Something is Very Wrong on Canada’s Left Coast

Historians may very well look back at 2023-2024 as the point in time when citizens in Western countries finally woke up to the fact that the people in charge of running their lives are incompetent, feckless, and possibly even corrupt. How else to explain what’s happening in B.C.:

Alarm bells are ringing about B.C.’s electricity supply and grid reliability at the same time that the province is slowly choking off access to natural gas heating.

B.C.’s electrical supply is “at risk of shortfall” in extreme conditions, such as a deep freeze, according to a recent report from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.

The annual report, which did not recognize B.C. as an at-risk area in its previous edition, notes “unserved energy risks increase in 2026 as forecasted demand increases and natural-gas-fired generation retires.”

“That should be a wake up call, and should shake us out of our complacency that we have enough electricity to meet all of our potential desires, whether it’s electrification of vehicles, industry or home heating,” said Barry Penner, a former B.C. cabinet minister now with Resource Works, a nonprofit that advocates for responsible resource development.

    1. I don’t think copper is the only mineral with a likely production gap (in connection with electrification).

    1. I saw that in a car’s rear window, (a mock up license plate), in Vancouver circa 1997. Always loved it.

      1. But yet people still voted them in again and again. Elections have consequences. This is one messed up province but people are milling about the poop deck watching the ship go down.

        1. Greg – Unfortunately, the large concentration of urban population in the southwest corner of the province is where the NDP has its strength. The rest of the province has traditionally been rather ignored by the government, except as a source of revenue (essentially from resources). It will take serious electricity shortages in the Vancouver area (including Surrey and somewhat up the Fraser Valley) before the government even begins to think of changing its strategy.

    2. Got a nice ring to it, that – rhythm as well as rhyme.

Great for a chant during a “peaceful” anti-NDP protest.

  1. The sheeple aren’t paying attention and I don’t care if they freeze and get stacked up like cordwood.
    I really don’t give a shit.

    1. The area affected is in the non-NDP part of the province. They did notice, at least as much as Canadians ever do. In fact, even the Vancouver Sun reported on the decision, and the premier and cabinet’s apparent disinclination to intervene.

The provincial government has almost no interest in areas outside the lower mainland and the island, and really don’t care if their decisions cause those people pain. I’m not sure its even political retribution, more that those people are simply beneath notice.

      1. Your comment is only partially correct. Villifying natural gas as a heat source extends to many woke jurisdictions.
To the extent that I follow the bought-and-paid-for-canaduh news, which is very little, I seem to remember the morons in Nanaimo (a rock solid NDP-NFG town), Saanich (Elizabeth May, Green MP) and Victoria (infested with left wing public servants and UVic types) voted to veto natural gas heating in new build homes. Their dopey understanding of green politics will punish even supporters, and most BC residents are stupid enough to accept this. Vancouver Island exists by a very tenuous power line from the mainland, their policies could very well overload this link in the near future.

      2. Yep…NE BC – an area ripe for inclusion of the soon to be Country of Buffalo.

The Lower MAO land is a virtual cesspool of Fags, Drags, ChiComs, Eco-Imbeciles, Legal Drugs & Woke Nazified asshole “ndp” politicians.

Who in their right mind would want that cesspool added to their Voting registry..??

Best thing for YVR Island and the lower MAOland would be a 9.7 on the Richter Scale followed by a 150′ Tsunami…. A Natural Cleansing if you will.

Sorry, but I will shed no tears

        1. As an aside
Lower MaoLanders are receiving PRECISELY what they voted for for the past 4-5 Decades.

          Tough Shitski kiddies…

Zero Sympathy and don’t even think of “emigrating” to Alberta. You all can stay the F right where you made yer bed. Better buy some more blankets….hmm?

  2. The CLEAN_BC program is what is driving the removal of natural gas, and the shortfalls of power. Now, take a look at the disclaimer you will find on their official website:

IOW…we can put whatever information we want on this official government website, and if you act on our recommendations and lose your livelihood and/or income (even if we decide tomorrow to do a complete 180 degree turn on said information)….well then, tough nouggies….we have no responsibility obligations to the residents of BC…despite our pledge to the contrary upon taking on our government positions. We are Teflon. Deal with it.

    1. Stockpile guns, ammo and food if you live in a rural area in the modern West. Train regularly – the lives of your lived ones depend on it. Keep fit, and workout like you are in the infantry. Because one day, you may wake up to find you are.

Murphy’s Law: I’d rather prep and be laughed at, than not prep and be a victim.

      1. lm not clear on the guns and ammo thing. are we shooting game or intruders?
all l know l have an instinctive good aim but its been a while since l popped of that ruger 45 semi. my aim with that pc was the worst best was 22 rifle
l might not be the best at running things but lm a helluva tech and tools kind.
its the small groups going to pull thru if anyone. no big constant drain on resources but the overlapping areas of expertise got it all covered.

    2. Al Gore will never see any more snow in his lifetime. Did he die?

2 inches per hour -36 below zero.
Burning another 1000 page Climate book,
      Warm for 2 hours.

    3. “… until they stop voting Liberal.” You are much too forgiving. The ill consequences of their stupid voting, inflicted on us all, will tend to last much longer even after their stupid voting stops (which probably won’t stop.)

  3. The NDP is a pure example of watermelon politics. It has now transformed from blue collar unions which have been decimated under them to white collar unions, academics, and “green” urban metrosexuals. Economic and cultural vandalism is their trade. BC enjoys tag team socialist governance as the BC United aren’t that different.

  4. In the 1990s, BC Gas sent out a flyer saying “Good News About Your Gas Bill!”
It went on to say that because of international market conditions, they were paying less per m^3.
Then it went on to say that they were amortizing gas bills to make it easier on consumers.
Finally, they went on to say that as a result of the amortization of the gas bills, most consumers can expect to pay slightly more per annum.
The “Good News” was that they were paying less and charging more.
They were so happy that they sent out a flyer.

  5. “Historians” will do as they’re told. I know two university grad school future “historians” and both are far left extremists – you could not find two people who are more perfect caricatures of woke mental illness – and they wear it like a badge of honour, they know they are better than you.

  6. I read that Alberta is going to have 2700MWs of new natural gas electricity plants coming online this year. Since Alberta and Saskatchewan seem to have decided to ignore the Trudeau liberal-NDP government’s royal edicts about abandoning reliable baseload natural gas electricity plants, perhaps building even more will reap a good return on investment when BC is forced to import electricity to avoid the inevitable renewable energy grid collapse? I imagine electricity trading is quite profitable when a province has to either import power or go into a full blackouts or rolling blackouts.

Once the federal Liberal government gets booted out, Alberta and Saskatchewan should build/approve everything they need in the energy, manufacturing and mining industries before the rest of Canada votes in another Liberal government.

“the best time to plant a tree was 30 years ago, the second best time is now”

    1. The best thing to do to replace reliable baseline natural gas electricity plants is reliable baseline nuclear plants. Save the hydrocarbons for useful things like straws, etc.

BC is likely too seismically unstable for nukes so Alberta can build them and export the power to BC

      1. I’m in favor of all forms or reliable, affordable baseload and peak power sources – hydro, natgas, nuclear, co-gen, coal (my least favorite) – whatever makes the most sense given terrain, infrastructure and available fuel. If the rest of Canada refused to become an energy superpower country, that shouldn’t stop Alberta and Saskatchewan from becoming energy superpower provinces.

        1. Coal is wonderful. Scrubbing technology has been a game changer. Our infrastructure is set up to heat with gas (remember blue flame, green future marketing campaign?) and generate power with coal. All power lines, etc in place already. So, we are stupidly using gas to generate power, and eventually will need to haul coal around to heat houses. H

    2. 1000%
      Agree with your comment LC.

This 6 mo moratorium on Renewables should become a PERMANENT BAN and one with provisions to RE-start our Coal industry, and Completely remove the rotten blight of EVERY Wind turbine in Ab – Use our Equalization $$$ for that.

Then Have them all shipped to Stevan Guibeault care of the HOC….Collect.

      Time to play hardball…Danielle Smith.

  7. I don’t think copper is the only mineral with a likely production gap (in connection with electrification).

  8. If one scrolls to the very bottom of this posted article, he or she will find a number of “opinion” buttons to register one’s view of BC running out of electricity. The “angry” button is far ahead, and I clicked this button.

  9. Something wrong with BC.
    Unrelated to energy.
Finally learned the reason the court overturned the ban on drug use near children, in parks and in certain public buildings. Evidently drug overdoses are more frequent when the druggies are alone; lonely.

    1. The court said if the druggies couldn’t shoot up in parks, school yards and playgrounds they would do it in hiding places where no-one else can see them and the potential for overdose increases substantially.

Apparently the judge thinks the only public places in BC are parks, school yards and playgrounds.

      This province is toast.

  10. Anyone in BC with more than half a brain always knew the NDP energy policy was suicidal. The NDP still don’t realize it, which tells you how much brain power they have.

    1. Indeed. And not just the NDP. Really, what’s the difference between voting for turdo, singhalong, or the likes of blubber douggie?

  11. British Columbia is paying the long overdue price of endless, silly delays on building the Site C hydraulic generating station. These delays are the entire reason why the project cost doubled to more than $16 billion. This is exactly the same reason for cost overrun that the Darlington nuclear project experienced in Ontario in the 1980s. Like Darlington, most of the cost delays were purely political, inflicted by whatever party happened to be in power at the time.

So as a result of Site C being delayed, and Justatwit’s huge ballooning of immigration, BC Hydro needs to build a lot of gas-fired power capacity to compensate for it being late. So if you want someone to blame, start with the useless f****r John Horgan. He’s trying to blame the costs and delays on Covid-19. But the project would have been finished before then if he hadn’t started delaying things in 2017.

Same thing in Ontario. Darlington was late because of delays principally imposed by the morons David Peterson and Bob Rae.

BC EARNED this punishment for their stupidity in voting for Horgan.

    1. Justatwit’s huge ballooning of immigration

Here’s a stat just gleaned from Brad at CAP for Canada.
Pre-charter, immigrants were 90% Europe sourced.
      Post-charter, 90% third world.

      1. True but it’s a side issue to the stunning incompetence of the BC government under Horgan in doing basic project management.

  12. This gets even better. Back in 2017, we drove I-84 along the Columbia. Every dam along the river was dumping water over the spillways- dumping electricity and cash- while hundreds of giant fans spun in the wind of Eastern Oregon’s high desert. Those wind farms were financed by the Bonneville Power Authority, which runs the dams on the Columbia. When it’s short of power, BC buys it from the those dams on the Lower Columbia.
Here’s where it gets better. The US federal government has announced a plan to eliminate four dams on the Lower Snake River that produce a combined output of 3000 MW. One big impact will be the reduced availability of that power from Montana to the coast, meaning the pool that Western Canada draws from is reduced by that much.
    Fun, eh kids?

    1. During the worst part of the Green Energy Act in Ontario, the IESO was having to curtail nuclear power production or sell wind generation at LESS than production cost paid to the producers to export it to US jurisdictions that had to get them to take it off Ontario’s hands.

This stupidity is most of the reason that the Liberal Party of Ontario has been reduced to non-party status in the past two provincial elections.

      1. very very correct assessment. my snarky nickname for it was ‘kathleen wynnedfarm’
they were however well on their way to energy madness with dolt mcguilty.

      2. And the Architect of the GREEN ENERGY ACT..??

        Gerald M. Butts
One of the many “boys” the Rockefellers Owned, Maurice Strong was one as well, and Im betting Justin & Alexandre Trudeau as well.

  13. I think.the people who vote for them are further out on the branches. The ones operating the saws are better placed to see when their folly has brought the breaking point and they may be able jump to the safer side.

  14. “…people in charge of running their lives are incompetent, feckless, and possibly even corrupt. How else to explain what’s happening in B.C.?”

    You forgot “Malevolent.”

  15. Politicians and your next-door neighbour really have no business messing in your energy needs.. It like a political flesh eating disease.. Cancer.. Lets F@#$ OVER everybody who is not us and expect good things to happen?..

This top down.. This upper class famine will end in civil disobedience and violence.. Is that the plan?.. I will not sit in the dark any more than fall into poverty to appease your delusions..

The energy Spanish Inquisition needs to stop..
