Gradually, The Suddenly

Statistics Canada says

… the economy capped off a volatile year with a contraction in the final quarter of 2025.

The agency said Friday that real gross domestic product declined 0.6 per cent on an annualized basis in the fourth quarter, falling short of expectations from the Bank of Canada and most economists for flat growth. Real GDP per capita was unchanged in the fourth quarter.

  1. Wow who would have thought such a mature well spoken rich put together “sane” business man , could be so lack luster?
You’d almost think doing nothing was on purpose.

  2. The fact that despite all the federal and provincial spending we have negative GDP growth says a lot about how fast private sector spending and borrowing must be contracting. This is the kind of Canadian “exceptionalism” that no one wants to acknowledge.

    1. Despite? Because of big government, owing to their transactions of decline, hostility to oil & gas and abysmal capital formation. As Milton Freidman pointed out, government causes inflation toying with the money supply.

  3. Real GDP per capita was unchanged in the fourth quarter.

So the population declined by an annualized 0.6% in the quarter?

    40 million x 0.006 / 4 = 60,000 people

    MAID kicking into next gear?

  4. Interviewer: “what’s your thoughts on the negative growth in our 4th quarter?”

Canadian: “Huh? Oh yeah, like, that overtime period was like, sooooo sad, eh?”

        1. Re. Brain barriers.
          Rural Manitoba good. Wab town?
Then it’s ok heading west till the lower mainland, BC.
I live in the bc interior. Anywhere east of Langley has functionality.

        2. The brain barrier starts at the rural urban divide. And that holds true whether it’s BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, or Ontario.

It doesn’t apply to the others.

          1. Jamie,
            Thanks for elucidating my point.
I also laughed on which provinces you excluded.
I’m sure PP would agree with us.

  5. Okay so who is Greg Brady, besides one of the kids from The Brady Bunch, and what is his source?

  6. Canadian de carbonization de industrialization SUCCESS! Way to go Canada! Offshore all your needs to the ChiComs!

  7. Given that all of those numbers are on an annualized basis, none of these countries, including the US, had strong economic growth.

    1. Last is last, no matter how you parse it.

It’s two more points, so instead of a standard of living in the US 40% higher than in Canada, it’s now 42% higher.

          1. Yes, yes I know. When you can’t be bothered to rebut the point, attack the source. Just plain lazy.

          2. Jim Stanford?
            The CBC of economists?
He’s so left he walks in circles.
            Are you new?
            An illegal immigrant?
            A Canadian journalist?
            A Liberal MP?
            Stupid?

        1. It is better than most, and I’m sorry policy options is not a source I would rely on. Jim Stanford is a union economist, bigger government is his solution to everything. I have two sisters and a daughter now living in the US, that is a great way to tell how a country is doing. All are raised Canadian, educated in Canada, and two worked until age 30 in Canada. Will any of them come back? Hard no. My youngest daughter, BN RN is leaving for the US at the end of her contract. Florida will pay her $40,000 more, tax her less, and the community she is heading to has three bedroom homes with (gasp) yards available for $295,000.
That’s how the country is doing.

    2. Let us turn to the wise words of one Mr. Cookie Monster;

One of these things is not like the other
One of these things doesn’t belong
Can you tell which thing is not like the other
By the time you finish our song

      Hint: it’s the minus sign

      1. The bottom six numbers are essentally equilivalent. It’s not unusual for a single quarter GDP growth to be later revised by values greater than the numbers shown.

        1. “The bottom six numbers are essentally equilivalent. It’s not unusual for a single quarter GDP growth to be later revised by values greater than the numbers shown.”

          Or lesser, right?

It’s so much fun to watch you flailing about… đŸ™‚

    3. Canada is dead last, over the past 10 years, in GDP for all G20 countries.
      It’s not just a trend, it’s a fixture now.
      Liberal policies.
And, HERE you are. Playing COPIUM for your Liberal masters, by deflecting, sidestepping, and Whataboutism.
      You smell vaccinated.

      1. Actually, I’m making a point which you are too economically illiterate to understand.

Namely this, that the last quarter sucked for everyone. US GDP growth was slow. European growth was statistically zero when you consider the uncertainty in these numbers.

        That’s the real story here.

        1. “That’s the real story here.”

No, the real story here is that Canada is AT THE BOTTOM of the list. As usual.

A fact that you would be aware of except for your debilitating case of TDS.

  8. I’m curious. Our economy is shrinking and we dilute it with millions of immigrants from the shithole world each year. What does the future hold for us?

  9. They’re still shilling this line too…

“StatCan said real GDP rose 1.7 per cent in 2025 overall, cooling from two per cent growth in each of the previous two years and marking the slowest pace of annual growth since 2016, outside the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The real number is 0.2% GDP growth for 2025. Check for yourself…

  10. “Stats Canada says”..
    They would,wouldn’t they..
Stats Can will say whatever their masters decree.
For they are government ,it is a crime punishable by fines and jail time to lie to Stats Canada, but they get a free pass to lie to the tax payer.
    As their “statistics” repeatedly show.

This is another agency that should be closed down, the building burned and the earth salted where they once stood.

Even if Statistics Canada was an impartial, ethical and ruthlessly honest bureaucracy, there is no case for their existence.
Just look at the fools and bandits they “report to”.
Stats Can could produce the most accurate, concise annual report of “Life in Canada” and it will never do any good.

The thieves and liars who front for the mob of takers of can Ahh Duh are incapable of processing said information.
And because government is incapable of safely keeping confidential information, providing any information to such agencies is self abuse.

  11. I am delighted with these numbers. It shows Canada on an unsustainable path. The disease and the cure are painful but necessary. Canada as a nation needs to cease existence. It serves no-one except low-iq unionized flunkies and communist / socialists.
