When my husband went to Bosnia he had to buy his own boots, they gave him basically one bullet which he wasn’t allowed to use. If it weren’t for the US carting our military around we’d have zero peace keeping mission past or present. I’d break my husband legs before I’d let him serve under the current command, if they can cancel a veteran’s pension because of returned mail I can’t imagine how abusive active duty must be? Nothing new here. As a 37 year veteran of the RCN, I experienced many of these downturns. Back in the early 70’s P.E.T would often tell the Navy that is they wanted to see the world they shouldn’t have joined the Navy, In the late 70’s early 80’s our ships had to get special permission from above the steam above 12 knots. Economical steaming speed as they called it. Our procurement system is dead and has been for over 50 years. Consider that it took over 50 years to replace the Sea Kings. No new sidearms since the 2nd world war. I worked on the AOR replacement project back in 1988. To date – 34 years later – nada. Our new CPFs or Frigates are a joke. Whenever we were in a position of having no new money, we would reorganize. The Navy reorganized itself internally at least five times. yet our leaders remained smug on the international scene not really knowing that we were an international joke., And then of course there were the new, old submarines….. Our motto then was: “why buy the best when you can buy British.”

I remember talking to someone back in the 1970s who spent five years in the navy and never left the Halifax area. Finally he quit and almost immediately his ship announced a trip to Asia. The military plans everything to death. They plan a million dollar tank into a two million dollar tank. They plan a $30 million fighter into a $60 million fighter that performs like a $15 million fighter. They plan major changes deep into a project. Plan, plan, plan, plan, plan ……
I’m rather conflicted about our military – On the one hand I feel genuine sympathy for the grunts having to deal with shortages and other indignities that in my opinion could be solved with the stroke of a pen and especially so considering how much money has been handed out over the past two years.

Remember in public school how the teachers made mock of the military? It appears dumb for our Betters to do this cheap act, does it not? It was only later in life that I learnt about working back from Outcome to Motivation. What motivation would lead to this exact outcome?
Has Canada ever had a gung-ho, lavishly equipped, proto-Colonialist military? The purple haired historians never remind people of Canada’s claims to the Michigan territory, let alone the Oregon territory. The Russians wanted to give Alaska to Canada, but the evil Americans scooped that prize.
I don’t know where and when you went to school …. I started school in Ontario in 1949 .. just four years after the end of WW2. Teachers spoke of the military with reverence. Large numbers of boys joined cadet corps (in the event of another war).
We had a rifle range at our high school and were encouraged to use it.
If you were a poor student you actually got a failing grade and had to repeat or move on. There were lots of unskilled jobs back then. Only immigrants do them here now.
No one had a credit card, thus no debt which helps with sanity. No one had a smart phone or any of that internet shit and we were all sane, smarter and more interesting …. We are now automatons to our technology. Many are obese due to laziness and gluttony, unable to have a face to face debate … dumb as a stump due to our totally failed educational system and mentally disturbed alleged educators.
Right now we are being savaged by our politicians and the billionaire elitists who think money equals brains.

Only 25% of our armed forces are behind desks in Ottawa. Maybe if we raised this to 50% they could figure out the problem. It’s a big effing bureaucracy.
Just set a few rules. Half the military strength must be in fighting units – air force squadrons; artillery, infantry, armoured, or engineering regiments; or on ships. No more than 10% of the strength should be officers. Run it lean and mean. If the generals can’t work within those bounds fire them and promote someone who will.
It’s Canada – everyone gets a trophy and everyone gets a promotion. Can’t have all those paper-carrying lite colonels getting mud on their shoes.
Should take the Heinlein “Starship Troopers” approach. Everyone drops, everyone fights. Biggest issue with modern militaries is the 60% supporting the 40% (could be way off on these numbers) trigger pullers.
