    1. The PGA harangs the golfers for going after the big bucks, then the imams turn the cash hose on PGA.. “we are all musslims now”. I can see why the golfers are pissy.

    3. I don’t do the Twitter thing, and I’m damned well not a golfer. But I did a web search for “PGA Saudi” and it started to make sense.

  9. Ha. All those golfers that turned down huge payouts from Saudi to stay loyal to the PGA only to have the PGA thank them by taking a huge payout for themselves. Did they really think the PGA was going to return that same loyalty?

    1. Sorry to say … but Rory McIlroy looks like a real chump today … he shot off his big mouth and reputation … and got hosed. Not to mention he’s struggling on the course.

    So he did something about it.

    And proved it.

    2. When the LIV split off a year ago, I would have thought Ward was right – the purses weren’t a fair share of the revenue. To minimize others joining LIV, the PGA Tour (the PGA is a separate entity that the Tour split from in the late 1960s) raised purses of tour events substantially. Today I wonder if they actually could afford to do so. That would explain the sudden merger.

  13. A lot of people associated with golf were quite surprised to hear about this shared venture. The only explanation that makes sense is perhaps that pending legal action was too intrusive for both parties (PGA tour and Saudis), in the discovery phase, so to avoid that, some sort of face-saving merger. I don’t know how much merger is actually going to happen. There may be some symbolic co-operation but whether the banished LIV guys are allowed back into any PGA events other than majors, remains to be seen. It may not work out quite as advertised. We shall see.

    One point I would add, there is a lot of talk about Saudi “sportswashing” and what a terrible bunch of people they are, but my take is that there are factions within upper levels of Saudi society and these sporting ventures (besides LIV golf, such ventures as ownership of Newcastle United in the premier league) may represent a more pro-western or enlightened group and not the religious fundamentalists. Also just because somebody says Saudi Arabia “planned 9-11” does not make it so. Saudi citizen Osama bin Laden planned 9-11. Did FDR plan the Mafia? No but perhaps he could have leaned harder on the crooks. Same thing applies here. Despite all the chest thumping about who planned 9-11, the list of possible candidates is longer than some may think.
