    I would suggest that most Americans are happy that Iran is finally being dealt with, and are confident Trump knows what he is doing, even if he doesn’t reveal his plans to The Associated Press.

    1. Heinlein had us in the crazy years about now, with the right wing religious dictatorship in about 2030. That was written in perhaps the 50’s

    2. 1970 and my freshman HS self wouldn’t have believed it.

      My Swedish native Great Grandmother who passed away in 1968 at the age of 93 used to marvel at what she’d seen in her lifetime … the Industrial Revolution, the automobile, telephone, radio, television, the atomic bomb, polio cured along with myriad other diseases, space flight (just missed the moon landing), satellites, the Hoover Dam … so very many inventions and innovations. Her life gradually got better and better and better.

      In my lifetime I’ve watched the termites eat it all away. Wrecking nearly everything she watched being built … and replacing it with a virtual world where the only safe place is in your bedroom, hiding under your bed … unless your bedroom is at the front of the house where drive-by bullets can penetrate the drywall. It’s a really sad contrast between Yerda and me … things SHOULD HAVE gotten wayyyy better than Yerda’s lifetime … but it hasn’t. We’re regressing into an era of lawlessness, low-trust, and savagery

      1. All productivity increases since 1970 have been eaten up by taxes, regulation, cheap labour immigration, and God knows what. People have never been as well off as 1970. One income households virtually all owned houses and bought a new car every few years. They sent their kids to university without massive debt. There were no homeless.

      2. And nowhere is the contrast so stark as in California.My apologies that you had to witness it all Kenji. My impression of California was shaped as a wee lad by two movies popular at the time – Earthquake and The Bad News Bears. The skies were devoid of any clouds in every scene, the palm trees were beautiful, the baseball diamonds were immaculately manicured (especially when compared to the crappy fields I played on), and the mountains in the background looked spectacular. I remember thinking the place look like paradise, especially when compared to the s-hole I lived in (New Jersey).

          I lived in California in the early 60s. To a young grade schooler it seemed like paradise.
