Canadas travel restrictions are many times better than the US. Its a huge reason why we have fared so much better.
Private labs had a very late start developing their own kits because it wasnt until March that they were allowed to use/sell their own kits. Why develop something if it cannot be used. They couldnt even use the proven German formula.
The CDC/FDA very quickly had an H1N1 kit rolled out so they expected the same thing to happen. It didnt.
At first all samples had to be sent to Atlanta. Then they found out late Feb that every single kit was defective and there was no backup plan. Only at this time were the restrictions on private labs lifted.
Thats why the USA had one of the latest rollouts in the developed world. At one point in late Feb BC had performed more tests than the entire USA.
This severely hindered the response pf states like New York because they had no numbers, nothing to go on.
The problems with test kits continues to this day. Theres plenty available but in some areas it takes 2 weeks to get results.

If I read the graph correctly, it is weekly covid deaths per million. It would be interesting to see deaths per million from all other causes during that time frame or from the prior year.
The interesting thing if you look at “excess deaths”, you will find that the charts of different countries all look very much the same regardless of whether they locked down or didn’t. The difference being that those that didn’t lock down didn’t wreck their economy.
