I wonder who is behind all the anti-AI site rallies in Canada?
Who benefits with the west not building out AI sites?
China.
Western Canada — and in particular the conservative governments in Alberta and Saskatchewan — should invite AI centers in — and leave the anti-economy Luddites in the rest of Canada to wallow in their corript mismanagement. Alberta and Saskatchewan have the energy to harness AI operations. Especially now, with our national economy stagnant and in a precarious position, the two conservative provinces have to seize opportunities.
When I lived in Regina earlier this year, the Premier announced the building of a large AI Data Centre south of Regina. The big outcry was about the increase required in electrical generation and transmission to supply the center. Now that I am living in Ottawa, I hear very little about SK News except when I come to this site each morning.
On another topic, I worked with a great structural engineer back in the late 1970’s/early 80’s who had a great Dachshund business partner whom he named “Rommel, the Desert Fox”. Rommel was a good boy who helped his master faithfully.
Ontario will allow the building of data centers, just not in a way that adversely affects residents. There is a pattern of rising electricity rates and tainted ground water or water shortages around data centers.
Also, Alberta and Saskatchewan don’t yet have the capacity for a large number of data centers without adversely affects their residents. I agree with you that Canada needs it’s own data centers, but like any other resource intensive project, it needs to be planned out properly.
Ontario got their ass bit on battery plants that went nowhere and are now in risk avoidance mode. 4 of the 5 Great Lakes and many large rivers. Existing and expanding nuclear energy sites. Population sites all along the lakes for employment. The potential is there to encourage sites. But Ontario will not do it.
Ontario is also on the Indigenous leash and will tie themselves in knots to give them everything and more. If Ontario gets a Lib or NDP gov’t this election, they’ll try to follow BC’s lead as quick as they can (personal opinion, but probably a consideration for any entity considering Ontario).
Even BESS sites in Ottawa are jumping through NIMBY hoops to get built.
I don’t see any large, capable corporation even considering Ontario. Too expensive and too long term to even get a shovel in the ground.
Alberta and Saskatchewan have the energy to harness AI operations.
Where? Come winter, we’re within about 3 watts of crashing the entire grid a number of times during the season. I’m open minded to new development, but we need to make sure that the general public’s infrastructure is sufficient first. It’s not.
I know! More solar panels & bird & bat slicers.
I’m pretty sure a Tesla could beat both as well.

A small landscaping company in Ottawa has $70,000 in tools and a trailer stolen overnight. The landscapes should have had an electronic tag built into the trailer, to be sure. But the incident points to the cruelty of thieves in this day and age.
During the summers in high school and university, I was the principal sawman on a home construction
This was all 50 some years ago. But the lumber pile (or two piles) were typically delivered the day before, or even one or two days earlier. The piles were tightly banded together, but it would have been easy for thieves to cut the bands and steal the lumber. This was during the 1960s, but lumber was ccomparatively expensive even back then, and represented a considerable part of the house. I can’t recall even our crew discussing the possibility of potential lumber theft. I’m not sure about goes on now. But this kind of theft hurts working men.
Contractor utility trailers & pickup trucks get broken into regularly around here. One of the local guys had a 16′ trailer broken into, all the tools stolen, he replaced the entirety & two weeks later was hit again.
In a world where one man’s terrorist is another man’s leader, the actors at Marvel are seeking the release of the Palestinian leader Barghouti.

“A senior member of Fatah, he [Barghouti] was arrested by Israeli forces in 2002 during the Second Intifada. In 2004, an Israeli court sentenced him to five life terms plus an additional 40 years after convicting him over attacks that killed five people.”
