Yesterday Statistics Canada reported that total manufacturing shipments declined by 3.0% (month over month) in September, and the industrial price index rose by 1.0% (month over month). The latter statistic means that industrial prices rose by 12% yearly for September:

No issue with the general concern/observation, but the “1% in one month means 12% per year” statement is not correct. One should always use annual inflation rate, i.e. last 12 months (year over year), and not simply extrapolate one month.

They are completely befuddled when I suggest that there will be no social programs if we don’t have a strong economy to fund them.

This is what happens when you:
1. run out of cheap crap from China
2. have no way to make your own (even if you hadn’t converted the factories into condos, most of the white men not too proud or lazy to do or make anything useful have retired or died over the last 40 years)
3. print truckloads of bank-confetti to keep Karen quiet because she’s run out of hubby’s money.
Turns out bank-confetti doesn’t make a great salad and isn’t ideal for starting a fire to keep you warm.
Just wait until the effects of the highway closures in BC start to kick in.
Economies addicted to Just In Time manufacturing techniques can run out of time with situations like these.
