Y2Kyoto: #SKExit

If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.

Earlier this month, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said the federal government’s goal for net-zero emissions wasn’t realistic.

He doubled down on that statement Tuesday while announcing the province’s plans for electricity generation to 2035 and beyond.

“The federal government’s standards for zero emissions electrical generation by 2035 are unrealistic and unaffordable,” Moe said in a media release. “They mean SaskPower rates would more than double and we may not have enough generation to keep the lights on.

“I’m not going to let that happen.”

That which can be ignored no longer: Alberta’s wind power drops to 2 megawatts out of 3618 on Friday, the lowest level we’ve seen yet

  1. Why is SaskPower continuing to sink capital into new installations with such dismal prospects of power production? Who pays for them?

    1. Moe was pretty clear.

“That means the government plans to use existing assets like natural gas plants until the end of their lives. Saskatchewan also will keep examining the use of small modular reactors and expanding other power sources such as wind and solar.”

All generating stations in Saskatchewan are owned by SaskPower. What it will be turning to is nuclear power. It may be examining wind/solar, but they’ve already failed as reliable power sources. That’s what “examining” means in this context.

      1. “will keep examining” – those are weasel words.

Moe is just fishing for federal dollars. He’ll let it happen. It might take some sort of federal transfer or “investment”, but Moe will roll over exactly as he did with vaccine mandates and immunization papers. In the end SK ratepayers will be paying double for electricity, which might be the point of the press release. To telegraph to people approximately how much more we will be paying the near future.

  2. Coverage of government plans for emissions reduction continues to lack vital and essential discussion of the true purpose of these programs. “Net zero” is a meaningless goal without a discussion of the costs and the benefits. Reporters and opposition parties foolishly refuse to challenge the government’s failure to justify their plans.

A parallel situation exists in the U.S.

At a recent Congressional hearing Senator Kennedy of Louisiana asked David Turk, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy a simple question: “How much will the $50 Trillion to get U.S. carbon neutral by 2035 reduce global temperatures.” Mr. Turk refused to answer the question.

This means that the U.S. government has not done the math or is deliberately keeping the public in the dark. The same situation persists in Canada with the complicity of the media.

    RealSpeak: Insane, Quixotic, unachievable. Period.

  4. The left will always overstep. It takes Canadian (and US) sheep a while, but eventually we will hit back. Unfortunately we also fall asleep easily and become complacent. A few good years under Harper and a balanced budget became “The budget will balance itself” and the turd.

  5. Not to worry greenies. At some point the “progressives” in Regina and Saskatoon will have their way and the NDP loons will find their way back into power. Then you can have all the energy policy crazy you have been missing all these years.

  6. It’s never been about saving the environment, it’s about controlling the serfs and the Fascist’s think they should have the power to nudge our thinking into their version of the “Truth”. It’s about power and control, and it ends when we hit the streets protesting the current regime and it’s merry band of fascist thugs.

  7. Can someone explain why saskpower has ((what appears to me) a make work /waste money program going on where they are moving power lines in our rural area from out in pasture land to the road allowance??
They are using the old poles too!!
In 50 years I remember only one pole that was hit by lightning in the area.
    Seems like a waste.

  8. Meh.
A simple observation, the only way Saskatchewan ,or Alberta for that matter,is going to reach “Net Zero” is if we up our emissions a 100 fold.
For we are Net Negative, all summer long as our vegetation absorbs our pitiful CO2 output and demands more, trolling those winds blowing in from Asia for “more Food”..

Like I said last time,Moe is doing this right,if the Ideologues crack,we get Modular Nuclear, which will be great(Assuming we can work it) at the expense of Eastern taxpayers.

If Trudeau and his Children’s Crusade hold true to their ideology, well the Moe has already prepared the way for an Independent West and its acceptance by his voters..
People currently trying to “save Canada” will be demanding we exit.
    Leave or freeze?
    .
    Damn sneaky fellow Premier Moe.
    I like.

  9. As long as Moe and others accept that it is necessary to eliminate CO2 (not carbon) emissions they will always be fighting a rearguard action. By accepting the frame of the green loonies they will always lose. This needs to be completely reframed. CO2 is actually necessary and important for life on the planet. Cheap and reliable energy is critical for human well being.
