  2. Have any SDA contributors posted this live link to the Ukraine war? It’s an interactive, zoomable map of hot zones that is updated continuously. Blue icons are Ukraine posted hot spots/activities and Red are Russian. E.g. if you click on one red icon that looks like a mushroom cloud it says “Russian troops blown up the dam of Oskil water reservoir”. Click on a blue bomb icon and you’ll probably see a burning Russian tank. It shows the Ruskies have occupied an area that looks to be almost as big as England.

    2. Paul, yep I have been following it for weeks now. This is arguably the best source of info on the war, which in in itself is an indication of how bad the info is.

It doesn’t miss much, not even the attack on Belgorod within Russia as the infamous Allan S pointed out. It shows Nato visiting Armenia and counting their Russian-made planes.

        1. Yep, they should get on with the transfer of planes. Ukrainians need them and donor countries would love transferring them for F-16s. Especially those that operate both types already like Poland.

    Russian tanks have been having a torrid time during the invasion of Ukraine. According to Oryx, an open-source intelligence blog, at least 153 of them have been destroyed so far, along with 312 armoured vehicles. (The figures for the Ukrainian side are 26 and 57 respectively.)

    If you combine the two, one might conclude that Information could be used as fuel. All you’ll need is an internet link and Google Chrome.

    1. When I was an undergrad in engineering (back in the Triassic Era), a joke concerning a magic number made the rounds. It was called Skinner’s Constant, the value of which one can add to, subtract from, multiply by, or divide your calculated result in order to get the correct answer.

      I’ve long had the impression that dark matter was the astrophysical equivalent. It conveniently fits the theory to match the observations, yet its existence has yet to be proven.

      I’m keeping an open mind about it. Perhaps dark matter does exist and it hasn’t been found yet, either because researchers haven’t looked for it the right way or in the right place or the means by which it could be detected hasn’t been developed yet.

      On the other hand, maybe the theory is all wrong, not that something like that’s ever happened before. One example of that is the ring system around Saturn. All it took was data from Pioneer 11 and, later, Voyagers 1 and 2 to render numerous publications and books, which used observations from ground-based telescopes, to be incorrect. Perhaps something similar could happen to dark matter and dark energy.

      1. There’s no debate on the existence of dark matter. We see it’s effects on matter around it in spiral galaxies including our own. But the problem is it doesn’t seem to absorb or emit any type of photons from the lowest to the highest frequencies (gamma rays) hence “dark”. It’s pretty hard to look at something when it doesn’t emit or absorb photons. This is literally how we learned about the universe.

        Very little of our observation is outside that realm. I can think of two examples in gravitational waves and neutrinos.

        1. You forgot the Higgs particle.
          Then there is they hypothetical quantum of the dark energy field, called an inflaton, another spin 0 uncharged particle.
          Dark matter is also proven to exist by gravitational lensing.
          The fact is, every single fundamental particle known was predicted to exist by theory before it was discovered, with the exception of the electron, the muon and the photon.

      2. BAD, Alan S and HiHo – I think the Dark Matter effect is simply numerous intelligent civilizations flying around the universe at 99% or more of the speed of light. What better day to reveal my new theory than April 1st.

    2. Dark matter is the anthropogenic global warming of astrophysics: Everyone knows it’s true, but the evidence for its existence is surprisingly poor. The first link is honest enough to link to a pretty fair article casting doubt on it (https://www.nbcnews.com/science/space/maybe-dark-matter-doesn-t-exist-after-all-new-research-n1252995). They’ve only been looking for a dark matter particle for 50 years, without success, so why not invent an entirely new physical principle? I’m surprised to see there’s enough gap in the electron-positron annihilation photon energies to allow for this extra bit, but I don’t the extra would be enough to be the dark matter.

      1. The rotational anomaly combined with dynamics of some galaxy collisions and gravitational lensing is proof positive that there is something causing gravitational effects that does not interact electromagnetically.
        Some evidence supports MOND, other evidence supports DM, and it’ll probably be both.

    The supporting cast includes Donald Pleasance, Brian Keith, and Martin Landau. It’s a rather long one, about 2-1/2 hours, by it’s a bit of fun. The director is John Sturges, who also did Gunfight at the O. K. Corral and The Magnificent Seven.

    1. Not that much more. They have a limited supply of short range ballistic missiles and probably no option to replenish that. It is a strategic reserve that they are spending sparsely and wisely.

    Great film about Montreal by the National Film Board. There’s an interesting history in that City, most of the surnames that Historian Graeme Decarie mentioned are now known as places and street names, including his own. There’s an expressway in the City known as the Decarie Expressway.

    The above link and other media reports say that operations at the two weekly rags will not be affected, but we can hope that the contrary would be true. The (paywalled) Globe story on this says that Media Central cannot pay back a $1-million bond and has $325 in available cash. That’s bankruptcy! The company’s CFO and associated accounting firm have been fired.

          1. As far back as nearly 20 years ago, WJ was still a decent airline to fly. I remember telling some of the employees I encountered that I was a shareholder and one could see that they were pleased to know that. They knew who they were working for.

            By the early part of the last decade, that had changed and that’s when I saw the crappy attitude from the workers. Mention that one was a shareholder and the response was along the lines of “If you don’t like what we’re doing, sell your stock.”

    The feeling is Kenney may survive but at a level too low to instill confidence. A bloodbath awaits.
