  2. That looks like a BART car from here in the land of utterly VACANT BART cars since COVID. Now … only the criminals and insane homeless use the cars to sleep all day. Although DC has similar-looking cars …

    I haven’t ridden BART for YEARS … and just bought my wife a very pricey UBER ride to SF to meet her cousins. No way I’d put her on BART … alone … EVER. Behold public transit. Oh … and a fire extinguisher? That’s a playtoy compared to what people carry on mass transit

    Oh! and BART is RAPIDLY going MORE Bankrupt. Half of their paltry ridership now are fare gate jumpers (its not hard on BART at all), and another quarter get FREE or subsidized tickets. Yeah … they’re gonna be coming at us for a massive sales tax increase … soon.

Was to SF 3 years ago and was eager to take my first trip on a BART train, hearing about it all my life and mistakenly believing that BART was going to be a shining example of mass transit being run well, owing to the wealth of the region and figuring mass transit would be something that maybe the progs of average intelligence there would execute flawlessly. Boy, was I wrong. The trains were filthy, bums were everywhere and the ticket machines were either broken or difficult to figure out. Major disappointment and solidified my view that SF is doomed.

        And when did that come sharply into focus for me? Right around the year 2000, I took my kids on a trip to Washington DC. Their metro system is virtually a carbon copy of BART. Same cars, same track, similar stations and equipment. But when the family and I entered our first station and sat on our first car … we were all literally DUMBFOUNDED. We thought we were in Japan. The stations were SPOTLESS clean, all the mechanism were clean and functional, the cars were spotless, nothing smelled of urine and vomit, no graffitti, the TRACKS were even spotless. We couldn’t believe it. This was how BART was supposed to be. This is what we pay 8-3/4% sales tax for

        1. The problem is cameras, In the absence of cameras the punk would be curb stomped. With cameras people are afraid they will get accused of racism and hence choose to be victims.

  11. Got out of Canada. Now in Wisconsin. Lived in a city of 24,000. It was very safe but just moved to a town of 6,600. Even better.

    Yes Dyspeptic Curmudgeon, I have read and reread John Ross’s Unintended Consequences, an excellent read. I would also refer others to the Kipling poem, The Wrath of the Awakened Saxon. At some point, the last stick will be loaded on to the Camel, and I’m buying shares in Popcorn for that event, as I’m getting a little long in the tooth to engage!
