Ayatollah This Would Happen

How Trump and Bibi Outfoxed Iran

They died in their own beds.

Hossein Salami and Ali Shamkhani—Iran’s most senior military officers and the stewards of Iran’s nuclear weapons program—had spent years threatening Israel with destruction. They issued taunts, organized terrorist attacks, and orchestrated, since October 7, the encirclement of the Jewish state in a ring of fire of their terror proxies. And they knew—without the slightest illusion—that Israel had the capability and resolve to kill them.

This cohort saw the Israeli air force bury Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah in his bunker, hundreds of meters beneath the streets of Beirut. They saw Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh vaporized in a presidential guesthouse—in Tehran, no less. Yet on Thursday night, they came home as usual and went to sleep—unguarded, unworried, carefree. Like insurance salesmen and bank tellers following their daily routines, it never occurred to them that they might not wake in the morning.

But they didn’t.

In 1967, Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser made a similar mistake. He moved forces to Israel’s border, declared war in all but name, and left his MiG fighter jets parked in neat rows. Israeli prime minister Levi Eshkol hesitated publicly—then struck with speed, ferocity, and total surprise. By the time Nasser understood what had happened, his air force was already in ruins.

History just repeated itself. But why did these seasoned Iranian officers—veteran warriors, intelligence chiefs, regime survivors—lower their guard so completely? How did Israel achieve strategic surprise?

The simple answer: Benjamin Netanyahu read Donald Trump better than the Iranians.

  1. This article has an underlying implication that Israel has already defeated Iran. This is far from true.

While I generally support Israel, I absolutely do not want American troops getting involved. America is free to sell weapons to Israel. Fine. But more than that, I’m completely against.

    1. All well and good but don’t forget, Israel is just the little Satan. The USA is the big Satan. Iran has already infiltrated the USA and Gateway Pundit is reporting Kash is releasing documents showing Iranian hackers fiddled around with the election results in 2020. You may prefer not to admit it, but Iran is already attacking the USA and the USA is already involved. You don’t seriously think if Iran got the bomb they’d only bomb Tel Aviv do you?

    2. “While I generally support Israel, I absolutely do not want American troops getting involved. America is free to sell weapons to Israel. Fine.”

Same here…including the ‘bunker busting’ GBU-57 that Israel needs to finish the job.

Love him or hate him, Trump is absolutely correct when he says that Iran can NOT be allowed to build a nuclear weapon. Particularly with the current regime in charge.

        1. Newly repainted B2s?
          Newly repainted B52s?

or C130Js can also do it, assuming there are some dump kits laying around that can carry the bomb out the back ramp.

        2. “Re supplying GBU-57s to Israel; what Israeli planes could carry this bomb?”

As JD says, C130’s could easily do it….but it would be quicker to just paint a Star of David on a fully-loaded B2 and donate it to the Israelis.

    3. So the Israel gets to do the dirty work that no other nation has the balls to do.

  2. Regarding Nasser. He had several wooden fake airplanes out on the runways to make himself look even stronger than he was. The Israeli intelligence was so good they didn’t waste bombs on the fakes. This was even more upsetting than the destruction of the real planes for many Egyptians.

  3. Israel is using the same old playbook as they used against Hamas & Hezbollah

An airstrike Monday night killed Maj. Gen. Ali Shadmani, the new head of the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters, also known as Iran’s military emergency command. He had only been on the job for some four days, having replaced Maj. Gen. Gholam Ali Rashid, who was killed on Friday in Israel’s opening strikes against Iran.
The IDF said Shadmani was de facto Iran’s most senior military commander, the “war chief of staff,” and was considered the closest remaining military figure to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Shadmani “commanded both the [Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps] and the Iranian Armed Forces” amid the conflict, the IDF said.

  4. Remember Signalgate? Don’t feel bad, nobody else does either. Why? Because Trump so completely and thoroughly destroyed the Houthis capability to attack shipping that they had no option but to capitulate to Trump’s demand that they STOP attacking shipping (and US Naval vessels).

And you haven’t heard a peep about those complete military actions against the Houthis because it would simply show that Trump doesn’t use pin-prick ROE. No, he will simply smash you until you BEG for mercy … then call you his “friend”.

So, the media had no option but to drop “Signalgate” like a hot potato. Lest the actual TRUTH be told.

Don’t worry … they’ll be dropping their sudden love of Bannon/Carlson just as fast when either a) the 30k lb bunker busters start dropping or b) The Iranians beg for surrender talks … or the inevitable combination of both. Wait. Iran is formidable! Think Republican Guard formidable! The mother of all Formidable. Just like with Yemen and the Houthis … I’ll take Trump-formidable over all other forms of formidable.

Don’t worry Robert, I highly doubt US boots will ever hit the ground. In Iran.

  5. US citizens will not be in Iran other than to accept an unconditional surrender.

  6. I was messing around pulling up Iranian media outlets last night and stumbled across a blurb in an online newspaper outside of Tehran proper. It noted that the three top intelligence personnel in their IRGC were “martyred”.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested, this particular site provides access to 1000’s of world wide media outlets. Over the last few years it has become a worthwhile tool because translation options are more readily available. Just be careful relative to “cookie options”. They don’t translate those pop ups and you have to know the language to determine which option blocks them.

  7. There is one other factor that bears on the attitudes of those senior officials who seemingly ignored Israel’s ability to attack them personally in their homes. It is their belief in fate, or the will of Allah, as they put it. To a great extent, they truly believe that Allah has appointed the hour and manner of their death, and that there is absolutely nothing that they, or anyone else for that matter, can do about it.

  8. How well did Bibi read Trump? About that GBU-57: Most people think this is the only weapon that can destroy that enrichment facility. It isn’t. A nuke can do it and Israel has them. Bibi knows he can finish this 2 ways: Either he nukes the place, or Trump is forced to drop that Penetrator (or several). He can put the monkey on Trump’s back. You take it out, or we nuke it. Trump won’t allow the nuke for obvious reasons. Option B is killing enough of the leadership that they give it up. Israel is going for all the marbles on this one. That site is going down one way or another.

    1. Meanwhile … John F Kerry is busy, meeting Iranian Ambassadors and Nuclear Treaty officials in Paris … when he’s not falling off his bicycle. Yeah … try that NOW, Kerry? And you’ll be arrested or shot on the spot as a traitor, committing sabotage, sedition, and subversive acts against America.

This is Trump.2.0 … not. Fkcuing. Around.

    1. I wonder if there isn’t a better plan than replacing a bunch of murdering sons-of-bitches with the son of a murdering son-of-a-bitch?

  10. Regime change is going to take a lot more than some bombs. It usually requires boots on the ground, at least in some portion of the country. As far as that goes, why would regime change in Iran work out any better than it did in Iraq? How many people, at the time, thought that would be a piece of cake? Years and thousands of dead American serviceman later, Iraq is scarcely a better place than it was under Saddam.

    1. Destroy enough Iranian government and the people will take over.

    2. “Regime change is going to take a lot more than some bombs. It usually requires boots on the ground, at least in some portion of the country. ”

Yes, but in this case it will be Iranian boots…the vast majority of them HATE the mullahs with a passion.

“As far as that goes, why would regime change in Iran work out any better than it did in Iraq? How many people, at the time, thought that would be a piece of cake? ”

Yes, some politicians thought that all we had to do was offer them democracy and they would jump at the chance. Turns out that Islam and democracy are not very compatible. Fortunately Donald Trump is not stupid, and he actually learns from past mistakes (not only his own, but the mistakes of others as well).
