  1. But surely if they try renting again it will be better? Kinda like, this time we’ll have perfect communism.

Don’t they have to return their rentals fully charged?

    1. It’s been my experience with lithium batteries that sometimes they discharge even if they’re not in use. I don’t know if anyone else has had that experience, or if this is a feature with lithium batteries.

      1. Lithium-ion cells do self-discharge, but I note that I have stored charged cells in a drawer for years, taken them out, and used them without recharging.

The most common reason for good condition cells to discharge quickly is because . . . they are in use. “Off” doesn’t mean off anymore. In many devices, such as EVs, the only way to turn the device off is to remove the cells.

Yes, they have a pretty low rate of self-discharge (at least the decent quality ones). All batteries will eventually lose their charge, just at different rates.

  2. Tony, of YouTube’s Uncle Tony’s garage predicts the golden age of car mechanics is in the near future. Because of combinations of factors including the deceit of electric and the utter over engineered with electronic junk and cheap plastic, conventional gas vehicles which are perfectly good looking and structurally sound are now send to an early grave because they are nightmares too expensive to “restore” in their current engineered form.
The future “hot rodders” will not be guys who modify for speed but guys who can revive cars by bypassing electronics and machining steel component replacement.
    Cuban lifestyle here we come.

  3. A coworker and I were in Germany a couple months ago and he rented an electric car for the 5 days we were there. Nice car and no issues until the morning we were flying out and needing to charge it back up before returning it. We left in plenty of time to charge before heading to the airport, unfortunately our ability to get it charged failed. First two charging locations we found were single stations and occupied. Next station we found an open charger but it turned out to be out of order after several failed attempts to get it to work. Fourth attempt found us unable to get over to the station due to lane restrictions and the fifth and final attempt had us driving in circles trying to access the lot before giving up in frustration and heading to the airport. Insult to injury was us passing several highly accessible and available gas stations on our journey to find an open, useable charger. He did agree in the end the electric car option was not wise and next time It will be a gas or diesel rental. Thankfully our company picked up the punishing fee for taking it back not charged.

  4. This is the Biden economic plan of “Build Back Backward”. They start with subsidizing the electric car purchase. Then they subsidize more battery plants. Then they increase the number of charging stations. Then they upgrade the electrical grid. Then they invest in the supply chain which makes the whole thing happen in the first place. Then they do a cost/benefit analysis of the whole system.

  5. Are you still a little boy with a shiny red car fetish? Get over it, already!

Obviously, your enabling co-worker also lacks assertiveness and good sense. I would have told him that I was not going on the trip in a “experimental” rental car with minimal supportive infrastructure and preferred to spend zero time at charging stations.

The company is stupid too, as customers are now paying for their stupidity.

  6. Was told by a service station attendant on Wawa Ontario that all of the EV vehicles that come in for a charge arrived by tow truck.

  7. Be kind rewind?.. A low rent EV road trip is dumb.. Are you going to your event or holiday or planning your green adventure?.. You can’t have both :).. 68 Km and you are down for a 45 minute siesta?.. Oh boy I can play with my smartphone or maybe myself :)..

Or you can spend 3 minutes tanking up for 500 Km and get on with the job.. And a job it is.. Idiots..

  8. Let us see now.

“City of Edmonton’s electric bus fleet plagued with issues, over half not in service”
    https://globalnews.ca/news/10112257/edmontons-electric-bus-fleet-proterra-issues/

…. The city paid more than $1 million for each bus and ordered 60 from U.S.-based manufacturing company Proterra….
The company that made the buses and the maintenance, apparently, are no more.

Though the socialist mayoress of Calgary wants to buy a fleet of them.

“Calgary Transit will purchase 259 new electric buses after the federal government upped its funding commitment for the project to nearly $500 million. On Monday, the feds announced an additional $325 million, building off a previous $165-million pledge, for the electrification of Calgary’s transit buses.”

    How can you fix stupid?
    I ask.

    1. You can’t fix stupid when there are kickbacks, graft, and vote buying at stake, Vito. To a politician, turning down the opportunity to spend $millions, where a portion always sticks to their fingers, is stupid.

It’s all about the spending and has nothing to do with whether or not any project is viable or makes a lick of sense.

  9. EV fans. Pro tip for easy charging. Use the Google Map locations off any exit that is on “MLK Boulevard/Ave”. Always a open charger. And, friendly people to assist you.

  10. Last summer I was in Vegas and wanted to rent a car. Since I was staying downtown it was easy to go from hotel to hotel to compare prices. Budget offered the lowest price but it was for an EV; said no. I went with a slightly more expensive gas model from Enterprise. The manager at the desk recommended reserving online to save a little more money. We went to the west rim of the Grand Canyon on 2/3rds of a tank.
