What would we do without research?
In 1972, British psychologist Gerald Russell treated a woman with an unusual eating disorder involving binging and purging. Over the next 7 years, he saw a further 30 woman presenting with the same condition.
In 1979, he wrote a paper published in Psychological Medicine, in which he gave it the name bulimia nervosa. The condition was included in the DSM-III the following year. Then something remarkable happened. The illness swept the globe like wildfire affecting an estimated 30 million people by the mid-1990s, the majority of whom were teenage girls and young women.
The explanation for this rapid spread is what philosopher Ian Hacking calls ‘semantic contagion’ – how the process of naming and describing a condition creates the means by which the condition spreads. The epidemic of multiple-personality disorder in the 90s was spread this way Bulimia entered the lexicon via women’s magazines such as Mademoiselle and Better Homes and Gardens, which ran stories about this new and worrying disorder affecting women and girls. Multiple studies demonstrate the media’s culpability in the spread of social contagions.

I guess the same applies to trans mania now
“I guess the same applies to trans mania now”
100%. The takeaway here appears to be that the bulk of humanity is gullible & stupid easily prone to manipulation.
I believe the 75-80% of people kind that fell for the covid hoax proves that point.
I recall that it was Voltaire who said:
“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”
Just look at the last century or so.
Bulimia and trans mania seem to mainly occur in women.
Yup, I wonder why. And I mean that, I truly wonder why, I wasn’t snarking
Bulimia does but does trans? There seems to be a lot more men pretending to be women, than women pretending to be men. Or maybe not, maybe the men are just more noticeable?
The men are more noticeable, and more obnoxious. Many doing it just for access to traditionally female only domains for their own sexual gratification.
However, not all. I know at least one person that was at least transvestite before it became fashionable. He did not push it in people’s faces, didn’t insist on being referred to as female. Quite different from the rabid personalities being pushed in our faces today.
A complacent society is a society that has too much time on its hands and too many charlatans milking it, (at both ends) for all its worth.
Never mind the “age of aquarius” ….. we are now in the ‘age of hysteria’
Kinda like e-bikes, lawn darts, drunk drivers and cigarette vending machines.
The west is composed mainly of cowards of one sort or another, ready to jump into tyranny so they can feel protected from their little pet phobias.
We used to have an expression for this phenomenon, “monkey see, monkey do”. It seems to find fertile demographics in those disposed to drawing attention to themselves and then sanctified by busybodies out to defend their pathologies from criticism or neglect.
Same thing with autism and the rise of Spectrum Bullies.
In today’s society of easy notoriety, many people are desperate for attention. Of any kind. Being stupid is an ugly option and being especially smart and requires effot. or talented is too hard. A medical issue is easy and relatively acceptable. It’s also why there are way more villans than heros.
Same with ADHD. Went from unheard of to a few kids in class by the mid 90’s, to an entire generation of crazy tweaker young adults.
ADHD, originally was confined to children who actually had real disorders due to birth trauma and/or genetics. Later, it was used to cover a wide range of behavioral problems. It is so comforting for parents to have an ADHD problem vs. raising a brat.
But the precursor to all of this was the spread of COD: Chronic Ovine Disorder.
Fibromyalgia. Going from never heard of it and then by the 00’s I was working with a dozen women all suffering from it.
lazy ass disease
Young people, and young women in particular, are extremely open to suggestion and pop trends. They will do whatever they can to rebel against their parents, or their society, and garner attention and approval from others, especially their peers.
Kinda like the way all the brain dead sheep sport Ukrainian flags now?
What will our uncontrollable colon commentor take up after Ukraine is conquered by Russia? Wanna take any guesses? I’m going for him turning into her.
Your Ukrainian flag won’t get you into heaven anymore
It’s already overcrowded from your dirty little war
And Jesus don’t like killing no mater what the reason’s for
and your Ukrainian flag won’t get you into heaven anymore.
Pace John Prine.
Many decades ago, that would be 10’s of years for those in Burkina Faso, a wise guy that know things said in an scientific article that every one human has diagnosable psycho malady.
Apparently there are kind, sort to say run of the mill aberration in human psyche that are of no real consequence.
The thing is, as soon as a psycho doctor gets hold of you, you are basically doomed. The psycho doctor will find many different conditions that may be wrong with you, though those don’t need to be treated.
Like some are compelled to pick on their nose, some hate katlics with a zeal that may be a problem, some think they are women having a penis and other think they are men while having none, some think that they are fat while being skinny.
Left to their own devices, they may notice nobody pays attention and may just drop it.
Lou Reed, The Kinks, Rockey Horror, (heh- Mrs. Doubtfire.)..
I think this brand of sickness has been around for a long time. They just reclassified a mental problem in order to offer lucrative medical snake oil procedures. Destigmatization has had the greatest effect here. I suspect the other noted syndromes had deeper origins as well. The classifications are indicative of a trend not vice versa.
I’ve always believed that there is a psychological facet attached to most diseases. A situation where you focus on your symptoms (especially when they are uncomfortable) has a response of escalating the problem. And while the physical malady may not have changed in any fashion, your brain would tell you otherwise if that is where your focus is.
It’s the ole lying down on a bed of nails philosophy. Some people can actually do that because they can train their mind to focus on something altogether different. It’s why many physical injuries and diseases ease with sleep and profound rest. Your mind isn’t occupied in the same way.
From a perspective of this article, however, it’s an all to prevalent mentality found mostly on the left. Victimization. They love to wear that role. And, sometimes the lengths they will go to in order to wear that badge is mind boggling (and self-destructive…which only emphasizes the desired victim role). I used to think the word “trendy” was rather neutral. But, now I see it as purely negative. Trends are like cultures. Some are OK…but what if a culture is made up of a bunch of assholes.
“We are all individuals here”
“But I’m not”.
Victimhood.
A friend calls all this BS “First World Problems”..
If you are not living a life of luxury and indulgence, you have no time to be Chicken Little.
Or as an alternate;”Stampede…Everybody’s doing it”.
Most of these “long Suffering” Victims are desperate for attention, any attention at all.
I wonder if being allergic to gluten falls under this category. Or was it just misdiagnosed previously? It went from “never heard of it” to seemingly 1 in 3 people suffering from it.
Everyone now has allergies too; and diabetes and high blood pressure, keeping the pharma and special foods businesses happy.
Go to the doctor and you will have high blood pressure and high cholesterol.. A do something shotgun approach to healthcare.. Are my levels in the danger zone?.. No..
Your blood pressure is all over the place all day long and 140/80 is the gold standard for everybody?.. 25 years old or 55.. Seems unrealistic and designed to push drugs.. Cholesterol?.. I eat a healthy diet.. Near zero takeout and I choke down the greens and salads that “I’m told” are good for me.. Yet I’m slightly high.. Here are some pills.. When I ask why the doctor says my body makes cholesterol out of thin air and it has nothing to do with diet.. The magic blood test said so..
Go for the Full Monty physical exam.. Bum and blood and they will float the pills.. and find a reason to further rattle you with a MRI and a second blood test.. I’m starting to think the only way to disengage is take the pills..
And they wonder why I have slightly high blood pressure..
