Boondoggle Opportunities

I’m surprised that there was no mention of high speed rail as a domestic “investment” gambit for Canadian pension funds.

The policy statement was issued following a request by former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz, who was given a broad mandate by the government last year to find ways to persuade Canada’s large pension funds to deploy more of their billions in investment dollars in Canada.

  1. Well, given current events I would expect some good short-term opportunities at the departure terminals in the near future…

  2. Ok, you guys have to help me out here. Your government wants to raid pension accounts. I understand that part. They want it to appear like a solid opportunity and a sound investment. Their recommended investment opportunities are in the form of Airport facilities (stores, hotels, terminals). Ok, got it.

But, at the same time your government is pushing a 2050 date for Net-Zero status. Now, I admit to being a bit slow. But, it seems to me that just like the US’s “Green New Deal”, the effort by the Green side of the aisle is to severely limit (to possibly ban) air traffic so as to meet those Net-Zero goals. Those planes aren’t fueled by pulling back a big rubber band. So, why is your government recommending investment in Airports while simultaneously trying to convince your citizens to limit air travel?

    1. Given the carnies predilection could very well see this being imposed in the near future, or rather it’ll be incentivized. …by law to only invest in Canada

    2. ‘Cause limiting air travel is only for the little people. Ever keep track of the number of private planes that show up at a COP event?

    3. Your confusion comes from thinking Canada’s government has the best interest of it’s citizens in mind. Lose that paradigm and it makes more sense.

      1. With Carney and the Green Goblins at the helm, they should invest in some stables and new buggy factories.

Not a chance in hell of a stake in a pipeline.

    4. You have answered your own question.
Have you ever seen a ground hog with a brain parasite ?
It constantly does circles, and I think there is a pill for that, if your inclined or a shovel.
For the affliction you raise about our country I don’t know if voting is any kind of remedy.

  3. Why would any pension “invest” in a country that has terrible returns when their requirement is typically in the 8 – 12% range, and there are very few opportunities to reach that in Canada?

  4. Maybe it’s because pension funds have a fiduciary duty to invest in projects that have a positive return matching their payments. They can recognize a turkey like we can.

  5. Rode hard and put away wet for the last ten years.. I would think, Simply taking all your money and holding it as American currency would be the best Canadian retirement plan available. That’s about as sad as sad gets..
