Tribalism is part of human nature, and it’s a big part of why socialism or libertarianism never really works at real-world scales: they’re only “truly” successful at very small scales, not much above the city-state level, because that’s about as big a population as can manage that sort of thing without tearing itself apart…thanks to tribalism and self-interest. And it would only work as long as people agree it’s working. Generally speaking, once you get larger than that, you need increasing amounts of authoritarianism (and possibly population ignorance) to keep things from spinning out of control. People just can’t help devolving down to me > my family > my tribe before it even gets to cities and beyond. My view, at least.
