these EVs are pretty cool looking from a purely aesthetic perspective (AUDI Q8 E-TRON as an example). I don’t know why these car designers can’t put the same energy into designing cooler looking conventional automobiles.

    1. As the cost of a new vehicle continues to approach the cost of a residence, the features become increasingly meaningless.

    1. They’re waiting until Blubber Doug’s new nuke plants are online, which will be (not in my lifetime)….

      I thought Carney said subsidies were coming back?? I guess a stretch goal, as he is so busy with his other nation building projects and travel abroad..

  3. Subsidized like windy mills and sun panels – a giant global scam to steal taxpayer money and give it to Commercial Grifters.
    Past and present proponents within governments from around the world should be demonetized and imprisoned.

    The solid state batteries that are coming are a lot more impressive.
    700-1000 mile range, charge faster, less fire potential, work in the cold and may outlast the car itself.

    1. L- How many E.V. Volvos, now made in China, have been sold in Sweden, as compared to gas engined ones? Selling their automobile branch to China may not have been the best idea for the brand long term…

    1. You’ve got to admire Elon with his many accomplishments across multiple business enterprises over the years, and of course him single handedly saving on-line free speech. The truck though is indeed a major big swing and a miss. Ugly as hell.
