Qari Asim, the head imam at the Makkah mosque in Leeds, was let go from his roles as independent adviser on Islamophobia and deputy chairman of the Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group on Saturday.
It comes after he endorsed a campaign for cinemas to pull screenings of The Lady of Heaven – a film about the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad.
The £12million movie was released in the UK over the Jubilee weekend, but was axed by Cineworld and, a day later, Showcase when staff faced crowds of protesters outside venues in Bradford, Bolton, Birmingham and Sheffield.
Mr Asim described The Lady of Heaven as a ‘disparaging movie’ that has ’caused much pain and hurt to Muslims’, The Telegraph reports.
But in a letter published on Saturday, the Department of Levelling Up wrote: ‘We have no option but to withdraw the appointment and end your roles with Government with immediate effect.
‘Your recent support for a campaign to limit free expression – a campaign which has itself encouraged communal tensions – means it is no longer appropriate for you to continue your work with Government in roles designed to promote community harmony.

The funny part is that the film-maker is a Shia Muslim cleric.

I remember when there were protests over “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Not so often these days.
If someone wanted to cause a lot more furor in the Islamic world what more ingenious method would there be than this idea. If they get so sanctimonious about the Prophet’s daughter maybe we can use it to our advantage. How about launching a DNA program with the title “Are you descended from the Prophet?” Can you imagine the consternation that would start in the Islamic world. Talk about the Shiite/Sunni wars of the past, a straight DNA test would really “Cry Havoc, and release the Dogs of War.” Just an idle (idol) thought on a quiet Sunday, but with a little thought someone could make a lot of money out of it, and the side benefit would be relative peace in the rest of civilized society.
Shi’ites already make a big deal of descendants of Muhammed. Anybody titled Sayyid or Sharif is a descendant. The kings of Jordan and Morocco are descendants. Heck, Queen Elizabeth II is a descendant, through a converted daughter of a Muslim king of Granada who married a king of Castile.
But Sunni Muslims ignore the whole thing.
Here’s the thing about descendants of Muhammad and the Shi’a/Sunni divide.
1. Everybody Sunni has signed onto the idea that Muhammad passed rule along to his “rightly guided caliphs,” who were not blood relatives of Muhammad. And that it was totally okay for these guys to do their level best to kill off their rivals, the blood relatives and descendants of Muhammad.
2. Every Shi’ite, and most of the other smaller groups of Muslims like the Twelvers making this movie, have signed onto the idea that Muhammad wanted his nephews Hasan and Hussein, the children of his daughter Fatima, to reign, and that all their relatives and descendants who were killed by Sunni rulers count as martyrs for Allah.
3. Most Shi’ites and Sunni also believe that Muhammad’s existence predated the world, that the universe was created so that Muhammad could live in it, and so on. Pretty much everything about Jesus and about angels, all rolled into one.
4. However, Shi’ites mostly believe that Muhammad was separately created by God from light or part of God’s throne or whatever, in a way somewhat like the Muslim idea of angels, but better. And unlike angels, Muhammad could pass along this thing about being made from light to all his descendants. So basically, being a descendant of Muhammad means that you’re supposed to be a little nonhuman or superhuman.
5. The other thing about Fatima is that she allegedly led battles and fought on camelback, while pregnant. Obviously this has effects on how Shi’ites traditionally saw the role of women (as opposed to the ideas of modern teachers like Khomeini), and it also connects to various pre-Jesus Jewish legends about how the messiah’s mother was supposed to fight in battle (usually on elephantback). Also, there’s the “Hand of Fatima” sign, which is supposed to protect against evil eye and such, and which is supposed to be used only by Shi’ites (but isn’t, which torques off Sunni imams).
So basically, if you make a movie about Fatimah, you’re making a movie about “stuff Sunni Muslims don’t agree with, and will kill Shi’a Muslims to shut them up about.” But that’s pretty much every day about everything.
That said, the Twelver guy who made this movie has some interviews on YouTube that are all about torquing Sunni Muslims off. And he’s nuts, but again, that’s pretty much everybody making inflammatory Muslim videos.
