Science, or, more specificially, research, isn’t just a cartel. In practice, it’s more like a cult with membership being by invitation only.
That’s one reason why I saw a lot of grad students butt-kissing their supervisors. Without the blessing of those supervisors, the chances of getting a faculty position become asymptotically close to zero. The main reason for getting that faculty position is to gain tenure and a seat at the golden “job for life” hog trough.
The cultish aspect of research became apparent to me during my Ph. D. work. One must only investigate that which brings in lots of funding. Never be too original in one’s research, as one’s fellow cult members won’t understand it. Also, independence in thought is discouraged. Forget the notion of curiosity and going wherever the data leads.
By extension, one can see what I noticed in how the scientific community handled the phony plague. Anyone with an independent opinion was either reprimanded or silenced. Original approaches to dealing with it were quickly rejected and only those which were well-financed were pursued.

It still is no more dangerous than a seasonal flu. That countries may be attempting to go to war about this is insane. A civil war, damn right. A global war, bullshit. How about as a result of a tornado?
Don’t know how authentic this is, since I don’t recall seeing it on any news broadcast over the last week, but it seems that central China was hit by some major wind/rain/hailstorms including a tornado in Wuhan last week. This video reports on the damage to several cities/provinces over the period of May 14 to May 17. Looks like lots of major flooding and damage resulted. The idea that this was one of those couple time a century somewhere in the world type wild animal to human transmissions that just happened to happen right in the same town as a lab that has a CRISPR machine and handles bat viruses is as far fetched as they come.
