An SDA regular noticed something a bit different with how Cabela’s presents themselves to Canadians vs. to Americans. Not faulting them at all, they just don’t want to offend too many snowflakes.

They tried to get rid of “Merry Christmas” here in the States. Most of the stores instructed their employees to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”.
That lasted maybe 2 – 3 years. For the most part, the American people rebelled, and most stores, particularly smaller ones, went back to “Merry Christmas”.
I’ve noticed a couple of the larger chain stores have just gone to responding in kind. Whatever the customer says, “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” or whatever, then the cashiers respond with the same. No reason to needlessly pi$$ off a bunch of customers when you don’t have to.

Also, note the difference in the amount that qualifies for free shipping. In Canada, it’s C$149. In the US, it’s US$50. Yeah, there’s an exchange rate difference, but not C$99 difference. It seems shipping costs in Canada are a *ahem* trifle higher than in the US. Canadians are getting hosed and it’s not by Cabela’s. It’s your shippers.
P.S. The rest of the year, in stores that train their cashiers to say, “Have a nice day”, my response is, “Thanks, but I had other plans.”
Shipping costs at the US postal service are significantly less than @ Canada Post. And twice as fast.
USPS is probably deeper in the red than Canada Post..
I’m sure some snowflakes will still be offended by the white kids without their mixed-race two mommies (or daddies).
And, speaking of diversity, this year’s PC Holiday Insider’s Report (Weston/Loblaw) tries very hard to include just about every ethnicity and holiday. Ever heard of Nowruz? I hadn’t so I looked it up. It’s the Persian New Year celebrated in March. It’s not even celebrated at this time of year so why include it?
Regarding shipping rates, I know of one small business that has suspended mail order because of the postal strike. Definitely not very Merry here.
Old folks like me still send Christmas cards, that is off the to do list this year. Sending an email or a text is not exactly personal to us old farts.
We still send Christmas cards as well, but not this year. Same for the birthdays and anniversaries that fall around this time of year. No cards for them either.
(As an aside, I was looking at the USPS website recently and couldn’t believe the selection of beautiful stamps available, especially for Christmas. Our stamps are truly ugly.)
There ARE a lot of cool looking stamps. And three or four types of Christmas stamps. I get the Madonna and Child stamps every year. Each year that stamp features a different classic painting.
Well, VOWG, the hour is late and, so, while it is bit early, I’m not going to miss this chance to wish you a merry Christmas. I hope you are well.
The times are achanging. I can feel it. While I won’t be around to see it, I am buoyed by this impression and have renewed hope for my grandchildren’s future.
I will do the same. Merry Christmas. Ours will be with all our family if the plans are not flushed by illness or bad weather.
VOWG … I just returned from my daughter’s place where we celebrated Thanksgiving. Yesterday, she mailed the first batch of Christmas cards with her boys (4-1/2, 2-1/2) putting them in the post office mail slot. Her 2-1/2 yo mistakenly put the cards in the parcel post slot … we hope they get delivered.
Yeah, I raised her right.
My response to “Happy Holidays” is “And what holiday would that be?”
The holy days.
And that is the irony of their attempt to cancel our tradition.
Happy Holy Days
Ditto.
It surprises me that snowflakes would even shop there.
Outdoor clothing is “trendy” these days. You see an amazing amount of blue hair nose rings shopping hunting outdoors stores these days. They will wait until they reach a critical demographic, then do everything to shut down the departments they don’t like. Bass Pro Canada “when it could”, didn’t sell handguns for this reason.
Most of us just saw good quality durable clothing at reasonable prices.
…” good quality durable clothing at reasonable prices.”
That went away when BassPro took over. Under its founders Cabela’s would have stuff designed and made to their standards, now they just sell brands on crap made as cheaply as possible.
Mostly made in: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh.
Will not buy!
Cotton from Mexico is superior, I have some carhartt pants made in Mexico and are 10 years old!
I would sooner buy from Mexico, then Vietnam or Cambodia, China, as a last resort, but absolutely refuse to buy from the 3 mentioned above!
The delicate sensibilities of fragile little canadians could put anyone out there, whether they are doing something, or not doing something, in front of a human rights tribunal – and that sucker can be fined thousands of dollars personally.
Cabela’s must still be profitable in canada for now, but as canadians decided to tank the dollar besides regulate and litigate private companies to achieve political ends, then the adults in charge of that company will have to pack up and go home eventually.
Wait… Don’t tell me, let me guess…
The cap on the left is .ca (how utterly appropriate!)
What do I win?
Did anyone else notice that the Canadian Cabela’s is pushing the race- mixing shite as usual in their ad??
Not the American ad.
So tired of this crap. Blacks make up 2.6% of the population, but any foreigner coming here would think they are 75%!!
Just saw an ad on Youtube for SportChek: black father, Asian mother, two mixed-race kids frolicking in the snow. Happens all the time, right?
The UK is 90% ethnic if you only watch the TV adverts, even the black guys i work with think it is beyond a joke.
Asian women (Chinese especially) do not like black men, with exceedingly rare exceptions. They would be a very, very small fraction of a percent of mixed-race marriages.
I have noticed the last few years that Canadian Tire is now advertising using ‘Christmas’. Take the small victories where you can get ’em….
Loblaws and the other chains have no problem trumpeting ‘Happy Diwali” and ‘Happy Eid’ in their flyers…but somehow ‘Merry Christmas’ is offensive.
I noticed Canadian Tire adds are very “diverse” and that white men are rare in them. “Families” without a father being shown.
The President’s Choice Holiday Insiders Report I mentioned above, features a “family photo” with an older white woman (mom?), a mixed-race woman, a very black man, a mixed-race child, and an Asian looking child. No older man (father) in the picture. I can’t figure out the relationships between them all. Not like any family I know.
You can’t pick up any magazine these days without all this diversity. Even the hand models are “people of colour.”
USPS is probably deeper in the red than Canada Post..
“GAY”,but not “Merry”?
Who ‘da thunk it?
I was at BPS Vaugn Mills yesterday because we got snowed out from shore fishing.
There was a pretty good inexpensive ($6) pocket knife for stocking stuffing.
The fish tank was empty for maintenance and the security guard said the fish were sent to the Niagra Falls store and will be back soon.
The giant catfish is in with the stream trout next to the empty aquarium.
After a couple of days… what stream trout? They better hurry up with that tank maintenance.
