Just in case you thought this was written by some far left activist kook: Dr. Jauhar is a cardiologist at Northwell Health in New York, where Dr. Patel and Dr. Smith are the directors of the center for heart failure and transplant.
The need for donor organs is urgent. An estimated 15 people die in this country every day waiting for a transplant. We need to figure out how to obtain more healthy organs from donors while maintaining strict ethical standards.
New technologies can help. But the best solution, we believe, is legal: We need to broaden the definition of death.

I removed myself as an organ donor about 15 years ago after reading a book about the industry.
-Relevant to the story posted, at that time the criteria that needed to be met to declare someone brain dead had already been weakened from the 60’s to the time of the book thanks to lobbying efforts from the industry.
-There was a lot of anecdotal evidence that the bodies of donors were reacting (spikes in BP, HR, body temperature) the way one would when feeling pain. When it was proposed they use anesthesia in these surgeries just in case, the industry refused saying there is no way they are feeling anything and that painkillers could impact the effectiveness of the transplant. It’s a ridiculous reason, because most of these donors have just been given all sorts of drugs trying to keep them alive. So, basically the organ donation industry is willing to have the donors feel themselves being ripped apart to avoid admitting the possibility, because they know less people would agree to donate a loved one’s organs with the idea there might be pain involved.
The only people who aren’t getting anything out of the organ donation process are the donors and their families, and their interests are completely ignored in the process.
Who’s surprised? It’s a slippery slope we said…you’re being paranoid they replied. I always thought organ donation would be mandatory sometime down the road.
Reminded me of the Miracle Max scene from The Princess Bride
Inigo: He’s dead. He can’t talk.
Miracle Max: Look who knows so much, huh? It just so happens your friend is only mostly dead. There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Please open his mouth. Now, mostly dead is slightly alive. Now, all dead… well, with all dead… there’s usually only one thing that you can do.
Inigo: What’s that?
Miracle Max: Go through his clothes and look for loose change…
The standard for death should be the parrot from Monty Python, nothing less.

Dear Drs. Jauhar, Patel, Smith,
You first, you psychotic weasels.
VR,
Everybody
I removed myself as an organ donor when they stopped giving transplants to unvaxed.
My reason as well.
Didn’t they all make it ‘implied consent’ by default? (If no answer to ‘ru organ donor?’ question, it’s considered you didn’t see it and it’s considered Yes).
Because Left is Evil: they always invent new ways to get/implement what they think is the best for us-proles. Who cares about personal liberties, freedom of choice etc.
I’ve read that the total value of the organs in a person’s body are worth around 4 million dollars. If true, that provides a massive perverse incentive for hospitals and the organ donor organizations to be aggressive about procuring organs. In Canada under socialized medicine, I assume that a significant portion of the proceeds from organ harvesting would go to government agencies.
Coincidentally, Canada has reportedly seen a surge in organ donation since implementing MAID. Expect a more lax definition of death, an expansion of MAID and a renewed push for presumed consent/opt out laws for organ donation in Canada
The value to the estate is $0, the value to the ghouls and psychopaths in the medical industry is $4 million.
Yep, the family of the deceased gets $0. TBF, giving the estate organ donation money would create another set of perverse incentive problems…unethical family members prematurely pulling the plug. In the end the answer is probably a scientific/technological solution. Growing organs that are a genetic match to the patient needing the replacement organs. But, because of the current organ donation system, I suppose cloning organs would less economically beneficial.

Thems fightin words!
l made a distinct and deliberate ‘show’ at the license bureau when l pulled my name, explaining that in my life the pattern was those mandated and tasked with dealing with a plethora of bullies, were too often, the main source of it.
l wish l had a video. very rude. many shocked onlookers. kcuf ’em.
‘cant take it with you’? WATCH ME.
I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth mentioning again. Governments are making a move at present to switch the donation participation around (preferably without legislation). Most countries/provinces that do participate in organ donation are set up to require the participant to sign up for the program. Currently, there’s a move to change the application to an “Opt Out” policy. This, of course, means you are a potential donor unless you remove yourself from the program. They are depending upon apathy and laziness from the constituents.
Secondly, about a year ago Kate posted a video where a couple people discussed Euthanasia in Canada. I can’t remember the participants. However, I posted in the YouTube comments that they were missing a big piece of the puzzle (organ donation from a relatively captive source). It was a passing comment that ended up getting nearly 10,000 comments (mostly from people who hadn’t considered this). It was eye opening. Take the UK, for example. Last year they changed all organ donation to “opt out” without legislation or discussion. They just did it. This year they approved Euthanasia. Draw your own conclusions. In Canada, only Nova Scotia is “Opt Out” on donations. Keep your eyes open, because I predict that they will make that the uniform policy across all provinces in the near future without fanfare. Currently, Canada leads the world in organ donation specifically from Euthanasia participants. It’s a real money maker for a lot of different parties. Some would assume it would be China…except, for now, LEGAL organ donation in China is still illegal.
Just food for thought.
In my younger days … when I was much further from deaths door (hopefully still far away) … I allowed a RED DOT to be placed on my drivers license indicating that I am an organ DONOR. No need to have my Lawyer provide the details of my Living Will, just start cutting me up like a steer carcass.
Speaking of Monty Python … I don’t want to be that guy on the “dead cart” who sits up and says … “but I’m NOT dead” … before getting clubbed in the head till actually dead. Yes, despite our high tech world … we’re headed back toward the Medieval practices of our third world immigrants. Diversity is our death.
when premier wynnedfarm tried it, it was pointed out and resoundingly criticize with what now appears to have been an ‘ ok, ok, we withdraw the program (but will reintroduce it with great subterfuge lattah SUCKAHS)’.
and here we are. slice and dice on a national scale.
The only problem with harvesting from MAID victims is the typical drug cocktail results in damage to the most profitable organs. Wait until they start using the Swiss pods for killing the victims – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarco_pod
Bill Clinton has offered to help define what the definition of death is … is.
So Joe Biden is dead, but Kamala Harris is debatable.
My bits are mine…they aren’t assets of the State to do with as they please.
What if the definition of death is when you are too poor to feed and shelter yourself?
If the government/insurance can get you offed, if you have our “free” health care, and disability insurance, the payments stop as soon as the plug is pulled.
I told my wife, keep me on life support as long as possible, decades if needed, payments will still be made into our account every two weeks then, they stop when I stop.
The Red Chinese have great expertise to contribute in this area.
