“Fun” Times in AirBnb World

My experiences with AirBnb over the past several years has been remarkably good. In fact, except for one slightly less than clean place in Albuquerque, every other place has been perfect. My luck changed recently though when one pair of hosts in San Diego, demanded that “all unvaccinated guests must wear masks the entire time they step foot on the property, except when in the cottage in the back”. So effectively they are demanding to know each person’s vaccination status because if everyone complies with their insane rules then each person is revealing their vaccination status. This clearly violates both AirBnb’s non-discrimination and privacy policy. I’ve lodged a complain and we shall see if AirBnb’s policies are legitimate or just corporate double-speak.

Sharing my story with a friend, he shared this article with me:

If you’ve stayed at an Airbnb then you’re familiar with the basic list of things to do when staying in someone else’s space: lock the door, turn off the lights, and take out the trash.

Many would consider these tasks common courtesy; however, some hosts appear to be taking it to another level.

From doing the laundry to mowing the lawn, people online are mocking Airbnb listings with long lists of chores for their guests — on top of a cleaning fee.

“No, because I thought y’all were lying when you said Airbnb hosts sent you chores,” wrote one TikTok user who posted a video of a long list of things to do, including “organize the closet as you found it” and “throw away any and all the food items in the refrigerator and freezer.”

Some people clearly should not be in the consumer hospitality business. A smaller set should refrain from interacting with other human beings … ever.

  1. We ran one for almost 2 years. It was a good experience. Of course some guests will never be happy, some guests will break little things and not tell you, some will drink too much and puke on the deck, but most were great.

We asked people to leave things as they found them, do your dishes, etc… and no one complained about that. We also asked people to shower before using the hot tub, very few listened as evidenced by the disgusting soup we often found in it.

Biggest lesson was that a cottage far from cities while beautiful and peaceful means finding good local help is almost impossible, especially cleaners.

  2. My experience with airbnb has also been mostly positive other than one place on the south end of the Big Island and for that one, the price should have been the red flag. The room was barely big enough for the queen sized bed. That mistake only cost us $50 usd though.

  3. “B&B” means literally bed AND breakfast. That concept seems to have been tossed like last weeks fish.
Our local B&B’s, not the Air B&B’s, take a lot of pride in their cuisine offered; the hosts make every effort to ensure their guests are well looked after.
On the other hand, the Air B&B’s up here are ina lot aof cases simply short stay party houses, angering the neighbors who have to put up with the noise and aggravation. So much so that the Air B&B situations are being legislated out of business.

    1. Our quiet lake is no longer so quiet thanks to Air B and B partiers and a Toronto based owner with no respect for anyone. I’m glad others have had such a pleasant experience with the company but it’s despised in my neck of the woods.

    2. There is exactly one reason for those outrageous regulations and it’s to defend the hotel-local government cronyist arrangement to minimize competition and maximize tax revenue.

  4. To paraphrase a little bit: Renting on AirBnB Is Like Inviting 30 Random People With Bladder Problems And Projectile Vomiting Into Your Home

  5. “This clearly violates both AirBnb’s non-discrimination and privacy policy.”

    How, exactly?

In any event, the answer to the unvaccinated is to ghetto-ize them, not let them in your domicile.

    1. Lol. You’re either an idiot fascist or a comedic troll. Either way, you’re a child. Lol again.

    2. Your usual charm is the reason why none would piss on your face of your teeth were on fire and why your girlfriend is inflatable.

  6. Give them a terrible review. Same for anyone asked to do chores. A$nal retentives should stay out of the hospitality business.

  7. Interesting about the demands to know the vax status of the potential guests. Last year I found AirBnB rentals hard to find (I moved but had to scramble around for a month and a half waiting for an apt to be reno’d), but the ones who were doing it, didn’t care about vax status, That made sense to me at the time – available, don’t care, unavailable, worried. Now I suppose a year later, some of those who shut down for probably 2 years and need the cash, are likely to non-vax phobic.

Still, I prefer hotels. I feel I’m intruding at AirBnB’s. But it seems to me, hotel prices went up a lot this summer when I needed to go to Vancouver, which is another reason tourism was down this summer in the lower mainland.

  8. Showers in that airbnb must be tough…’ I don’t know why guests keep dying in the bathroom!’.

See…proof that you’ll die if unvaccinated.

Stick them all in ghettos so covid will stop spreading, duh.

I know this is aggravating. I’d just leave. If they want to discriminate, eventually that will reflect in their bottom line. Lodging a complaint is too much trouble b/c one has to re-live the whole incident, writing about it takes too much out of your precious day. Sometimes I steam for awhile too, then, I let it go. Peace! Always choose Peace!

  10. Some folks need written instruction NOT to put a wood cutting board the dishwasher, so there’s that.

  11. Airbnb in a foreign language country is always interesting.
A Croatia host berated us for leaving basic cooking seasonings, like S&P.
Some don’t have pot scrubbers, or just tiny amounts of dish soap.
Appliance directions for gas cooktops, clothes washer, coffee machines in english? Pfft. Croat coffee is cowboy coffee, use a spoon to “filter”!
Door locks, window hardware, shutters, gas cooking bottles, flat toasters, AC control, door keys/lock systems, wifi access, even finding the location can be a challenge.
