What was hailed by York Regional Police as the largest anti-Mafia operation in the region’s history has collapsed before it even reached a trial.
In the summer of 2019, police called Project Sindicato a massive blow against organized crime in the GTA, after 48 search warrants were carried out at cafés, businesses and residences in Vaughan and across the region. […]
Now the court case — which targeted builders, bankers, real estate agents and others in the financial sector — lies in tatters.
“All of the charges against all of the accused who were still facing charges in Newmarket related to Project Sindicato had their charges stayed,” Figliomeni’s lawyer Michael Lacy said on Wednesday in an email.
The prosecution’s case fell apart after defence lawyers attacked police conduct in the investigation, saying they unlawfully accessed solicitor-client communications, Lacy said

Too bad the cops were listening in on privilege lawyers and clients conversations when they were at the police station being interviewed by the police there a year earlier.
This is how they were able to find the evidence.
Too bad they weren’t investigating Trump. Then solicitor client relationship doesn’t matter.
Not true at all.
alla ASS, context is not yer strong point I see!!!
Why did they raid his lawyer’s office and read all of his files?
Oh, I am sure you will come up with some excuse for this violation of basic American ideas of civil liberties, but it was all part of a long and successful campaign to deny Trump legal representation.
You should look up attorney client priviledge. Specifically, when it does not apply.
Not all conversations are priviledged. In thr US they have a crime-fraud exemption. Look it up.
There is a difference in disclosing a crime to your attorney, and using your attorney to commit a crime.
“unlawfully accessed solicitor-client communications”
There is a key word here. Not all communciations between solicitor and client are priviledged. Very fine line here and obviously it was crossed.
“Not all communciations between solicitor and client are priviledged.”
Right, when the client is Trump, none of it is. I don’t care what kind of far fetched justifications you come up with for sending jackboots into his lawyer’s office to seize his files, they obviously applied huge pressure on Cohen to get him to flip. He even ended up with one of Hillary’s lawyers, Lanny Davis, who told the press that his client was guilty before he took it back as maybe going too far. Then they pressured Cohen to plead guilty to something that has never actually been shown to be a crime before a judge.
Actually solicitor client communication is all privileged. All of it. Whatever no one even cares about rights anymore. All that matters is right think and wrong think.
No it isnt. Stop believing everything you see on TV.
And you need to open a book, and get out of your comfort zone.
There are very few exceptions to client/ attorney privilege. None deal with communications of events in the past, criminal or not.
An exception may be made in the event of public safety, but the threat must be severe (and imminent).
Knowledge of future crimes is an exception because a solicitor is also an officer of the court and duty bound to uphold the law.
Also it should rightly be named “client privilege” as the client, not the lawyer, determines what is privileged and what is not, and only the client can dispense with that privilege.
Also if you’re thinking it would be easy to claim public safety, and use that as a defense for violating a suspects rights, let me assure you, the courts will slap that charade down faster than liberals putting Canadians in concentration camps (yes they did… more than once)
It certainly does not apply when the client used the solicitors services to commit a crime. Nothing to do with public safety
I’ll just throw this out there and see if it sticks. Of course, I have nothing to substantiate this suggestion, and that’s all this is… a suggestion. I’m not accusing anybody of anything, but I will just let it percolate in my brain for a while that maybe, perhaps, quite possibly, there’s a small chance that, maybe, just maybe…
The crown was bought off???
Ok, I just let it sit there, and leave now.
Like…”Nice family you have there. Too bad if something should happen to them.”…sort of thing?
Thumbs Up.
fc, my first thought as well, what does it cost now a days to buy a crown, and/or judge, 50 years ago it was cheep, $500 each!
Or perhaps the pay off was the underlying motive for the investigation in the first place.
Nope. Not possible in venerable Little Canader, where all public servants are as noble as they come and would NEVER even think of accepting a bribe.
Good to see the Mafia is still in business, thought they had gone the way of the dinosaur and had their territory taken over by far more modern gangs. Now that the government has horned in on booze, the numbers racket, drugs, and is about to legalize even more drugs,it must be hard for a crook to make a living these days.
The Mafia ,unlike our federal government and all their cronies, at least has a code of ethics and some teeth in their rules against breaking said code, unlike our politicians who face a $100 fine max. Sometimes I wonder if we wouldn’t be better off if the Mafia ran this country, they’re patriots, capitalists, and have a strict code of ethics, and most are good Christians. They are also good businessmen with sound understanding of economics and know very well budgets don’t self-balance.
And it’s good to see the Crown and it’s agencies brought up short for their law breaking ways.
I still wish we had a “fifth amendment” type law here. As the government tightens it’s noose around our necks in the next few years, we may need it.
11c of the Charter supposedly does that. The Crown’s work around is to claim the proceeding is not criminal.
Huh!? Imagine that. There is a Judge in America who believes the 4th. Amendment still exists … and still protects Americans. All Americans. Yeah, even REAL criminals … but I’d rather let SOME criminals go free than give license to Law Enforcement to trample my rights and SPY on me
“First you need honest people”
Dad
the yorkies shit the bed…
probably the same thing will happen with the tow wars
“Now the court case — which targeted builders, bankers, real estate agents and others in the financial sector — lies in tatters.”
Bankers? Well, no wonder the case was thrown out. On what planet has the law ever applied to bankers?
Bankers pay lawyers to write laws for them. Only debt-slaves have to actually obey them.
I am jealous that this still matters in Canada. We live in a one party police state. Better to let these guys get off than live in the kind of country the USA has become.
Then our Supreme Court says that if you bring a case about an election before it’s decided, you have no standing, and if you bring your case later, it’s moot.
That’s the catch — Catch-22
York regional police have form.
The great Donna Laframboise was the only journalist to ask questions:
‘Morin trial raises questions of fairness in judicial system’
https://injusticebusters.org/index.htm/morin01.html
The charges were probabIy dropped because there were too many names connected to the IiberaI party of Canada. I guess the heat was getting to be too much for Quebec operations….so they moved to the GTA to give it time to cooI down in “Ia beIIe Province”
Wait, what happened to the Canadian Tire thread below?
Weird how all these organized crime trials in Canada always fall apart cause of police and Crown misconduct or tardiness….
Pure theatre of the Kleptocrats.
Just sending the message;”Do not steal, your government hates competition.”
The Just Us System is designed to crush the taxpaying citizen.
The Police and Courts protect their regular clients against all Justice.
Speaking of which, what happened to the great investigation into the RCMPs informant that butchered 23 people ?
The Parasites used that jerks actions to outlaw a whole bunch of guns, yet we still cannot know how any of these stupid rules and restrictions imposed on the law abiding, might have stopped the Copy Cat Killer, cause he sure loved him some RCMP stuff, right down to executing citizens just for the hell of it.
Imagine ,if he had lived…The lawyers would be trying to convince a jury that “He was possessed by the image”,if only he had not been able to dress up as a RCMP and roam around in an imitation cruiser, why he would never have turned into a mass murderer..
Watch how many heads will roll for botching the investigation? /sarc
So they can’t accomplish police work that is needed without f’ing it up. It seems like the only good policing they can do now is tyrannical mall cop type policing.
