Canada buys Ukraine $400M air-defence system that Canadian Army has been waiting for since 2012

Defence Minister Anita Anand announced Tuesday that Canada would purchase a “National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System” and associated munitions from the United States to donate to Ukraine. A NASAMS is a short- to medium-range ground-based air-defence system that protects against drone, missile and aircraft attacks. The donation will cost Canadian taxpayers approximately $406 million. Anand did not explain how the government was able to act so quickly in acquiring the air-defence system for Ukraine while a similar project for Canada’s military continued to go unfulfilled.

But her office added in a statement, “We continue to work towards the procurement of Ground-Based Air Defence Equipment for the Canadian Armed Forces — and Minister Anand is committed to getting this done, as outlined in our defence policy.”

The Canadian Army has been without an air-defence capability since 2012 and has tried over the past decade to convince governments to purchase such equipment.

They’ll defeat Putin if it means bankrupting every last Canadian.

        Don’t worry NATO’s’ army of Poles will ride to the rescue after the last Ukrainian has been de-nazified, and we’ll see if the Russian federation decides to let them live. It’s a toss up really, between common sense and ignorant bigotry and in the case of Poland, the latter will probably prevail.

        The unusual thing is that they don’t seem to care. In a non Russian nation the loss of a war would be considered a government changing event. Russia? It is Tuesday. There is something about their national/political mind set that just doesn’t react the same way we would.

        Look it up yourself – Russia loses wars. They just don’t seem to politically care.

        1. Russia is an afterbirth of Mongol empire, what would be a lost war to a civilized country is a temporary setback in a never ending campaign to spread its filth for the Siberian Mongols. That’s partly why russia needs to be dismantled.

        2. Yes, Russia has long had the advantage of being so big and so flexibly organized that it’s just about impossible to conquer. It can always keep fighting until the other side finally gives up, and it can suffer substantial losses in making peace that still don’t threaten its survival. So it can afford to lose wars. It would take some doing to impose terms on Russia so harsh as to be unacceptable to the population at large.

          I’m not sure that the Russians don’t care. But it’s the kind of thing they hold against a politician over the long run, it does not motivate them to make desperate immediate changes.

You’d think with all these impressive victories, and the Russian forces reduced to a husk, our media would be breathlessly documenting it all much like how CNN did during the Gulf War, or any preceding conflict. We have committed unaccounted for billions, weapons, and everything but our own flesh and blood to the Ukraines cause, which we’re told is our fight too.

      Shouldn’t newspapers have a daily section reserved on the front page detailing/measuring “our” progress? Why isn’t the cbc/ctv giving us nightly updates from their embedded teams? Arent Putin’s bolsheviks on the run thanks to our military and financial support of Zelensky’s brave, unflinching troops? It would be a great testimony and vindication of the righteousness and wisdom of our leaders’ unquestioning support (“no matter what!”).

      Yet there’s none of that other than staged photos, with western celebrities even! Zelensky demanding more money from congress, and press conferences from our leaders on how massively critical, existential, this mission is to the west. Much like the “pandemic”, we are being told not to question, assured there’s ample evidence, that the cause is just – “for society”, “for democracy”. But it all smells like a giant fraud is being perpetrated on us.

      1. All I can smell is intellectual laziness on your part. Start with the Minsk agreement, OHCHR reports, and OSCE reports. While you’re at it go check how Russian propaganda differs – and even contradicts itself – depending on their audience.

        Then check out the opinion of Russia in former USSR states. Funny how a bunch of them joined NATO.

Canadians need to remember that more Canadian units and regiments have been destroyed in parliament than by enemy action.

      1. Well he may be killing people in another country but also a lot in his own. Moreover a lot of people dying in another country are his people, at least 110K by now, and that is a good thing.

      1. The interesting thing is that Surovikin was the closest that it came to a competent army commanders among the Siberian Mongols. Personally he is a rapist, a torturer and a murderer. And I mean personally, as he himself has murdered, tortured and raped. So in other words a poster boy for modern (and old) russia. But he also has managed to restore discipline and implement a semi coherent strategy in the south, denying Ukrainians any chances to mount a major offensive after the russian rout from Kherson. He has also managed to tie up large numbers of Ukrainian reserves around Bahmut and while taking loses probably four times as high as Ukrainians, he prevented Ukrainians from further advancing and turned the war from one where Ukrainians clearly had the initiative to a stalemate. Strategically (not tactically or operationally) this was the best Siberians could count on.
        Now the relevant question is: given current rate of loses which side can first replace men and equipment at a rate that will allow them to build enough of an advantage to resume offensive operations? The answer isn’t clear.

    1. A token support in this case. Poland has done a lot already. But this time the word is abut a company of Leo 2A4s. Company is ten tanks, and 2A4 is the oldest operational version of the tank. I think the plan is to use them as trainers and hope more can be sent from other arsenals. Poland simply cannot afford sending more heavy armor to Ukraine without radically compromising Polish defensive capability.

    2. To add to above. If Poland will send a larger number of tanks it will be PT-91s and whatever T-72s they may still have. And that will not happen this year. Within a year they should take deliveries of 116 Abrams (M1A1 FEP) and give or take 20 K2 (10 K2s already delivered). That is not even enough to make up the numbers of what was sent to Ukraine already, although the value per tank is much higher than T-72s that were sent. A total of 180K2, 116 M1A1 FEP and 250 M1A2 SepV3 have been ordered but these deliveries will not end until 2026. Those deliveries would allow to transfer all remaining PT-91s and whatever T-72s are left. Not Leo 2s though. I don’t see Poland giving up Leo2s until production of K2PL starts in Poland in 2026 if they’re lucky.

      Meanwhile Germany is sitting in hundreds of Leo1s and French are sending armored cars that they call wheeled tanks for propaganda purposes.

You no longer have to cut a deal with your government, your Local Industry Involvement, the Greens, the Media, the OEM, their Government and the kid down the road (aka – how contracts usually work). You are dealing government to government. The selling government says ‘Yeah, we own some of these. Fully paid for’, and you say ‘Can I have them?     This, at a casual guess, is why the purchase seemed to have been done overnight.
