A powerful earthquake struck central Japan on Monday, triggering warnings for residents to evacuate some areas on its west coast, destroying buildings, knocking out power to thousands of homes and disrupting travel to the region.
The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 triggered waves of around 1 metre along parts of the Sea of Japan coast, with authorities saying larger waves could follow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama. A major tsunami warning – the first since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan – was initially issued for Ishikawa but later downgraded.

No Joe, it’s “Godzirra”!
Climate change is nonsense.
Kaiju season begins!
Oof…The videos are scary. I’ve personally never experienced one but I’ve been told by someone who lived in California that… “they’re a little unnerving”.
Brian is the master of understatements
Volcano in Iceland, earth quake in Japan, next climate disaster will most likely be Banana trees growing here in southern Ontario.
And Japan breaks out of the gate like a rocket.. The rest of the world is jealous of their media hogging suffering..
But would it make sex funner if the timing was right?
I’ve experienced earthquakes throughout ALL my 68 years of life. No two are alike. Small ones are … interesting, and almost welcome as we are told they reduce the build-up of seismic potential. Some are sudden jolting shocks … some are long rolling movements. Some are short duration … some seem to go on frighteningly “forever”. The long-duration ones can actually get stronger over time and are truly frightening.
I have still been lucky to have never been too close to the epicenter of the real big ones. But even at that … the Loma Prieta was a hell of a shake 50 miles from the epicenter.
