The Children Are Our Future

And that’s why I’m shopping online for the best cold weather survival tents.

Students tend to turn to ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence tool, when faced with increased academic workload and time constraints, according to new research published in the International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education. The study also reveals a concerning trend: reliance on ChatGPT is linked to procrastination, memory loss, and a decline in academic performance. These findings shed light on the role of generative AI in education, suggesting both its widespread use and potential drawbacks.

  1. Might as well just let the Chat take over the world. No point in learning anything if Chat supplies the answers (too bad if the answers aren’t always right or are biased.)

I believe math skills took a bit of a dive when calculators were introduced for the masses, and spell check degraded spelling and grammar skills.

Let’s all get the Musk neural implants, use Apple Vision Pro, and live our lives in ignorant bliss!

    1. l hope and believe Musk is seeking the benefits of implants to for instance open a huge line of communication with a paralyzed blind deaf mute who if nevertheless fully lucid.

l leave it up to others to specialize in the downside of yet another of 10s thousands of new technologies.

    2. Just remember that the answers LLMs give are statistically correct, and may be factually correct as well.

    1. Even Doug Ford thinks they’re nuts:

“Let’s focus on math, reading and writing. That is what we need to do, put all the resources into the kids,” he said. “What are they spending lawyers fees to go after these massive companies that have endless cash to fight this? Let’s focus on the kids, not this other nonsense that they are looking to fight in court.”

I don’t often agreed with Doug but even a stopped clock…

      1. He’s right, but he knows the answer to his own question: What are they spending lawyers fees (for) to go after these massive companies …

Because they want some other place to point the finger for their failure to educate. And why is it like that? Because successive governments, including this one, have lacked the courage and honesty to tackle the problems: woke schoolboards and teachers unions.

But then again, parents (voters) have been putting up with it for years without much concern. Just like our health system.

  2. l maxed out at 3 full time courses in university.
which dovetailed nicely with the fact l was raising a family, working full time and most of the time maxed out at ONE course at any moment.
l met one kid a Brock taking SIX courses. he was in out comp sci group project team.
it was fun juggling my course load scrambling and pleading with the registrar to allow prerequisites that l had to substitute for the ones indicated for additional courses l needed.
thru it all however, over the course (pun intended) from 74 to 95 l did not take a *single* unnecessary or redundant course and came away with 2 Bachelor degrees out of a total 20 full time credits.
due for example where l could take a poli sci elective l did, they then went on the satisfy the requirements for that degree.

l would never survive that long now. with my autism l would be committing microaggressions hourly and get run out on a rail.

Whats the problem here, Gen Z will have their “helicopter parents” provide them room & board until they’re well into retirement age and then leave them the house and whatever remains.

Gen Z can always cap their parents with some MAID before the nest-egg runs out, and Universal Basic Income can always provide the rest.

    1. The greater $$ the nest egg … the more “eligible” you become for the MAIDing process. You think “roofies” are a problem at the bars and clubs … lookout for the arsenic in your tomato soup. Best keep some test strips handy …

      1. Wonder what MAID is doing to life insurance companies? The counts are way up and increasing, while suicide is only excluded in the first two policy years (and suicide is hard to prove)!

It’s clearly not good on the life side, but helpful on the pension side (for older MAIDS).

        1. steve h, just had a comment vanish into the ether again. Of well, the comment basically asked what insurance companies will do now that thousands of people are committing suicide with medical help, the proof is there. I would think that will change the equation.

  4. I doubt there’s a practical way to put the AI assisted genie back in the bottle. Since I preferred math and science, I would have appreciated having AI to take some of the time-consuming drudgery out of mostly pointless essay writing.

As to procrastination and memory loss, I think teachers will have to put more emphasis on class presentations, quizzes and exams instead of essays. It’s impossible to fake knowledge, procrastinate or use ChatGPT during an examination in class. Likewise, I remember having to memorize and recite poetry and literary passages in high school English classes and memorize the multiplication table and the first couple lines of the periodic table in math and science classes. Education should be able to adapt to the technological challenges of the day.

    1. Using a responsive computer program is no different than typing a question to any other computer search engine. The info received will reflect the programing and whether or not there is an agenda.

  5. If you put your tent that close to the campfire you’re going to be online shopping for tents from wet sleeping bags.

  6. I’m not a major Trek fan, but it seems to me Captain Kirk encountered societies being run by this type of tech. Fortunately, he fought somebody, or made out with a babe, and that fixed everything. They warped away, chuckling.

    1. Remember all those times we’ve been canoe tripping in the back wilderness and chatted about the fishing with a bunch of black guys on the portage?

      1. Black folk never venture far from Oakland or Baltimore. Now … OTOH every single time I venture into the high sierra … I encounter many “Mexicans” (pick your Central American country) who are tending their illegal weed crops. But they prefer more permanent wood shacks with corrugated metal roof
