Just in time for pay for Quebec’s shit again;
Taxpayers will be shocked to learn that nearly $30 billion is set to be paid out in federal equalization transfers for 2026-27, with Quebec poised to grab almost half of the massive payment.
Elections Alberta has approved the citizen initiative petition on Alberta independence. (Sorry, link fixed)

Is that the right link for independence? For me it brings up an X link about the battleships.
Quebec…dit…
Merci pour plus d’argant encore, vous anglais sookairs!
See, I aced my francais immersion, nest pas?
Tabersnatch!
2026 in AB is going to be lit.
For folks outside of AB, we now have paper ballots only, as the gov’t here banned electronic vote tabulation last year, and is allowing only in person voting unless your reason is one of the very few outlined below at the link.
There is the possibility of having another 4-5 referenda in 2026, to replace the RCMP and to vote on an AB pension fund instead of the Canadian pension fund which appears to soon be raided by the #Libranos as they want the money in the general fund. Our heros at the SCOC have already decided the pension fund is merely a form of tax so they can do whatever they want with those funds, go to the casino or whatever….
The additional referenda will clearly be moot if/when the separation referendum is successful. As well, there is a plan if the federal gov’t #Libranos choose to not negotiate the terms of our separation. I’m not so secretly pleased that it is the #Libranos in gov’t and not the Conservatives, who will forever be blamed for the demise of Canada.

Hopefully Moe follows suit so we don’t have to move to Alberta again like in the 80s.
And it gets even worse…..on top of getting screwed on equalization, Alberta gets the lowest per capita in terms of transfer payments as well.
AB voted in a referendum to renegotiate the terms of the equalization plan, and it passed I think with about 61%. This was taken / delivered to the federal gov’t, and there wasn’t a response, ever.
The #Libranos completely ignored it. No response.
See the top row in yellow at this link:
https://officialresults.elections.ab.ca/orResultsReferendum2021.cfm?EventId=68RQ1&QUESTIONNO=1
The won’t ignore this vote as there is provision to declare independence (a declaration) if the parties don’t negotiate in good faith. Knowing how the federal imbeciles negotiate with the USA for tariffs and such, I expect the #Libranos will ignore it right up to the day prior to a declaration. They’re lunatics…
“Equalization” ? So then … a transfer of wealth. Taking from the productive and giving to the shiftless. “Equalization” sounds so technical … pristine …and whatnot
The unmitigated gall of Ottawa trying to bribe Alberta (like Quebec), but with some portion of their own money (as a rebate) to stay Canadian would a pie in the face, slap-stick comedic genius troll.. I wouldn’t put it past them, and I absolutely dare them to try it..
Prediction: The most overused term that will be coming out of Ottawa in 2026 will be “The Clarity Act.” And, I don’t think Albertans are going to like how the House of Commons defines “clarity.”
If Alberta wins the referendum, and if the Canadians don’t recognize that and negotiate in good faith, Alberta may issue a declaration of independence or statehood.
When Israel declared statehood, President Harry Truman acting for the USA recognized Israel within minutes and I expect similar here in AB. I expect the gov’t of Canada’s opinions on AB’s declaration to be worthless, but no shots fired.
50% + 1 is the minimum for AB sovereignty … I think that’s the only relevant section of the clarity act, the question chosen is sufficiently clear, if it wasn’t clear, the time to speak up is the same as at marriage ceremonies, “speak now or forever hold your peace” etc…
I understand what you’re saying. And, currently, I think there is a US President who would stand up for Alberta. But, IMO, he’s the only US president in the last 20+ years who would even consider it, much less do it.
The Clarity Act was written to make unilateral Secession impossible. Even if the House of Commons agrees that Albertans have shown by a “clear majority” (which remains undefined), there is another clause requiring the “clear will of the people.” Do you see what they did? They named the Bill the “Clarity Act” and made it vague so as to allow the Federal govt. to define the terms. So, not clarity whatsoever.
Now, suppose by some miracle, the House of Commons agrees that Albertans have shown a clear majority and a clear will to secede. That doesn’t initiate the action. Instead it triggers your federal law requiring a Constitutional Amendment acknowledging Alberta’s new status. So, do you think, with the current make-up of your federal govt, that this has even a chance of happening? They’d drag it out and throw in requirements such as paying a tribute off Albertan resources. They’d require guarantees on continued payment of your equalization. Every Liberal wet dream wish list would be thrown in, in exchange for approving an amendment. IOW, it wouldn’t happen.
Then, Alberta, has a Leader in Smith who has publicly admitted that she doesn’t want to see Alberta Secede. She’s the one who would be negotiating over the Constitutional amendment requirements.
The clarity act, should be clear.
I oppose AB having to wait for any amount of time for tier 2 Canada to amend their constitution to enable AB to separate. If the vote is clearly in favor of separation, we should request a meeting, when the federal gov’t obfuscates on this file, we should declare, and be done with it. I don’t expect Canada to negotiate fairly and think the rest of the world should be aware of how tier 2 Canada operates.
The gov’t of Canada has had negotiations with First Nations for decades, Meech Lake accords began in 1985, finished in 1987, and they had 3 more years to ratify, then failed. Quebec and NFLD because of the power generation payments from Labrador took years, Canada has consistently dragged out free trade negotiations with the USA. Canada has had 121 years to figure out how to deliver fairness to AB and Sask. There’s no indication they wouldn’t drag it out for another 121 years in order to steal equalization / welfare moneys.
and if Canada isn’t willing to send anyone to actually negotiate in good faith, for pension moneys for example, perhaps tier 2 Canada will end up eating their grotesque debt entirely on their own, while AB figures out a way on their own to provide for pensions from within.
I doubt Alberta will be negotiating from a position of weakness.
The response from the federal gov’t from our referendum on equalization was complete silence. That set the standard for “reaching across the aisle”.
It isn’t my intention to direct this in anger at you Orson, but for all my years in Canada, I have no reason to think the federal gov’t has any good intentions towards the west.
I expect treachery, and on the eve of the referendum, the feds will instruct the CF-18’s and other military hardware out of Cold Lake, AB to Manitoba. That’ll be “a tell” as well.
Agreed, re constitutional arguments and legal challenges,
but if negotiations are sought, Alberta controls Eastern Canada’s
(and a significant portion of NY’s) natural gas so let’s start there.
Ottawa’s pathetic insistence on retaining free US benefits forever and ever
is mirrored in their behaviour towards Alberta.
It will not continue, they’ve cooked their golden goose twice over.
Alberta just has to declare, then leave the constitutional arguments and legal challenges behind
with the foreign nation under the boot of the Liberal Party of Canada.
As for Alberta’s portion of any federal debt, 120 years of taxation without representation,
plus destruction of industries farms and families: Alberta gets BC and it still aint even.
A well regulated Militia is necessary to the security of a free State.
L – My goal is to see a new functional, nation-state, a True North, strong and free. One that can inspire true patriot love. A constitutional republic, something with the shared values and culture, our ancestors would recognize. Its ideals would inspire so much true patriotic love and faith in its future; that families would choose to have enough babies to keep it healthy for a very long time.
Carving that out of the current political wilderness, will require men and women of uncommon valour. The pioneers themselves have passed on,, but if you listen carefully in the silence of nature or to the whispering wind You may hear their pioneering spirit, echoing the call to adventure.
For decades I believed Canada could be reformed, but unfortunately, events of the 21st Century indicate otherwise. Though, the success of the “Western Republic of Canada” may very well inspire other parts of this “first, post nation-state” to again, try living freedom under moral law, once again. To be continued…
I concur
Let me provide context how I came to the same conclusion.
The reality is we have a country that was legislated into existence by Westminster to preserve their status quo, and stifle US expansion as the sole power in North America. Mostly because they wanted the American experiment to fail, the experiment being the Constitutional republic as designed by the founders that was based on limited government.
This environment where the old European powers have over the last 250 years been working to bring the colonials to heel has been assisted by the establishment in British North America.
Jump to the present you have the ingrained belief that Canada is entitled to the benefits of a US state without having to sacrifice the blood and treasure of the last two centuries.
All Trump did was pull back the blind and tell the world that if Canada wants US style benefits it’s far easier to just become the 51st.
The other way is much more difficult and painful
Nice to see that the Prairie Peons can still afford to support their parasitic cousins in the East.
I imagine the answer is obvious, but who devised a financial system within government that discourages prodent spending management in (some) provinces?
A separation referendum won’t pass. Not even close. This failure will be used as a pretext to shut down any separation speech/activity for a generation. It’s what they did to Kweebeck, they will do it to us.
13.9 is greater than half of 27.2.
Where may we sign the petition?
Maybe you should learn from your Quebecois countrymen?
