I liked the comment that universities are places where rich families send their idiot children just to get them out of the way.
While I was teaching at Armpit College, I often had students that fit into that category, though not necessarily having wealthy backgrounds. Many of them weren’t particularly interested in what they were studying. I got the sense that their parents gave them an ultimatum: go back to school or go out and get a job.

Going through that list, I can honestly say that I’m glad I never became a professor after I finished my Ph. D. The people I knew who got faculty positions, some of whom now have tenure, are welcome to those jobs because idiocies like those in that database come with the territory.
Me, I just have to worry about properly settling my father’s estate. Somehow, having to drive to and from my house in B. C. doesn’t seem so bad.

Have you seen the latest Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) ad airing on tv? (I’ve seen it twice, so this is from memory.) A young person (indigenous and androgynous) is sitting in a hospital waiting room. As the camera zooms in on zher/zhim/zhit, the voiceover basically blames the white, colonial, patriarchy for the abuse and alienation suffered by the person. But CAMH has programs that “respect and honour traditional knowledge and community expertise” to help with the healing. The ad ends with the person surrounded by other indigenous people, one of whom appears to be smudging.
I don’t have a problem with traditional practices as an adjunct therapy. What I do dislike is blaming the white man and then using his extorted tax dollars to pay for the sage burning and sweat lodges.
Why do so many male POCs covet white wimins????
