  1. Of course China is going to lean on Canada. They’re going to lean on and extort everyone. The propaganda department is running overtime — it does concern me in an offhand way that they are using clips from a speech Mao gave BEFORE he murdered millions of Chinese; it’s telling. I’m not an inhumane person at the end of the day — innocent people are likely going to die, perhaps many.
    I’m afraid many foolish Westerners really believed that China was opening up and democratizing; nothing could have been further from the truth. Never ever believe that any communist will be doing that in good faith, and never ever believe them when they say they only want what’s best for their country/people.
    Unfortunately, there are too many in the West who, for reasons well-intended or, mostly, otherwise, still want to engage with that fantasy. And Canada is one such place that seems very invested in this.

      While I was working on my Ph. D. 25 or so years ago, at least a quarter of the graduate students in the department I was in were from the PRC. I, like many, believed the idea that China was indeed opening up and was gradually shedding its communist dictatorship.

      Yeah, right. Looking back, I’m convinced that many were enrolled there simply to steal secrets as some of the research would have been of great interest to the PRC. One in particular is now a tenured professor at a certain university.

      1. Many of them do so willingly — especially if their family has party membership. Others do it because they are forced to; it would go very badly for them and their families if they didn’t (which I should think, if one considers oneself a human being, should disgust). The latter are usually not sent to high priority universities, but the CCP is hungry for any sort of spy work. This includes agitprop/disinformation warfare. Infiltration, not invasion, and war by other means.

        One of my family members is Chinese. They thought it was a mistake to engage in the ‘opening up’ of China; they also thought it was a mistake to believe in the perestroika movement. “Communists don’t give up power so easily.” — words from the wise, or at the very least one with first hand knowledge. To think that one sort of communist is different than any other was and is ridiculous. We are now getting to experience how correct my dear relative was; it is still undecided as to whether or not our mistakes will be fatal (and not just to us).

        1. The professor I mentioned had an interesting story. She graduated from a top PRC university but, for some reason, she ended up in Canada. Her father had, apparently, been a prisoner of the Red Guard for a while during Mao’s time, so that might have been used against her. In addition, her mother and sisters were still there.

          Mind you, her father’s earlier status didn’t prevent her parents from coming over for a visit. The first time, I think, was to check out a potential son-in-law. The second time as to take care of their infant granddaughter after she gave birth to the kid.

          But, because she was quite intelligent, I’m sure that the CCP saw her as a potential source of information. There were a few things about her that didn’t quite add up for me, so that might be a logical explanation.

          1. Any member of a black family would have extra pressure put upon them to prove their ‘worth’, so yes that could be the case. Then again, she could have been lying through her teeth about her father’s run in with the Red Guard. It would depend very much on what the family’s actual history was.

  2. China isn’t like us. They have no problem letting their people starve to death. It’s not what communists do; it’s who they are.

    1. “China isn’t like us.” — are you so sure that we are not becoming more like them?
      And by “we” I mean the collective West. Think about some of the laws and regulations that have been put into place; the number of experts who tout the Chinese system here in the West.

      What you do very much tells the world what you are (as opposed to what you say which can be something altogether different).

  3. Myanmar earthquake “news”. CTV aired a “news” segment that showed a Chinese transport aircraft delivering aid to Myanmar. Now a couple of weeks ago we saw a building under construction collapse over there, very dramatic. But where is the news about widespread devastation and starvation? There doesn’t seem to be any.

    In the “news” segment they showed a cardboard box with the Chinese aircraft behind it, but they seem to know who their audience is because written on the box, in English, or ‘Chinglish’, or ‘Engrish’, it said in bold letters something like ‘China friendship happy aid’ or something equally awkward.

    English is not the language of Myanmar or China. Myanmar seems to be able to take care of itself after the earthquake?

    The whole CTV “news” segment seemed to be a propaganda exercise probably ordered up by the Liberal racist Party under orders from the Communist Party of China. They’re pulling out all the stops…

    1. Myanmar was formerly known as Burma, which used to be a British colony. It’s quite possible that English is still widely spoken in that country.

      1. Okay. And they probably have boxes written in English ready to go so they get nice tv coverage for their Liberal communist allies here in our universities, corporate, and government bureaucracies to consume. But that makes it worse.

    2. Did they mention that the collapsed buildings were built as part of the Belt and Road Initiative? I’m assuming “no”.

  4. not a contrarian by nature, l think the opening up that happened under teng xiao peng was ummm, ‘genuine’ inasmuch as they were in fact exploring this new thing.
    then Tiananmen square happened and they all reverted to type. it was too much too fast. alas anything that happened would probably wind up ‘too much too fast’.
    and part of the problem as we see happening in Canaduh, its real real easy to LOSE freedoms; all it takes is a compliant populace. and a thug mindset in government. we got both so buckle up.

    1. They opened up because they needed foreign money, simple as. Lenin did the same thing; Stalin certainly didn’t turn away foreign investment. And those two were hardly paragons of civil liberties and capitalism.

      Communists will always try and get capitalist money, and they will always lie to get it, and they will always turn around and use it to destroy capitalist countries — by any means necessary.
      Never trust them.

    LOL more delusion from a pseudo-historian hack. The US is in decline and increasingly out of its mind and unreliable. This is plain and clear for all to see and is screamingly obvious thanks to Orange Tard. China is shaking hands all up and down SEA and in the EU. The US accounts for less of its exports than in 2018.
