  1. Vancouver Fire Rescue Services

“On Tuesday, Nov 21st, firefighters responded to the most overdoses in department history for a single day: 54.
VFRS averaged 16 overdoses/day in May and it jumped significantly lately and during income assistant week where firefighters averaged 45 overdoses/day last week.” 1/6

… there’s a few more of these to read in their thread, not posting all 6 of these

“Due to the exposure to extreme levels of human suffering, firefighters are limited to 81 shifts at firehall 2 to try and limit compassion fatigue” 5/6

    1. If we just let overdosing druggies die, the problem will eventually self-correct.

      1. And clean out the emergency rooms so average people can actually get seen in a timely matter.

The thanks you get for saving the druggies lives (and ruining their high), being kicked, punched, and spit on.

          The firefighters have some stories…

I considered that as a career once (most young guys probably have), until I found out that they really didn’t spend much time fighting fires. Paramedic work is not for me.

I worked at 2 Hall once. It was an experience, for sure. 8 Hall (Hamilton and Smithe) isn’t much better as far as overdose calls go (every day all day) but at least there aren’t several homeless druggies hanging around watching you work and waiting for you to turn your back so they can steal your tools.

On the flip side, working at 19 Hall (Trimble and 12th, serving the UBC/Point Grey area) was a joy. Nicknamed “The Country Club”, it has high vaulted ceilings decorated with kayaks, snowshoes and other outdoor stuff. Lots of parking as well, unlike 2 and 8 halls. It’s also rumored to be a ‘punishment hall’, because very little ever happens there…two or three calls per shift, sometimes one, one day *none* (you should have seen how excited they were to go out on a gas leak call, compared to the usual ‘chest pains’).

      1. That one call makes for a very long day. There’s nothing like looking at the time and thinking “holy crap there’s 30 minutes to end of day, let’s clean up and we’re out of here…”
My experence with the drug addled is minimal and I’m going to keep it that way.

The downtown Vancouver halls are so busy on certain days of the month (Welfare Wednesday, for one) that they often don’t get back to the hall between calls, and other units are transferred hall-to-hall to take their place. Craziness.

Most people forget that Trump was a Democrat for decades, and the darling of the left.

      1. He was a Democrat until he saw the Dems were moving so far left, they’re to the right of the Nazi party.

    1. And now some Democrats are proposing vote by phone.

Pretty soon US elections will be decided by scammers in India, Pakistan, and China.

Flash to California voting in 2032. “The votes are in; 1,067,231,243 votes for Swalwell as governor.”

  2. Did you see the recent story about the couple in Richmond Hill, Ontario, who rented out their basement on Airbnb — only to have the guests stop paying, refuse to leave, and stay in their home for months?

    They’ve gone to Airbnb.
    They’ve gone to the police.
    They’ve gone to the courts.

    No one can help them.

    Why?

Because under the Doug Ford PCs, Ontario’s Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) has collapsed into a system where even illegal occupants can stay for months or years while homeowners wait for a hearing.

In 2023, the LTB backlog exploded to over 53,000 unresolved cases — the largest in Ontario’s modern history. Today, the backlog is still over 41,000 cases, with families waiting months just to be heard.

Instead of fixing the LTB, the Ford PCs shut down in-person hearing centres, botched the shift to virtual hearings, and allowed backlogs to grow to unprecedented levels.

That was interesting. It is done slightly differently here in Richmond, where a guy is put on ‘frost watch’ during the winter nights and turns on the sprinklers to keep the crop from freezing. You can get a great view of the harvest from an overpass on the East-West Connector (Hwy 91).
