Here’s the obvious thing… there isn’t a lot of clamour from women to go into trucking, because the population of “women truckers” is already in the industry, because if you want to be a trucker as a woman, most companies will go out of their way to hire you and train you, since they want to show how diverse they are.
Unfortunately, the government doesn’t understand that women, in general, don’t want to be truckers, because the job is physical, the hours suck, and you are at the mercy of an idiot computer program that will run you out of hours even if you are sitting still and not earning.
I see Lindsay Shepherd has come a long way since the Wilford Laurier University days.
A good friend of ours stopped by on the weekend. He owns a technology company in the Toronto area. The company takes part in a co-op program for students in the tech sector receiving a grant from the government to do so. The grant specifically states that BIPOCs receive $7,000 and whites (males only I believe) only receive $5,000.
Because there haven’t been enough Humboldt type stories…..
Just be a white male who self-identifies as a woman. What can they do about it?
I know only a couple women truckers and they are tough women. The majority of women are not strong enough to open the hood of a transport truck and do a proper circle check before going on the road. A driver is required to tie down their own load in many cases and that takes exceptional strength that doesn’t come with a mani/pedi. Family of mine had a trucking company and they joke today that they could never higher most of our population now because it would a safety issue.
