In its ongoing attempt to investigate and gather information about private U.S. citizens, the Congressional 1/6 Committee is claiming virtually absolute powers that not even the FBI or other law enforcement agencies enjoy. Indeed, lawyers for the committee have been explicitly arguing that nothing proscribes or limits their authority to obtain data regarding whichever citizens they target and, even more radically, that the checks imposed on the FBI (such as the requirement to obtain judicial authorization for secret subpoenas) do not apply to the committee.
As we have previously reported and as civil liberties groups have warned, there are serious constitutional doubts about the existence of the committee itself. Under the Constitution and McCarthy-era Supreme Court cases interpreting it, the power to investigate crimes lies with the executive branch, supervised by the judiciary, and not with Congress. Congress does have the power to conduct investigations, but that power is limited to two narrow categories: 1) when doing so is designed to assist in its law-making duties (e.g., directing executives of oil companies to testify when considering new environmental laws) and 2) in order to exert oversight over the executive branch.

The ones who rigged the election are the ones abusing their power and persecuting those who were protesting a rigged election.
That is almost like giving bank robbers the power to investigate and persecute those who tried to stop them from robbing a bank.

Pardon my pessimism, but Democrats ( and Canada’s liberals ) are only going to become more authoritarian and tyranical…I think the next few years or decades will be worse than anything we have seen.

Congressional 1/6 Committee is an awkward title. They should rename it. Perhaps “The Committee of Public Safety”?
Of course the Democrats hate the constitution. The constitution constitutes the country as a republic. The Democrats want a democracy, i.e. mob rule, then the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.
Is anyone who is normal surprised that the Democrats are attacking freedom & democracy on several fronts?

I can’t help but think they want a real insurrection so they can go all out totalitarian.
A clique of those in the picture and including certain other few including Pelosi are subverting power of the people over the congress.
They are in the process of a coup to restructure power that is not given to them by anybody to control the American people.
It is true that there are those, perhaps 30% population that would definitely agree with the diktat. There are another 30% that could not care less unless it bites them in the ass, and then there are the rest that stand in opposition.
You see, those that wrote the US constitution, the bill of rights and all the other papers that actually have made America great, were written by fierce people that were interested in the affairs of men and, this is important, They knew their own nature that may corrupt unless they proclaim and institute defense against their own nature and against the future would be dictators.
Today’s rulers can’t have that, they ignore the constitution and find bottom feeders to supply the corrupt rhetoric, a proper syntax that may seem plausible and overwhelm the sensibilities of the population.
Those that are subject to the hot air of socialist/fascist ideas of a number of those in congress will not object and perhaps support them, not because they agree, because it’s just thing to do.
As it appears today, there is a very, very delicate balance in the senate that saved the day for now.
We will see in near future who will prevail.
The people should pay attention, if not, perhaps they deserve that they will get.
It’s rather simple.
When Republicans take back congress they should hold the self same kind of hearings against every single Demorat. Go after their family, friends, bank accounts, then leak every thing to a conservative friendly venue. We need to stop playing by the left’s one sided rules, and crush them like the maggots they are.
