If they cancel all exhibits from their “evil” white past, what are they left with? How many acceptable exhibits show cultural appropriation?
I’m curious about their decision-making rules, including the definition of indigenous. How long does a culture have to live in a geographic area to be considered indigenous?

Haven’t been there for years, but it hasn’t really changed. The museum has always had a massive First Nations representation, it’s very good. The other section they want to eliminate, is the Baskerville section of old town.
It was the Gold Rush that established BC. This IS HISTORY.
Erasing that is a travesty. If they want to enlarge the FN section, go ahead. But don’t teach history that one magical day, 5Million invaders showed up, and Vancouver disappeared from a forest to a modern city in a day.

Now I have another reason not to go to that part of B. C. I had enough of “native art” going through Vancouver’s airport each time I flew to and from the house I inherited.
I remember when the BC Provinical Museum was good. Then it went downhill…right after they started charging admission.
I spend many an afternoon in that museum when I was young, and I’m very familiar with all of those Native exhibits, and NONE of them left me with ANY negative feelings about Natives or their culture or history. This is nothing more than pandering to a grievance industry.
BTW They need to put back the Iron Chink.
ET, It’s been many years since I last visited the museum. The native indian exhibits were excellent and I remember the Iron Chink. That name was cast into structural castings of the machine. I don’t recall any description of what the machine actually did but it was among the fish cannery exhibits and I guess it reduced the requirement for Chinese manual labour. I wonder what happened to it? Pity if it was scrapped. They could have just ground off the letters.
When it was Free, I would bike into town and visit almost every weekend.

Admission to the Royal British Columbia Museum is $26.95 for an adult. Add to that cost cumbersome COVID protocols, the removal of exhibits and the ideological re-jigging of history to make any “settler” visitors feel guilty and you’ve got yourself a deserted building, my friends.

I went there in 2008 (grud… has it been THAT long… I am OLD!!!!)
I remember being utterly fascinated by the pre-European era displays because they clearly showed with tangible examples the long history of the area and the people who lived there. I left understanding more and respecting more.
HOWEVER it seems I was doing it wrong and the correct way to understand pre-European history in the non Europe parts of the world is to remove it from view and hope it goes away. After all nothing helps to teach people that something was a myth as not displaying evidence.
Give it another generation of this sort of ‘correction’ and there will be no evidence anyone lived before European settlement. Dunno about you, but this sounds all a bit ‘White Supremacism’ to me.
It’s a museum of British Columbian history, not whoever was living there before BC was founded. All that stone-age crap should be either returned to whoever claims it or sent to the landfill. Museums are supposed to be showpieces of culture and learning, there is nothing to learn from these tribes. If they want a museum, they can pay for it, and have it on their land.
Like the recent revelations about school boards pushing a lefty-agenda, museums & the cultural industry are infected by much of the same nonsense. The only way for the public to turn back the tide is to demand that the heads of these institutions be elected, and the subjects they cover in major installations be approved directly by the public. Not by “consultation” but by voting during an election. Unfortunately, that means our museums will be about nothing but hockey and Terry Fox, but that’s probably better than what we have now.
