  1. It’s a .50-cal.

    Pretty much any .50-cal can do the same thing. The devastation’s in the round, not the rifle itself. To say anything else is to fall prey to the “scary black rifle with the black thing that goes up” fallacy.

      Put a round at 1500 yards right thru 2.5″ thick stainless steel…Tis all about Muzzle velocity + barrel length if memory serves me……fire a 22 at half the speed of light and…well, y’all get the idea.

      Now a Railgun…miniaturized would be, I’m thinking, the ultimate “rifle” ….No.?

      Give it 20 yrs…betting you’ll see it…along with fully encapsulated battle armour…able to work in a vacuum.

      1. I think you underestimate the 14.5mm. South Africans actually built a riffle that can rapid swap between 14.5 and 20mm in the field with no tools. They noted that 20mm has more HE potential but 14.5 has better ballistics and penetration.

      2. Railgun is just a propulsion technology. We can shoot things as fast as gunpowder out of railguns *now* – you just need to carry 10 times the weight of propellant in capacitors and electronics.

        The real limits are how much kinetic energy can you add before you break apart the shooter – reinforcing the shooter’s body through bone lamination and recoil mitigation will get you more potential ‘oomph’ out of your gun than making it a linear accelerator.

    Triffids and all that.
    He deserves to be in the visionary canon, along with Orwell, Huxley, Bradbury, Asimov, Stapleton, Wells, Vonnegut, John of Patmos, Zappa, and, feel invited to add the others as you see fit.

        For those who actually own and use guns regularly, the .338 Lapua is the closest commonly available alternative to a .50

  14. OMG, that Guardian article. I only get to read the headline before the ‘you’re using an adblocker’ blocker comes up but, seriously. Its a .50 cal anti-material rifle. Its no more powerful than any of the several other .50 cal anti-material rifles that have been available for decades. Rather, its hampered by being a bullpup and enhanced (slightly) by having a reciprocating barrel to handle recoil a little better.

    But its not blowing helicopters out of the sky nor blowing up armored vehicles ‘in one shot’.

    Buy a used M82 and save yourself 7 grand.
