Looks like Black Peter finally usurped St. Nicholas.
My Dutch family always celebrates the feast of Sinterklaas, and up until 15 years ago or so, had friends dress up as the saint and his helper Zwarte Piet (full costume and blackface). Grew up with it and never thought anything offensive about it and still don’t – there was never any talk or mockery about slavery or white supremacy around this tradition, but perhaps that’s because I’m blinded by my supposed privilege /sarc.
But if we’re really going to dig into why this tradition is under attack, then it’s worth noting that the historical St. Nicholas was supposedly a Turk and his helper/slave would likely have been captured and sold or traded by arabs.
