Affordable? The relatively small house in Milton still sold for over $1.2 million.
The retirement community I live in consists of mini-homes, semis and luxury single family dwellings. The single ones are listed at 600 thousand-add HST and deed transfer tax and your purchase price is 710, 000 and only half of them have sold. Can you imagine paying 110,000 in taxes alone? Who can afford those prices.

BINGO …. that is exactly what I fear. Once the problem is too big it is almost impossible to repair without a cure so severe no one is willing to implement it.
We passed that point long ago. As I’ve pointed out before, Canada gives out citizenship like water. Short of giving the government the power to strip citizenship from people, there’s no way to send all the recent immigrants back even if there were the political will to do so.
Letting interest rates rise until the housing market stabilizes is going to bankrupt a staggering amount of people. Cutting government spending will bankrupt thousands of civil servants with no real job skills. The trades operate as closed guilds. The unions are political lobbying groups.
People are still blaming the current economic woes in Ontario on Mike Harris because Canadians refuse to accept any consequences for their voting patterns.
There’s no fix for this short of a military-style coup and a complete re-construction of Canadian society, Pinochet-style. And that ain’t going to happen. Canada is over. Get out while you can.
