Canada’s dairy cartel is still off the table?
Yet all the tariffs the US have imposed are subject to change?
2027 is going to be a tough year, more so if Ontario’s auto industry moves south
Any successes that Canada can point to? Not promises of success in a decade, I mean the #Libranos have been in office for a decade but all we’ve gotten more of are taxes and rampant inflation, and immigrants who poop at the beaches and dump garbage on farmer’s fields.
No idea how related this is to the trade agreement, it seems a preemptive move
“The Liberal government gave Stellantis $105 million to keep the Brampton Ont auto plant open and to save 2200 jobs. As per contract, the company has given the union the required 1 year notice that they are thinking of selling or closing the currently shutdown plant. 2200 jobs may be lost along with 10000s of feeder or secondary jobs. Perhaps those spending 24 hours a day critcizing Pierre P should spend 24 hours a day going after the Liberal government for this potential failure.”

the bill comes to $48,000 per zhob.
(wuzzidwurthidd?) ask a Liberal, how many votes that $48k translates into
aaaaaaand there’s yer answer !!!
The Carney/Liberal dictat that all cars/trucks sold in Canada by 2036 must be electric is what will finally kill off the auto industry. Given a choice that you must build vehicles in Canada you can’t sell or you can build in the US what sells is not a choice, but yeh, its Trumps fault. Eliminating the EV mandates is a prerequisite for the survival of the auto industry in Canada.
The vehicle market in Canada is approaching 2 million vehicles per year, time to ask what the US and the auto makers are offering for access to that market.
“Any successes that Canada can point to? ”
Sure, Canada kicked America’s ass on the Gordie Howe Bri –
(oh, wait…never mind…)
Typical BNN Elbows Up article.
Typical institutional Chinadian response.
Sorry, but Chinada has little to no leverage in these negotiations. That former negotiator still refuses to understand the future, other than “there will be tears”. He seems to clue in a bit there.
Otherwise, he uses the same old “we should reciprocate” nonsense that will only result in Chinada losing again.
The only numbers that need to be understood to comprehend the impact of US trade?
77% of Chinada’s exports are US bound.
This is 23% of Chinada’s GDP.
15% of US exports are Chinada bound. Down from 25% in 1999. Mexico imports more US goods than Chinada now. And they’ve settled already. Smart. Shrewd. Intelligent.
This is 1.5% of the US GDP. Peanuts.
After the Pride, comes the Fall.
And, stop lecturing the Americans about the “pain” they will allegedly incur. It pales in comparison to the damage that will be self-inflicted by Chinada. This country is the Black Knight of Monty Python infamy!

“And, stop lecturing the Americans about the “pain” they will allegedly incur. It pales in comparison to the damage that will be self-inflicted by Chinada.”
Absolutely true, despite their many frantic attempts to deny it. The laughable “but both sides will suffer!” excuse that they keep stammering out is my favorite.
Our Prime Minister botched this right from the beginning with his “Elbows Up!” idiocy, and our Official Opposition, seeing the electoral success of it, jumped on board as quickly as possible (as did the NDP). Only one Canadian political party, to my knowledge, had the courage to speak the truth about how stupidly dangerous to our economy this tactic was.
I have always thought that the primary issue is Canada’s willingness to serve as a stop over for Chinese (and other foreign parts makers). “Industry” (with the exception of lumber and Crude) in Canada has transformed over a period of time into an assembly service so that other countries can avoid US tarrifs (or, at least, limit them) by shipping parts to Canada for assembly before exporting to the US as a “Canadian” product. In short, China took advantage of the USMCA by using Canada as a surrogate for their wares.
When the US president goes loony, embracing fringe economic theories that harm all of North America, there is no winning for either country. There are only various shades of losing.
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Have you seen the US’s economic numbers for the last six months? Do you see a lot of winning there?
In 2022 … the FED raised rates by 5,313%
In 2026 … the FED lowered rates by -0.27%
The FED is deliberately strangling the economy … to STOP Biden’s runaway COVID-flation … which they measure is still reverberating across our economy.
Do try to keep up with the ACTUAL drivers of our current economic activity.
Lowering the Federal Funds Effective Rate stimulates the economy by lowering short-term borrowing costs. You know that, right?
And the rate has fallen through Trump’s second term:
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/fedfunds
Yet … no one is lending and no one is borrowing. There is no money in our economic system that drives EVERYTHING. I know … I’m very close to the business. And the credit card companies and banks are literally ripping off the bottom half of borrowers … making obscene, usurious profits.
The proper response for you was “Sorry, my mistake. My economics is a little rusty”
And it doesn’t surprize me that businesses are holding onto their cash. Trump’s erratic trade policy has everyone spooked. And there may be growing nervousness over the fiscal situatation, which Trump seems unconcerned about.
Expect more rates drops.
Pssst … it’s not been enough. Nothing pencils out when the cost of borrowing remains HIGH. Too Late FED policy only helps their banker friends … and to borrow one of your go-to phrases … high interest rates are a TAX on the American people. A tax you can only escape if you have no NEED to borrow.
The government has much direct control over short-term interest rates, but little direct control over long-term interest rates.
The main driver of mortgage rates is the 30 year treasury bond auction. Note the word auction. The buyers of the bonds determine the yield. And those yields have been going up lately, perhaps in response to the government’s deteriorating fiscal position.
No fringe economic theories whatsoever. In fact, he is right on target.
Trump views international trade as a zero-sum game, where there’s always a winner and a loser — like a baseball game. Mainstream economics views international trade as generally mutally beneficial.
Tariffs hurt the country whose products are targeted, but they also hurt the country imposing the tariffs. As one example, aluminum prices are through the roof in the US, about half again as much as in Canada. This makes American aluminum products expensive for US consumers and less competitive in world markets:
https://www.spglobal.com/energy/en/news-research/latest-news/metals/060426-year-of-the-tariff-us-aluminum-end-users-endure-major-tariff-headwinds
I do agree with you — mainstream economics does view international trade (at exceedingly high volume) as mutually beneficial (they don’t even qualify it with “generally” most of the time).
But when can it be detrimental? Are there conditions where it would be best to limit international trade?
Then you have to consider whether limitations would be short or long term, so those affects have to be considered. And, most importantly of all, when does encouraging and limiting best suit goals?
Are you sure it’s my President who sees trade as a zero-sum game (I prefer to liken it to a ‘black or white scenario’ as that probably best describes), or has it been others, and that’s what has gotten us all here to this point?
Remember: economics is merely a piece, not the whole tool (much as many economists like to think otherwise); how can that tool be welded to achieve other (bigger) goals?
There may indeed be times when tariffs are justified in order to rein in some truly abusive trade practice. But those are special cases. Trump has been imposing widespread tariffs on most of the world indiscriminately.
I don’t recall Trump explicitly using the words “zero-sum game”, but he and his advisors continually talk as if that were the case. One well known Trump tweet said:
This sort of statement makes economists roll their eyes; the assumption that getting rid of a trade deficit with a country by throttling trade is an automatically win.
And the irony is that the US balance of trade has barely budged.
https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/balance-of-trade
Buying LOTS of shit … really cheaply … from Communist China … because they pay defacto slave wages and have ZERO environmental or labor regulations.
This is directly analogous to Mamdani’s government grocery stores that promise a 30% discount on groceries. The government is subsidizing the total elimination of competition. No other grocery store can compete with that.
That’s not FREE trade … it’s communist … OK OK … “Democratic Socialist” … trade.
And, like most mainstream economists, you are only looking at it through the lens of economics. And that causes a rather skewed outlook because economics is as much tethered by ideology as any other social science, perhaps more. This leads to a near fatal inflexibility of thought; of the sort that make island cargo cults understandable.
What advantages would a protectionist trade policy (it’s more nuanced than this, but we’ll go with it) have for a country, particularly one that can successfully enact one? Then we can get to the “when would it be advisable”? Because that’s important too.
PS. my President’s tweets are a tool he uses; thus, you have to separate what he says from what he does (or tries to do, considering the amount of headwind)
International trade is a zero-sum game. There is always a winner and a loser. Aluminum is subsidized by Quebec power rates. Canada is toast.
Thank you for that opinion. Thomas Sowell disagrees.

l wd disagree with that zero-sum.
nation X has huge capability in activity/resource X, diddly squat
in activity/resource Y.
nation Y is the complete mirror, nogoodnick in activity/resource X but has cornered the mkt in activity/resource Y
it hugely benefits BOTH to give up what they have in abundance in exchange for what they dont. *extremely so* in the long term.
this is hardly ‘zero sum game’
why Canaduh with its ginormous resource base and FORMER brain trust is in the shape it is now, l can only chalk up to the enduring presence of liberalism
This is incorrect, but many have become wedded to this notion, so de facto it is the truth. It has been very lucrative for certain entities for political reasons, so understandable that this would be the message pushed. Nonetheless, it is a skewed way of thinking that has led to quite a lot of harm.
International trade, free markets can be beneficial — just not everywhere, all the time, never changing; just like restricted trade.
For everything there is a season and all that.
And at Halloween, there will be no ghosts. Only various shades of losers…
LOL lets be real here. Quebec runs this country, and even faced with a 1000 percent tariffs on everything, Ottawa will protect Quebec’s dairy interests, with the bodies of every Canadian, if need be.
The US doesn’t give a damn about the Canadian dairy cartel. It’s an excuse, nothing else. US tariffs on Canadian lumber, imposed on and off for more than 50 years, have been vastly more damaging.
That doesn’t mean Canada shouldn’t get rid of the cartel, as it drives up prices for consumers and provides Trump with a (lame) excuse. But it’s not the actual issue.
You’re right in that it is by no means the primary focus. However, back in 2021 the US did file for Arbitration on the “Cartels” underhanded practice of abusing TRQ’s (Tariff Rate Quotas). Apparently, the “Cartel” was setting aside the bulk of its dairy import quotas only for Canadian dairy processors. They were purposely restricting market access. And, the Arbitration Board ruled against Canada on the issue. There was a subsequent ruling on the matter when the Cartel supposedly restructured the process that didn’t go the US’s way, so the issue remains very much alive.
Canada’s dairy protectionism was agreed to in the USMCA. The 2021 dispute was over how it was administered. Canada won in part and the US won in part. Canada then changed how it the program was administered to align with the ruling. The US still didn’t like it and filed a complaint, which they (mostly) lost.
Supply management has to go.
Maybe, but it’s small potatoes for the Trump administration.
“Supply management has to go.”
I will tell you why it never will. Remember Max Bernier? Nobody remembers Max Bernier. That’s why.
“Remember Max Bernier?”
Didn’t he die or something. I think he died.
Maybe he’s in prison. I read his followers were so proud that he got arrested for something.
Anyway, that Maxime fella(Maxime was a guy) was a conservative cabinet minister who shamed himself and had to resign. He couldn’t take the shame and quit the conservative party only to resign his seat and then get beaten in the next election.(again and again)
I guess the Liberals stopped funding him and he’s toast.(I think he may have died)
I’m now angling for a seat on the Canadian Small Potato Board.
L – When Justin Trudeau was P.M. and for 10 years went hardline on the “Climate Crisis” and Net Zero. Suppressing the Natural Resource development drove away an estimated $1Trillion of investment. Racking up deficit, after deficit, a long term burden on Canadians. Then magnified it via the Panic-demic Lockdowns, crippling production of goods and services. Then using that as an excuse for doubling the National Debt. Many people thought “What an incompetent bungler Canada has as a Prime Minister!”
Au contraire, the plan was Mark Carney’s and a direct copy of the World Economic Forum policies that have destroyed the economies of the U.K. and the E.U., with the added chaos of mass migration from hostile cultures. The only economic effect of the Banker/Carpetbagger P. M.’s policies have been negative. The OECD forecast of 30 years of economic stagnation, think swamp, has not changed.
Oddly, only China and Canada are engaging in a tariff war with the Trump administration. The loss of a favourable trade agreement will devastate Canada, leaving it poised for the failed state Liquidation Mgr., masquerading as a Prime Minister, to allow China access to the shuttered natural resources. This under hidden, but most favourable deals. Which is what British Columbia is being prepped for now.
The economic, cultural and political chaos is the execution of a clever and nefarious conspiracy.
Our faint, but best hope is that America, unlike China, does not want a failed state on it’s northern border.

sumbuddy puuuuLEEZE explain how he stayed in the PMO for an entire decade?
Worst ever???
LOL!
Trudeau kept Liberal in power for 10 years. Carney saved the Liberals with his Elbows and gave them another 4 years.
This is how Liberals define success. Their continuing grasp onto power. Nothing else matters to them. They couldn’t care less that every Canadian spends several hundred extra dollars every year propping up the Quebec dairy cartel. The Quebec dairy cartel props up Liberals and keeps them elected. That is all that matters to them. And their friends. And the Liberal Party of Canada has lots of friends.
Isn’t your PM on vacation in Italy with his LGBTQueeredup family … ? Come on maaa’aaan, it can’t be all that bad.
He’s fully engaged in Karen Bass leadership.
Mr. Carney is vacationing in Tuscany suspiciously close to the villa of his billionaire former Brookfield colleague Bruce Flatt.
It can be all that bad.
“We have so much in common.
Not really the case anymore …..
So many Canadians would do anything just to be able not to see the writing on the wall.
They’ve been avoiding or going alongs with the signs of decline for over a decade now.
It’s terrible to think or even suggest there is no easy out for what’s left of the soul in this country, either enough of us agree and hold on to it, or it rightfully dies.
There’s a difference between being positive and absolutely pathetic.
Too bad li’l Pee-pee and his party painted themselves into the same corners as bobblehead and the Liberals, eh. Because of that, he’s forced to sing from the same songbook.
sadly, a LOT of validity to that assertion aka = ‘uniparty’
(why did the ALL applaud the HoC nazi?)
He has to dance with the people who brought him, same as the fellow from the Canadian Global Affairs Institute.
Many Canadians would vote to eat to eat their own shit over a deal “with Trump”.
My MIL has super Elbow’s Up TDS and when in telephone calls with my better half she can’t help but say things like “smoke from Trump’s fires” or “President Stupid”. (She also works for Elections Canada…)
BUT the Liberals love money, especially other people’s money, and they especially love American dollars.
Even if the Laurentian Elite will get less, they’ll compromise, because they have to.
I’d rather they didn’t, because Canada needs to change, but first it needs to bottom out and go to a very dark place before it can be reborn.
Canada is province of China now and will do what the mother country needs doing. That means no deal with the US as China wants all of Canada’s raw materials sent to them for them to distribute as necessary. At some point, a democratic President will come along and negotiate with Canada a deal to have China send to Canada the finished goods for resale to the US.
Here’s a message of hope for you (Canada, in general): in the end, you will likely come out all right. There is going to be a period of pain, but consider it as part of a process — birthing pains, if you will.
Of course, this is contingent upon not losing your heads and doing something rash (this could be a problem, granted; there are a lot of vested interests and they do have a say; they’ve been saying quite a bit and many of your people have internalized it).
“Birthing pains”? Hardly….end of life pain.
Don’t be so very doom and gloom. Although I will grant that psyop has worked to our favor as well (which means we didn’t come up with it, but when an opportunity presents itself…).
jane
There is a reason the GOP and kanukistan CUCKservatives are labeled the Stupid parties, and that fact leaves us with NO political party that will effectively govern for the Canadian people.
There is also a reason why GYM is so incredibly stupid, fetal alcohol syndrome.
GYM you one fish eyed mofo…
And a drooling onanist.
There’s a song about drooling onanism, isn’t there? “Drool on, it’s a crazy feeling, drool on, it’s got me reeling… “
You spelled “fecal” wrong.
Nothing lasts forever; none of us knows what’s going to happen. However, certain things have been set into motion that present the possibilities for a certain set of scenarios being the probably course. Only one at this point is fatal for the Canadian people. We’ll see what happens.
Jane, Jane, Jane … you ignorant slu-
Just kidding. Forgive my memory of when SNL was actually funny.
Canada has adopted the exact same strategy as the IRGC … wait till the midterms … then wait for 2028. Canada can’t wait to interfere with US elections and get all those DSA candidates … who HATE Thanksgiving … who HATE trad-America … across the finish line.
Meanwhile Canada has to wait … what? Another decade till they can ditch this PM? Good luck with THAT brand of … Democracy, eh?
” when SNL was actually funny.”
heh heh heh. and l stopped watching it around the time Cdn Dan Ackroyd
left for his film career. jist sayin’ . . . . .
Kenji, I will forgive you calling me disparaging names because you are being silly.
10 years is a very long time for an individual perhaps, but not for a country. And there is no guarantee that it will be that long.
Meanwhile, they are doing things that are very advantageous long term for a plan that we have. It will be beneficial for us (and that’s my main concern), but it will also be beneficial for them — they just will have to go through a period of wailing and gnashing of teeth (already happening), but if (big ‘if’, true) it should come to pass, their grandchildren will be ok. People really should start thinking generationally rather than quarterly — economics is but a cog, not the whole toolbox and all that.
“not losing your heads ”
oh ya right, like the fable of the scorpion hitching a ride on the back of the monkey crossing a stream? liberals are so, so, bafflingly HARD WIRED to vote as they do despite all the signs of damage present and future. whine whine whine hospital emergency wait times caused by >1,000,000 ‘asylum seekers’ some aka ‘new criminal enterprise opportunity seekers’ WITHOUT some ‘prep’ work by, oh, say, opening up medical school positions timed for the influx? etc etc.
(it all would have had to happen during the 10 yr tenure of our WORST p.m. ever)
Again, I do have to reiterate that I concern myself with the interests of my own people first and foremost, but in all good games of strategy it is very worth remembering that every move your opponent makes presents opportunities for you. And if you can shape the circumstances in such a way as to have them present you with more opportunities. Also, many games aren’t as zero-sum as many have been led to believe; one has to be willing to accept a draw or a stalemate.
My President tweets 51st state, your government seized the day on that, your populace fell for it (I will sidenote here that the “Elbows Up” thing was of the same sort of doom and gloom propaganda as the more overtly so; those in power want you scared, divided, and at a loss; this did provide opportunity for us, hard though it is to ascertain and of course we’re going to use it), and now your opposition party is making noises (because they want power). They will do things, not because they want to/for what would be the right reasons, but because they have to — things that in the end may be mutually beneficial though they are hard to see in the moment.
The #Lieberals work for the Chicoms, and for Europe. They do not work for -us.- Okay? Let’s try that as a thesis and see how we go.
A trade deal favorable to China and Europe is one where Canada can’t sell to the USA, so we are forced to sell cheap in Europe and China.
A situation where we can sell oil and gas to Europe is bad for China. They don’t want that. That’s why no pipeline. Western pipeline built first. There’s not going to be an eastern pipeline.
If I were #Trump, I’d kick the #Lieberals in the nethers until they capitulate or get replaced by people who are not friends with the Chicoms.
Anybody in America is “feeling the pinch”? Dream on, my poor friends in Canadaland. Change your leadership or choke. Look at the numbers. Can you spell “way behind”? How is the view as the last dog in the pack? Not changing? I love you, even the economically and culturally suicidal of you, but I cannot help you.
